CHAPTER 6 – Vanessa's Secret

CHAPTER 6 – Vanessa's Secret

Some lies collapse all at once.

Others...

Crack quietly beneath the surface until the day they can no longer carry the weight of the truth.

Vanessa's secret had survived for nearly six months.

It was about to begin unraveling.

The morning sunlight poured through the windows of Grant's rented apartment.

Nothing about the place resembled the luxurious penthouse he had once called home.

The furniture was secondhand.

The kitchen was cramped.

The silence was unbearable.

Grant sat at the dining table staring at a cup of coffee that had long since gone cold.

His phone buzzed every few minutes.

Lawyers.

Debt collectors.

Former investors.

He ignored them all.

Across the room, Vanessa stood before the mirror, adjusting the expensive maternity dress she had insisted on buying despite their shrinking finances.

"You should answer your phone," she said.

Grant didn't look up.

"None of them have good news."

Vanessa sighed.

"Neither do unpaid bills."

Grant rubbed his temples.

"Things will improve."

"When?"

"I don't know."

She folded her arms.

"You always have an answer."

He remained silent.

For the first time since she had met him...

Grant looked defeated.

And somehow...

That frightened her.

Meanwhile...

At Beacon Crest Medical Center...

Emma woke to gentle knocking on the family suite door.

Dr. Amelia Carter entered with an unusually bright smile.

"I have good news."

Emma immediately sat upright.

"The twins?"

The doctor nodded.

"Come with me."

Emma hurried toward the NICU as fast as her healing body allowed.

Richard was already waiting.

"So?"

Dr. Carter smiled.

"Elise no longer needs supplemental oxygen."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"And Noah?"

"His latest lung scan looks excellent."

The doctor looked at both incubators.

"They're finally behaving like babies instead of tiny warriors."

Richard laughed quietly.

"I'll take that as excellent news."

Emma gently reached inside Elise's incubator.

Her daughter instinctively wrapped tiny fingers around her mother's index finger.

"So strong," Emma whispered.

The nurse beside her smiled.

"They know they're loved."

Across town...

Vanessa sat alone inside an upscale obstetrics clinic.

She glanced nervously around the waiting room.

No reporters.

No familiar faces.

Good.

She approached the reception desk.

"I have an appointment with Dr. Lewis."

The receptionist smiled politely.

"Please have a seat."

Vanessa checked her watch.

Grant believed she was meeting an interior designer.

Instead...

She was about to hear something she had been avoiding for weeks.

Twenty minutes later...

Dr. Lewis reviewed several ultrasound images.

His expression remained professional.

"When was your last appointment?"

Vanessa hesitated.

He nodded slowly.

"I noticed something during today's examination."

Her stomach tightened.

"What?"

"The estimated conception date."

She forced a smile.

"Is everything okay?"

The doctor looked directly at her.

"The baby's growth suggests a different timeline than the one recorded in your file."

Vanessa's smile faded.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

"...your pregnancy appears to be approximately five weeks further along than expected."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Vanessa slowly lowered her eyes.

She already knew.

She had simply hoped no one else would.

Months earlier...

Before she met Grant...

There had been someone else.

A brief relationship.

Careless.

Forgettable.

Or so she had believed.

Then she discovered she was pregnant.

Only days later...

Grant entered her life.

Successful.

Wealthy.

Emotionally vulnerable.

The opportunity had seemed obvious.

She never corrected his assumptions.

And he never questioned them.

Until now.

"Miss Hayes?"

Dr. Lewis's voice pulled her back.

"I recommend a prenatal DNA test."

She swallowed hard.

"Is it necessary?"

He answered carefully.

"It would provide certainty."

Certainty.

The one thing she feared most.

That afternoon...

Grant received another unexpected visitor.

Daniel Reeves.

The private investigator Richard Sterling had quietly hired weeks earlier.

Grant opened the apartment door cautiously.

"What do you want?"

Daniel held up an envelope.

"I think you'll want to read this."

Grant frowned.

"I'm not signing anything."

"I'm not asking you to."

Daniel handed him the file.

Then walked away without another word.

Inside...

Grant opened the envelope.

Employment records.

Travel receipts.

Restaurant bills.

Photographs.

Every page documented Vanessa's movements during the months before they met.

He frowned.

Then stopped.

One receipt caught his attention.

A beachfront resort.

Six months earlier.

Two guests.

Vanessa Hayes.

And...

Michael Donovan.

Grant's heartbeat quickened.

Who was Michael?

Elsewhere...

Emma spent the afternoon attending physical therapy.

Her body was recovering slowly from the emergency C-section.

Every step still hurt.

But each day became slightly easier.

Her therapist smiled.

"You've made incredible progress."

Emma laughed.

"I have two reasons to keep moving."

She looked through the therapy room window toward the children's wing.

"Noah."

"Elise."

Richard waited outside when her session ended.

"I have something for you."

He handed her a small envelope.

Emma opened it.

Inside were the original patent certificates for the medical devices she had designed years earlier.

She looked surprised.

"I thought these were lost."

Richard smiled.

"I was keeping them safe."

She gently traced her name embossed across the documents.

For the first time in years...

She remembered who she had been before becoming someone's wife.

Not just a mother.

Not just a survivor.

An inventor.

A scientist.

A dreamer.

That evening...

Grant confronted Vanessa the moment she walked through the apartment door.

"Who's Michael Donovan?"

She froze.

"What?"

He held up the investigator's report.

"I asked..."

"...who is Michael Donovan?"

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"An old friend."

Grant remained motionless.

"You vacationed together."

"So?"

"The dates overlap."

Her smile disappeared.

"What dates?"

Grant slowly walked closer.

"The dates when you claim our baby was conceived."

Silence.

Vanessa looked away.

Grant noticed.

For the first time.

She wouldn't meet his eyes.

"Answer me."

She crossed her arms.

"It doesn't matter."

Grant stared.

"It matters to me."

She sighed dramatically.

"You've become paranoid."

He stepped closer.

"Take a DNA test."

The room fell silent.

Vanessa's breathing changed.

Almost imperceptibly.

But Grant noticed.

Because innocent people usually become angry.

Guilty people...

Become afraid.

At Beacon Crest...

The NICU lights dimmed for the evening.

Emma sat quietly humming a lullaby.

Noah slept peacefully.

Elise stretched one tiny arm toward the sound of her mother's voice.

Richard watched from the doorway.

He smiled.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel Reeves.

She knows the baby may not be Grant's.

Richard's expression became thoughtful.

A second message appeared.

There's something even bigger.

Richard immediately called.

"What did you find?"

Daniel's voice was calm.

"I've located Michael Donovan."

"And?"

"He isn't just Vanessa's ex-boyfriend."

A pause.

Then...

"He used to work for Grant's biggest competitor."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

The pieces began fitting together.

This had never been only an affair.

It might have been...

May you like

A carefully planned trap.
