CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 12

The Brother Who Begged

The courtroom did not empty after the message appeared.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Because every person in that room was trying to understand the impossible.

Anna Whitmore.

My wife.

The woman I buried.

The mother of my child.

The woman whose death had destroyed my entire world.

Was she alive?

My first reaction was anger.

Not hope.

Not relief.

Anger.

Because if Anna was alive...

If she had been alive all this time...

Then every sleepless night.

Every birthday without her.

Every moment Lily cried for her mother.

Every time I stood beside a grave and begged the universe for one more day...

It had all been built on a lie.

I looked at Michael.

He couldn't look back.

Because he knew.

He knew something.

Something he had hidden from me.

"Michael."

My voice shook.

He slowly looked up.

"Tell me the truth."

His eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel..."

"No."

I stepped forward.

"Not another excuse."

"Not another secret."

"Tell me what happened to my wife."

The courtroom became silent.

Michael looked broken.

For the first time since I knew him...

He didn't look like a man protecting himself.

He looked like a man who had finally realized there was no place left to hide.

"I thought she was dead."

The words came out quietly.

I stared at him.

"You thought?"

He nodded.

"I was told she was dead."

"By who?"

He closed his eyes.

"Evelyn."

The courtroom erupted.

The judge demanded order.

But I barely heard anything.

Because suddenly the story I had lived for two years was falling apart.

Michael's Confession

The judge allowed Michael to testify.

Not as a witness for Evelyn.

But as someone who had finally decided to tell the truth.

He sat down.

His hands were shaking.

"When Anna started investigating the financial records, I found out."

Rachel watched him carefully.

"What did you find out?"

Michael swallowed.

"That Evelyn had been moving money from the family companies."

"Why didn't you report it?"

His face changed.

"Because I was drowning."

The courtroom listened.

"My investments failed."

"My debts grew."

"And Evelyn offered to help."

I laughed bitterly.

"Help."

Michael looked at me.

"I know how it sounds."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You know exactly how it sounds."

He lowered his head.

"At first, I thought she wanted to expose corruption."

"But then I realized she wanted something else."

"What?"

"Control."

He explained.

Evelyn had created a plan.

A plan built around Lily's trust.

A plan where Daniel would be seen as unstable.

A plan where Michael would become the "responsible uncle."

A plan where Evelyn would secretly control everything.

"But Anna found out."

I whispered.

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"What happened?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"She confronted Evelyn."

The Night Anna Disappeared

Michael took a breath.

"The night Anna died..."

I froze.

"She didn't die."

The words felt unreal.

"She disappeared."

The courtroom went completely silent.

"Then why did everyone say she died?"

Michael looked at Evelyn.

"Because Evelyn made sure everyone believed it."

My hands trembled.

"What happened that night?"

Michael looked at the floor.

"Anna found proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That Evelyn wasn't working alone."

The judge leaned forward.

"Mr. Hart, answer clearly."

Michael nodded.

"Anna discovered someone else was funding Evelyn's actions."

"Who?"

Michael looked toward me.

"Someone from Anna's past."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Her mother."

Michael nodded.

The impossible became possible.

"Anna's mother wasn't dead."

He said.

"She had been hiding."

"She changed her identity."

"And she came back because of one thing."

"The Whitmore fortune."

The Woman Who Returned

The courtroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Pale.

But unmistakably familiar.

My breath stopped.

Because I had seen her.

In Anna's childhood photographs.

The woman beside a young Anna.

Her mother.

The courtroom froze.

The judge demanded:

"Who are you?"

The woman stepped forward.

"My name is Catherine Whitmore."

Anna's mother.

Evelyn immediately stood.

"No."

For the first time...

Evelyn sounded afraid.

Catherine looked at her.

"You really thought you could erase me?"

I couldn't move.

My entire body felt numb.

Catherine looked at me.

"Daniel."

Hearing my name from her mouth felt wrong.

"I am sorry."

I stared.

"You knew?"

She looked down.

"I knew Anna was in danger."

My anger returned.

"And you did nothing?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I tried."

"Then why was my wife buried?"

Silence.

"Because Anna asked me to disappear."

I froze.

"What?"

Catherine looked at the judge.

"Anna discovered the truth about Evelyn."

"She discovered Evelyn had been planning everything for years."

"But she also discovered something worse."

"What?"

Catherine looked at me.

"Anna knew someone inside your family would betray her."

My eyes moved toward Michael.

He closed his eyes.

Catherine continued.

"Anna staged her disappearance because she believed it was the only way to protect Lily."

My heart stopped.

"She staged it?"

Catherine nodded.

"She planned to return once the danger passed."

"Then why didn't she?"

Catherine's expression broke.

"Because someone found her."

Silence.

"Who?"

Catherine looked toward Evelyn.

"Her."

The courtroom exploded.

Evelyn screamed:

"She's lying!"

But nobody believed her anymore.

Then Michael stood.

He walked toward me.

For a moment, I thought he wanted to apologize.

Instead, he fell to his knees.

My brother.

The man who betrayed me.

The man who helped destroy my family.

Was begging.

"Daniel."

His voice cracked.

"Please."

I stared at him.

"Please what?"

"Believe that I never wanted Anna hurt."

I said nothing.

Because forgiveness was not something he could ask for.

It was something he had to earn.

Michael looked up.

"I have one more thing to tell you."

"What?"

His face turned pale.

"The person who ordered Anna's disappearance..."

A pause.

"Wasn't Evelyn."

The courtroom went silent.

"Then who?"

Michael looked at the evidence table.

At the documents.

At the recording.

And whispered:

"The person who ordered it..."

"Was the person who benefited most from Anna being gone."

Everyone turned.

Including me.

Because there was only one person who gained the most.

The person who gained access.

The person who gained control.

The person who had been pretending to help me all along.

Michael looked directly at Detective Sarah Collins.

And said:

"It was you."

May you like

The courtroom exploded.
