CHAPTER 7 – The Fall Begins

CHAPTER 7 – The Fall Begins

There is a moment in every collapsing empire when the people inside still believe the walls are standing.

Grant Holloway woke that morning convinced he still had time to fix everything.

He was wrong.

By the end of the day...

The first brick would fall.

At exactly 8:00 a.m., the elevators opened on the thirty-second floor of Holloway Medical Solutions.

Employees arriving for work slowed their steps.

Four men and two women in dark business suits walked into the lobby.

Each carried a leather briefcase.

Each wore an identification badge.

At the front desk, the receptionist smiled politely.

"Good morning. May I help you?"

The woman leading the group produced an official document.

"Abigail Foster."

"Lead Counsel for Sterling Family Holdings."

She slid another document across the counter.

"We're here to execute an emergency court order."

The receptionist's smile vanished.

Five minutes later...

Grant stormed out of his temporary office.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Abigail remained perfectly composed.

"Mr. Holloway."

"You've been served."

She handed him a thick folder.

Grant glanced at the title.

Complaint for Fraud, Breach of Fiduciary Duty, Corporate Theft, and Financial Misconduct.

His stomach tightened.

"This is ridiculous."

Abigail didn't react.

"The evidence has already been submitted to the court."

She nodded toward the accountants behind her.

"They'll begin their audit immediately."

Grant stepped forward.

"You don't have my permission."

"You no longer control the company."

Her calmness irritated him more than shouting ever could.

"The Board of Directors has authorized full cooperation."

Grant looked around.

Not one employee came to his defense.

Not one.

Across town...

Emma had just finished feeding Elise through a tiny syringe.

The little girl had reached another milestone.

She tolerated an entire feeding without complications.

Dr. Amelia Carter smiled.

"She surprises us every day."

Emma gently brushed a fingertip across her daughter's tiny forehead.

"She gets that from my grandfather."

Richard laughed from behind her.

"I thought she'd inherited that from you."

Emma smiled.

"Maybe both."

For a few peaceful moments...

The outside world didn't exist.

Only Noah.

Only Elise.

Only hope.

Richard's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

Audit has begun.

He quietly slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Emma noticed.

"Bad news?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"Justice."

Inside the company headquarters...

The forensic accountants spread hundreds of documents across the conference table.

Bank statements.

Vendor invoices.

Executive expense reports.

Internal emails.

One accountant frowned.

"There's another transfer."

Harold Benson leaned closer.

"How much?"

"$480,000."

Harold sighed.

"Personal account?"

The accountant nodded.

"And it's labeled as equipment procurement."

Another accountant looked up.

"We've found six more."

The room grew heavier.

Grant had not made one mistake.

He had made dozens.

Grant watched helplessly as years of hidden transactions were uncovered one after another.

He turned toward Harold.

"You knew?"

Harold answered honestly.

"I suspected."

"You should have told me."

"I gave you opportunities."

Grant frowned.

"What opportunities?"

Harold looked disappointed.

"I asked about missing funds."

"You blamed accounting."

"I questioned unusual bonuses."

"You blamed consultants."

"I wanted to believe you."

Grant lowered his eyes.

He remembered every conversation.

Every excuse.

Every lie.

Meanwhile...

Vanessa sat alone inside a luxury café.

Across from her sat Michael Donovan.

Tall.

Well dressed.

Calm.

He stirred his coffee slowly.

"You shouldn't have called."

Vanessa looked nervous.

"Grant knows about you."

Michael remained expressionless.

"I expected that."

"He wants a DNA test."

Michael finally looked up.

"And?"

"What if he finds out?"

Michael smiled faintly.

"He will."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"You don't seem worried."

"I'm not."

"Why?"

He leaned back.

"Because Grant isn't the only one losing everything."

Vanessa stared.

"What does that mean?"

Michael glanced around the café before speaking quietly.

"You thought I worked for Grant's competitor by coincidence?"

Her eyes widened.

"You didn't?"

Michael smiled.

"I was assigned to get close to his company."

The words hit her like ice.

"What?"

"You were never supposed to fall in love with him."

"I wasn't in love."

"Were you?"

She couldn't answer.

Michael sighed.

"You complicated the plan."

At Beacon Crest Medical Center...

Richard met privately with Daniel Reeves.

The investigator placed several photographs on the table.

Michael entering corporate offices.

Michael meeting executives from Meditech Global.

Michael and Vanessa together months before she met Grant.

Richard slowly examined each picture.

"So..."

"This wasn't random."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"We believe Grant's biggest competitor planted Michael years ago."

Richard looked thoughtful.

"And Vanessa?"

Daniel hesitated.

"At first..."

"She appears to have been manipulated."

Richard raised an eyebrow.

"At first?"

Daniel nodded.

"Eventually..."

"...she began making her own choices."

Back at company headquarters...

The audit reached Grant's executive office.

One accountant opened a locked filing cabinet.

Inside sat several external hard drives.

Harold frowned.

"What are those?"

Grant stepped forward.

"Private files."

Abigail looked toward the court officer.

"Open them."

Grant's face changed.

"No."

The officer inserted one drive into a secure forensic computer.

Within seconds...

Thousands of deleted files appeared.

Hidden spreadsheets.

Private ledgers.

Offshore account information.

The room fell completely silent.

Grant whispered,

"No..."

He had deleted those months ago.

How had they returned?

The forensic specialist answered the question before anyone asked.

"Deleting isn't the same as erasing."

At the hospital...

Emma finally held both twins together for the first time.

One rested against each arm.

The nurses gathered quietly around her.

Noah slept peacefully.

Elise yawned.

Emma laughed softly through tears.

"They've never been this close outside the incubator."

Dr. Carter smiled.

"This is exactly where they belong."

Richard stood several feet away.

He took out his phone.

Not to answer emails.

Not to review financial reports.

Simply...

To take a photograph.

One mother.

Two tiny miracles.

He knew this picture would matter far more than every business award hanging in his office.

Late that afternoon...

Grant received another call.

This time...

From the bank.

"Mr. Holloway."

"Yes?"

"We're informing you that your personal line of credit has been suspended."

"What?"

"Due to ongoing fraud investigations."

Grant stood frozen.

"I haven't been charged with anything."

"Not yet."

The call ended.

Minutes later...

His phone rang again.

Another bank.

Then another.

Then another.

Every institution had received the same notice.

By sunset...

Every major financial relationship he had built over ten years...

Was gone.

That evening...

Grant returned to the apartment.

The lights were off.

"Vanessa?"

No answer.

He walked into the bedroom.

Half the closet was empty.

Her suitcases were gone.

Only one envelope remained on the bed.

Inside was a handwritten note.

I never imagined it would end like this.

Don't look for me.

You need to find your own way now.

Grant slowly sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time...

He was completely alone.

At that exact moment...

Emma watched Noah open his eyes.

Just for a few seconds.

Tiny.

Sleepy.

Beautiful gray-blue eyes searching the world.

He looked directly toward her voice.

"Hello, sweetheart."

His fingers wrapped around hers.

Dr. Carter smiled.

"He knows exactly who his mother is."

Emma kissed the top of his tiny head.

Outside the room...

Richard's phone vibrated once more.

Daniel had sent only one sentence.

The federal investigators have accepted the case.

Richard looked through the NICU window at Emma and the twins.

Then quietly whispered,

May you like

"The real fall... begins tomorrow."
