CHAPTER 2 – The Man Who Owned the Hospital

CHAPTER 2 – The Man Who Owned the Hospital
The silence lasted only three seconds.
But to Grant...
It felt much longer.
He stared at Emma, waiting for her to laugh.
To admit it was an empty threat.
To confess she was bluffing.
Instead...
She calmly slipped her phone back onto the hospital blanket and turned her attention to the incubators.
Her tiny twins lay beneath the soft blue glow of the NICU lights.
Noah's chest rose with painful effort beneath the tiny ventilator.
Little Elise's fingers curled weakly around nothing at all.
Emma gently rested one hand against the glass.
"I'm here," she whispered.
"I'll always be here."
Grant scoffed.
"This is pathetic."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Who calls their grandfather to solve a divorce?"
Emma didn't answer.
She no longer needed to.
The young NICU nurse standing near the doorway glanced nervously toward the hallway.
Something had changed.
The atmosphere outside the room suddenly shifted.
Doctors who had been walking calmly moments earlier stopped speaking.
Several department heads hurried toward the elevators.
A security officer lifted his radio.
Then another.
One physician quietly straightened his white coat.
"What is going on?" Vanessa asked.
No one answered her.
The private elevator at the end of the hallway opened.
Out stepped an elderly gentleman dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His posture remained straight despite his age.
He walked with a polished ebony cane—not because he needed it...
But because it had belonged to his late wife.
Behind him came six members of the hospital executive board.
Then four senior physicians.
Then the hospital's Chief of Security.
Nearly twenty people followed.
Every employee they passed greeted him with immediate respect.
"Good morning, Mr. Sterling."
"Sir."
"Chairman Sterling."
Grant frowned.
Chairman?
Vanessa whispered,
"Who is that?"
The young nurse looked at them in disbelief.
"You... don't know?"
Richard Sterling stopped outside the NICU doors.
His sharp blue eyes immediately found Emma through the glass.
The stern businessman disappeared.
Only a grandfather remained.
"My dear."
Emma smiled for the first time in days.
"I'm sorry."
He crossed the room surprisingly quickly for a man in his eighties.
Then, without caring who watched...
He gently embraced her.
"I came as fast as I could."
His hand rested lightly against her hair.
"I heard you almost died."
Emma closed her eyes.
"I'm still here."
"Yes."
His voice became unsteady.
"And thank God for that."
Only after making certain Emma was safe did Richard look toward the incubators.
His expression softened even further.
"So these are my great-grandchildren."
He stepped closer.
Noah shifted slightly beneath the tiny blanket.
Elise let out the smallest sigh.
Richard smiled.
"They're fighters."
Emma nodded.
"They get that from you."
He quietly wiped moisture from one eye.
Then he noticed the leather folder lying beside Emma.
The signed divorce papers.
His gaze slowly moved toward Grant.
Everything changed.
The warmth disappeared.
"What happened?"
Emma answered calmly.
"He came to serve divorce papers."
Richard nodded once.
"And?"
"He emptied our accounts."
Another nod.
"And?"
"He abandoned the twins."
Richard remained silent.
Emma looked toward Vanessa.
"And she came wearing my maternity coat."
Richard followed her gaze.
His eyes rested briefly on the embroidered initials visible inside the collar.
N.E.
Noah.
Elise.
The old man's jaw tightened.
Grant cleared his throat.
"I'm sorry..."
"...who exactly are you?"
Richard slowly turned.
"My name..."
"...is Richard Sterling."
Grant waited.
The name meant nothing.
Richard continued.
"I founded Sterling Healthcare."
One member of the executive board quietly added,
"Beacon Crest Medical Center is one of seventy-two hospitals within the Sterling Healthcare Network."
Silence.
Grant blinked.
Seventy-two?
Vanessa looked confused.
"No..."
"...that's impossible."
The hospital CEO stepped forward.
"It is entirely possible."
He extended his hand respectfully toward Richard.
"Chairman Sterling owns this hospital."
Then he looked directly at Emma.
"And Miss Emma Sterling owns nearly forty percent of the network."
Grant's face drained of color.
"What?"
Emma met her husband's eyes.
For three years...
He had believed she came from a modest family.
He had laughed when she refused lavish gifts.
He had mocked her old sedan.
He had teased her for wearing simple clothes.
He thought she had nothing.
She had simply never corrected him.
Grant laughed nervously.
"This isn't funny."
Emma didn't smile.
"It wasn't meant to be."
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
She forced an awkward laugh.
"Grant said Emma's family was practically gone."
Richard looked at her calmly.
"My family is very much alive."
His gaze fell to the ivory maternity coat.
"Young lady."
Vanessa instinctively straightened.
"Yes?"
"You're wearing something that doesn't belong to you."
She hesitated.
"It's just a coat."
Richard nodded once.
"I agree."
Then his eyes hardened.
"So taking it off shouldn't be difficult."
The room became perfectly still.
Vanessa looked at Grant for help.
Grant said nothing.
Slowly...
Embarrassed beyond words...
She slipped the coat from her shoulders.
Richard accepted it carefully.
Without another word...
He draped it over Emma's blanket.
Exactly where it belonged.
The Chief of Security stepped forward.
"Chairman Sterling."
Richard nodded.
"Please escort these two out."
Grant frowned.
"You can't remove me."
Richard looked at him.
"I can."
"I'm the children's father."
"You are."
"And today..."
"...you chose to visit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to emotionally abuse a recovering patient."
He glanced toward the security cameras mounted in the corner.
"I'm certain our recordings captured every word."
Grant froze.
The cameras.
He hadn't noticed them.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"You can't use hospital recordings—"
Richard interrupted quietly.
"Our legal department can determine that."
He looked toward the head nurse.
"Were there witnesses?"
The nurse answered immediately.
"Seven."
"And every word spoken can be verified."
Richard nodded.
"Thank you."
Two security officers approached Grant.
He pulled away.
"This is ridiculous."
Richard remained composed.
"No."
"What is ridiculous..."
"...is a man standing in front of his critically ill newborn children and calling them a burden."
Grant opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Before security escorted him away, he turned toward Emma one last time.
"You planned this."
Emma slowly shook her head.
"No."
"You planned this yourself."
"You just didn't know who I really was."
For the first time since entering the NICU...
Grant wasn't angry.
He was afraid.
Because suddenly...
Every conversation.
Every financial decision.
Every insult.
Every signature.
Took on a completely different meaning.
As the doors closed behind Grant and Vanessa...
The room became quiet again.
Richard pulled a chair beside Emma's bed.
He looked through the incubator glass.
"So..."
"What are their names?"
Emma smiled softly.
"Noah."
She pointed gently.
"And Elise."
Richard leaned forward.
"Hello, Noah."
"Hello, Elise."
"I'm your great-grandfather."
His voice broke.
"And I promise you something."
"No one..."
"...will ever make you feel unwanted again."
A tiny hand moved inside the incubator.
It was Noah's.
His fragile fingers stretched toward the glass.
Richard carefully placed one weathered hand against it.
For a moment...
Four generations of one family...
Were connected by nothing more than glass.
And love.
Outside the hospital...
Grant stood on the front steps, staring at the massive silver letters mounted above the entrance.
BEACON CREST MEDICAL CENTER
Below it...
In smaller letters he had somehow never noticed...
A STERLING HEALTHCARE HOSPITAL
His knees suddenly felt weak.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"What do we do now?"
Grant looked back at the towering building.
For the first time in years...
He realized he had made a mistake so enormous...
May you like
No amount of money might ever be enough to fix it.
