CHAPTER 9 – The Twins Come Home

CHAPTER 9 – The Twins Come Home
Some victories arrive with fireworks.
Others...
Arrive with two tiny car seats.
After ninety-three long days inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit...
Noah and Elise were finally going home.
The morning began before sunrise.
Emma had barely slept.
Not because she was worried.
Because she was afraid to believe it was real.
For three months, every day had started with hospital monitors, antiseptic hallways, and whispered conversations with nurses.
Today...
Everything would change.
She stood quietly beside the twins' cribs, watching them sleep.
Noah had grown into a curious little boy with bright gray-blue eyes that followed every movement around him.
Elise was smaller than her brother but no less determined. Whenever Noah cried, she would somehow reach toward the sound, as if reminding him they had fought this battle together from the very beginning.
Emma smiled through tears.
"We made it."
A gentle knock came at the NICU door.
Dr. Amelia Carter entered carrying two thick folders.
She grinned.
"I've been waiting months to say this."
Emma's heart raced.
"The discharge papers?"
Dr. Carter nodded.
"You officially have two healthy babies."
Emma covered her mouth.
Healthy.
It was a word she had dreamed about every night since the emergency delivery.
Richard Sterling stepped inside moments later.
He looked from the doctor to Emma.
"Is it time?"
Emma couldn't speak.
She simply nodded.
Richard quietly removed his glasses and wiped away a tear before anyone could notice.
The nurses gathered one by one.
Many had cared for Noah and Elise since the day they were born.
Nurse Olivia adjusted Noah's tiny knitted hat.
"I think someone is ready to explore the world."
Noah answered with a loud yawn.
Everyone laughed.
Another nurse carefully wrapped Elise in a soft pink blanket.
"She always liked this one."
Emma looked at every familiar face.
"You saved my children."
Olivia gently shook her head.
"We helped."
She smiled warmly.
"They saved themselves."
One by one, the nurses hugged Emma.
Some cried openly.
Others smiled through misty eyes.
Dr. Carter handed Emma a small scrapbook.
"We made something."
Emma opened it carefully.
Inside were photographs documenting every milestone.
The first time Noah opened his eyes.
Elise reaching one pound.
The twins holding each other's tiny fingers.
Their first bath.
Their first matching hats.
Even the footprints taken on the day they were born.
Emma couldn't stop crying.
"I'll treasure this forever."
Dr. Carter smiled.
"We hoped you would."
Outside the hospital...
A black SUV waited near the private entrance.
But it wasn't the luxurious limousine Richard usually traveled in.
Instead...
It carried two professionally installed infant car seats.
Richard proudly inspected them.
"I watched six instructional videos."
Emma laughed.
"You installed them yourself?"
He looked offended.
"I supervised."
James, the Sterling family chauffeur, coughed politely.
"I believe I performed the installation, sir."
Richard smiled.
"A technical detail."
Emma carefully settled Noah into his seat.
Then Elise.
Both babies blinked at the bright morning sunlight.
It was the first time either of them had felt fresh air.
No hospital walls.
No incubators.
Only a cool spring breeze.
Emma whispered,
"Welcome to the world."
As the SUV slowly pulled away...
Every nurse standing outside waved goodbye.
Inside the vehicle, Noah slept peacefully.
Elise stared curiously through the window.
Richard couldn't stop looking at them.
"You know..."
"I bought every parenting book I could find."
Emma laughed.
"Really?"
"I've highlighted sections."
"You highlighted them?"
"I take grandfather duties seriously."
She reached over and squeezed his hand.
"I know you do."
The Sterling estate looked different than Emma remembered.
The once formal mansion had transformed.
The gardens now included colorful play areas.
A small swing hung beneath an old oak tree.
The grand library contained children's books alongside medical journals.
One wing had been completely renovated.
The nursery doors stood open.
Emma stepped inside.
Her breath caught.
The room was beautiful.
Soft cream-colored walls.
Hand-painted clouds across the ceiling.
Two handcrafted cribs stood beside a large window overlooking the gardens.
Above them hung a wooden sign.
Noah & Elise
Nothing extravagant.
Nothing excessive.
Only love.
Richard watched Emma quietly.
"I wasn't sure about the wallpaper."
She laughed through tears.
"It's perfect."
He smiled.
"I wanted it to feel like home."
Emma looked around the room.
"It already does."
Later that afternoon...
Emma carried Noah through the gardens.
Birds chirped from nearby trees.
Flowers swayed gently in the breeze.
Noah watched everything with wide eyes.
Meanwhile, Elise slept peacefully against Richard's chest.
The elderly billionaire walked slowly beneath the cherry blossoms.
"I forgot how small babies are."
James smiled.
"Until they discover how loud they can be."
Almost on cue...
Noah began crying.
Everyone laughed.
Inside the mansion kitchen...
The staff gathered around a large wooden table.
Chef Maria placed a warm apple pie in the center.
"Celebration."
Emma looked surprised.
"You didn't have to."
Maria smiled.
"We wanted to."
One by one...
Housekeepers.
Gardeners.
Drivers.
Maintenance workers.
Every person who had worked alongside Richard for years welcomed the twins.
No titles.
No formalities.
Only genuine affection.
Emma realized something.
Her grandfather had never built an empire.
He had built a family.
Across town...
Grant sat alone in his apartment.
The television quietly played in the background.
A local news segment caught his attention.
The reporter stood outside Sterling Estate.
"No official photographs have been released, but sources confirm that Emma Sterling's premature twins have finally been discharged from Beacon Crest Medical Center after ninety-three days in neonatal intensive care."
Grant slowly stood.
Home.
They were home.
His children...
Were home.
Without him.
He drove toward the estate almost without thinking.
Stopping several hundred feet from the gates.
Security immediately recognized him.
One guard approached politely.
"Mr. Holloway."
"I'd like to see my children."
The guard remained respectful.
"I'm sorry."
"Mrs. Sterling has requested no unapproved visitors."
Grant looked toward the mansion.
"I only want five minutes."
"I'm afraid I can't allow that."
Grant nodded slowly.
"I understand."
He didn't argue.
He simply sat inside his car, staring at the distant windows.
Somewhere beyond them...
Noah and Elise were sleeping.
He wondered if they would ever know his voice.
As dusk settled over the estate...
Emma rocked both babies in the nursery.
She softly sang the lullaby her mother had once sung to her.
Richard stood quietly in the doorway.
"They're finally home."
Emma smiled.
"They are."
After a long silence, she asked,
"Do you think they'll remember the hospital?"
Richard looked at the sleeping twins.
"No."
"They'll remember something much more important."
"What?"
He smiled warmly.
"They'll remember always being loved."
Emma looked down at Noah and Elise.
For the first time since becoming a mother...
There were no machines.
No alarms.
No fear.
Only the peaceful rhythm of two tiny hearts sleeping safely beneath the same roof.
Outside, the lights of Sterling Estate glowed warmly against the evening sky.
Inside...
A house that had once echoed with loneliness was now filled with the quiet sounds of new life.
And somewhere beyond the gates, unseen in the darkness, Grant sat alone in his car.
He realized too late that while he had spent months fighting to keep a company...
May you like
Someone else had gone home with everything that truly mattered.
