CHAPTER 4 – The Company He Thought He Stole

CHAPTER 4 – The Company He Thought He Stole

Grant Holloway had spent the entire night convincing himself the lawyers were bluffing.

By sunrise...

He almost believed it.

He stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of his executive office, overlooking the city skyline he had once admired with pride.

The polished mahogany desk.

The imported leather chairs.

The framed magazine cover declaring him "One of the Brightest Entrepreneurs Under Forty."

Everything in the office whispered success.

Everything except the silence.

No congratulatory emails.

No calls from investors.

No messages from board members.

Only one unopened envelope sat neatly in the center of his desk.

It bore the silver seal of Sterling Family Holdings.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

He was afraid to open it.

At the same moment...

Emma was watching something far more important.

A nurse gently adjusted Noah's tiny breathing tube.

His oxygen levels had remained stable throughout the night.

Beside him, Elise slept peacefully beneath a knitted pink blanket donated by a local charity.

Emma smiled softly.

"They look so small."

Dr. Amelia Carter nodded.

"Premature babies usually do."

She glanced toward the monitors.

"But they're stronger than they were yesterday."

Emma finally exhaled.

It was the first good news she'd received in weeks.

Richard Sterling quietly entered the NICU carrying a small paper bag.

"I brought breakfast."

Emma looked at the bag and laughed.

"You remembered."

"Cinnamon rolls."

"From Maple Street Bakery."

"My favorite."

Richard smiled.

"You've refused every expensive breakfast this hospital can make."

"But you'll never say no to cinnamon rolls."

Emma accepted one carefully.

"You always said..."

"...the best things in life shouldn't cost a fortune."

Richard chuckled.

"I was trying to raise a granddaughter."

"Not a billionaire."

Across town...

Grant finally opened the envelope.

The first page contained only one sentence.

NOTICE OF EMERGENCY SHAREHOLDER REVIEW

His heartbeat quickened.

The second page listed ownership percentages.

Grant scanned the numbers once.

Then again.

His face slowly lost all color.

Sterling Family Holdings — 51%

Emma Sterling Trust — 19%

Employee Partnership Fund — 15%

Grant Holloway — 15%

He blinked.

No.

That wasn't possible.

He owned the company.

Didn't he?

His hands began shaking as he flipped to the final page.

Attached was the original incorporation agreement.

His signature.

Emma's signature.

Richard Sterling's signature.

He remembered signing dozens of legal papers three years earlier.

He had trusted Emma completely.

He never bothered reading every page.

Now...

Those same pages had come back to destroy him.

His office door opened.

Chief Financial Officer Harold Benson entered quietly.

"You've seen the documents."

Grant looked up.

"Tell me they're wrong."

Harold didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He placed another folder on the desk.

"This came from the external auditors."

Grant opened it.

Inside were transaction reports.

Bank statements.

Internal approvals.

Wire transfers.

Every hidden movement of company money over the past eighteen months.

Every unauthorized transfer...

Led back to Grant.

His mouth went dry.

"You investigated me?"

Harold sighed.

"No."

"Emma did."

Grant slammed the folder shut.

"When?"

Harold met his eyes.

"Months ago."

The room became very quiet.

"Emma suspected something?"

Harold nodded.

"She noticed small discrepancies."

"Company expenses."

"Vendor payments."

"Executive bonuses."

Grant laughed bitterly.

"She never said anything."

Harold looked toward the window.

"She wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation."

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Emma hadn't been naive.

She had been hopeful.

Inside the boardroom...

The directors were already waiting.

Normally, Grant entered first.

Today...

No one acknowledged him.

He sat at the head of the table.

The chair suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Harold stood.

"I call this emergency meeting to order."

Grant frowned.

"You don't call meetings."

"I do today."

"Why?"

Harold slid another document toward every board member.

"Because the majority shareholder has requested a vote."

Grant's heartbeat accelerated.

"Majority shareholder?"

Harold looked directly at him.

"Sterling Family Holdings."

At Beacon Crest Medical Center...

Emma had no idea the board meeting had begun.

She was busy learning something much more complicated.

How to hold a baby weighing barely two pounds.

The NICU nurse carefully placed Noah against her chest.

Skin-to-skin contact.

"Kangaroo care," the nurse explained.

"It helps regulate his heartbeat."

Emma looked down.

Noah was impossibly tiny.

His entire hand barely covered one of her fingers.

She whispered,

"Hi, sweetheart."

His tiny body relaxed.

The monitor immediately reflected the change.

Heart rate...

Steadier.

Breathing...

Calmer.

The nurse smiled.

"He knows his mother's voice."

Emma closed her eyes.

For the first time since the emergency delivery...

She truly felt like a mother.

Back inside the boardroom...

Harold cleared his throat.

"The first agenda item..."

"Removal of Grant Holloway as Chief Executive Officer."

Grant shot to his feet.

"You can't do that."

Harold remained calm.

"We can."

"You need a majority vote."

Harold nodded.

"We have one."

Grant looked around desperately.

Several directors avoided eye contact.

Others looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

Director Susan Lee finally spoke.

"Grant..."

"We trusted you."

"I didn't steal anything."

Harold quietly opened the audit report.

"You transferred company funds into personal investment accounts."

"They were temporary."

"You forged executive approvals."

"I intended to replace the money."

"You billed vacations as corporate research."

Grant slammed both hands onto the table.

"I built this company!"

Silence.

Then...

A quiet voice answered.

"No."

Everyone turned.

Richard Sterling had entered unnoticed.

He walked slowly toward the head of the table.

"You built your career."

He looked directly at Grant.

"My granddaughter built the company."

Grant laughed in disbelief.

"Emma handled paperwork."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"Emma developed the first product design."

"Emma secured the original patents."

"Emma negotiated the first hospital contracts."

"Emma recruited your first engineering team."

Every sentence landed like another hammer.

Richard continued.

"You handled presentations."

"She built the foundation."

Grant stared.

"No..."

Richard reached into his briefcase.

He removed a worn leather notebook.

Emma's.

The pages were filled with handwritten formulas.

Product sketches.

Manufacturing plans.

Every idea that eventually became the company's best-selling medical devices.

Richard placed the notebook on the table.

"Recognize it?"

Grant couldn't answer.

Because he did.

Emma used to stay awake until two in the morning filling those pages.

He remembered telling her...

"You're the genius."

"I'm just better at selling it."

Somewhere along the way...

He had started believing his own success story.

Harold stood once more.

"We will now vote."

One by one...

Hands rose.

Susan Lee.

Michael Torres.

Angela Wu.

Harold Benson.

Every director except Grant.

Harold looked toward Richard.

"The motion passes."

He turned back toward Grant.

"Effective immediately..."

"...you are relieved of all executive authority."

The words echoed through the room.

Grant slowly looked around the table.

No one smiled.

No one celebrated.

Because watching someone destroy himself...

Was never something decent people enjoyed.

Grant quietly packed the few personal items from his office.

A framed wedding photograph.

A crystal award.

An expensive fountain pen.

As he reached for the photograph...

He stopped.

It showed him and Emma on their wedding day.

She wasn't looking at the camera.

She was looking at him.

With complete trust.

He slowly turned the frame over.

Face down.

He couldn't bear to look anymore.

Meanwhile...

Emma sat beside Elise's incubator reading another story.

Richard entered the room.

"How did the meeting go?"

He smiled softly.

"They chose integrity."

Emma looked up.

"Grant?"

"He no longer works there."

She remained silent for a long moment.

Finally...

She whispered,

"I never wanted revenge."

Richard nodded.

"I know."

"I only wanted him to love our children."

Tears filled her eyes again.

"He looked at them..."

"...and saw a burden."

Richard gently rested one hand on her shoulder.

"Then he was the poorest man in that room."

Outside the NICU...

The same woman in oversized sunglasses watched from the hallway.

This time...

She wasn't taking photographs.

She was quietly speaking on the phone.

"I've confirmed it."

A pause.

Then she added,

"Grant has lost everything."

The voice on the other end remained calm.

"Good."

"Now tell Vanessa..."

May you like

"...it's her turn."
