CHAPTER 13

CHAPTER 13
The Last Betrayal
For three seconds...
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody understood what had just happened.
Then the courtroom exploded.
"Detective Collins?"
A reporter shouted.
"Are you involved?"
"Is this true?"
"Did you help hide Anna Whitmore?"
The judge slammed the gavel repeatedly.
"Order!"
But the damage was done.
The name everyone trusted...
The person who had appeared to protect Lily...
The person Anna herself had trusted...
Was now standing at the center of the accusation.
Sarah Collins did not move.
She simply stared at Michael.
And for the first time since I met her...
I couldn't read her expression.
"Michael."
Sarah's voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Be very careful with what you accuse people of."
Michael swallowed.
"I know what I saw."
"What did you see?"
Sarah asked.
A question.
Not a denial.
That frightened me more.
The judge looked between them.
"Detective Collins, do you have any response?"
Sarah stepped forward.
"Yes."
Everyone waited.
She looked directly at me.
And my heart sank.
Because her eyes were full of regret.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Regret.
"I did not kill Anna."
The courtroom went silent.
A strange relief passed through me.
Then she continued:
"But I did lie to Daniel."
The relief disappeared.
The Secret Detective
Sarah walked to the witness stand.
She removed her badge.
Placed it on the table.
"I met Anna before her death."
I already knew that.
But then she said:
"What I never told Daniel was that Anna did not only ask me to protect Lily."
A pause.
"She asked me to investigate him."
The courtroom shifted.
My chest tightened.
"Investigate me?"
Sarah looked at me.
"Yes."
The words hurt.
More than I expected.
"Why?"
"Because Anna was afraid."
I stared.
"Of me?"
"No."
Sarah shook her head.
"Of what would happen if someone made you believe the wrong person was responsible."
Rachel stood.
"Your Honor, we need clarification."
The judge nodded.
"Proceed."
Sarah took a breath.
"Anna believed the people around her were being manipulated."
"She didn't know who she could trust."
"Not Michael."
"Not Evelyn."
"Not even herself."
I felt my anger rising.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Sarah looked down.
"Because Anna asked me not to."
That sentence again.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had protected me by keeping me in the dark.
And somehow...
The darkness was destroying me.
The Evidence Sarah Hid
Sarah opened a file.
"I found evidence three days after Anna disappeared."
Everyone froze.
"Disappeared?"
The judge asked.
Sarah nodded.
"At the time, I believed Anna was alive."
My heart stopped.
"Then why did you let us believe she was dead?"
Her voice became quiet.
"Because I was told she was."
"By who?"
Sarah looked at Michael.
"Michael."
Michael closed his eyes.
"I was wrong."
Sarah continued.
"He told me Anna was killed."
"He gave me information that made me believe the accident was real."
I looked at Michael.
"You lied to her too."
He nodded.
"I was scared."
Sarah continued.
"But later, I discovered inconsistencies."
"The accident report had been altered."
"The evidence had been moved."
"The witness statements were manipulated."
She looked at me.
"Anna was alive when I last saw her."
The words destroyed me.
Because they meant something terrible.
Someone had taken the woman I loved.
And everyone had been searching in the wrong direction.
The Real Betrayal
The courtroom waited.
Sarah opened another file.
"This contains the original investigation records."
"Records I should have submitted immediately."
"Why didn't you?"
The judge asked.
Sarah hesitated.
Then answered:
"Because I was threatened."
Everyone froze.
"By whom?"
Sarah looked toward the back of the courtroom.
At the person nobody had noticed.
A quiet man sitting alone.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew him.
"Daniel..."
Rachel whispered.
"Who is that?"
I couldn't answer.
Because the man was my father's former attorney.
The person who handled my father's estate.
The person who had helped create the family trust.
His name was Victor Grant.
Sarah pointed.
"He threatened my career."
"Because he knew what I found."
The judge ordered officers to bring him forward.
Victor smiled.
Not nervously.
Confidently.
Like someone who knew he still had control.
"Victor."
I said.
"How?"
He looked at me.
"I wondered how long it would take you to discover the truth."
My blood ran cold.
"You knew?"
"Of course."
He walked toward the stand.
"Your father trusted me."
A pause.
"Anna trusted me."
Another pause.
"And that was their mistake."
The courtroom went silent.
The Final Piece
Victor opened a briefcase.
Inside was an old recorder.
"Anna recorded many conversations."
My heart raced.
"Where is she?"
Victor smiled.
"Still asking the wrong question."
My anger exploded.
"Where is my wife?"
His smile faded.
"Your wife is not the only person who disappeared."
He placed the recorder down.
"This contains the last conversation Anna ever had."
The audio played.
Static.
Then Anna's voice.
"Victor, please."
My entire body froze.
His voice followed.
"You should have stopped digging."
Anna sounded terrified.
"You promised you would protect Lily."
Victor laughed softly.
"I promised your husband would never know the truth."
The courtroom went silent.
Then Anna said:
"If anything happens to me, Daniel will find out."
Victor answered:
"Daniel has spent his entire life believing the wrong people."
A pause.
"He will believe whatever we tell him."
The recording ended.
I couldn't move.
Because finally...
The last betrayal had a face.
Not Evelyn.
Not Michael.
Not even Victoria.
Victor Grant.
The man my father trusted.
The man my family depended on.
The man who had been standing beside us for decades.
Then Victor leaned toward me.
And whispered:
"Your father started this."
A pause.
"Your wife discovered it."
Another pause.
"And now..."
His eyes hardened.
"You are going to finish it."
The courtroom doors suddenly opened.
A police officer rushed inside.
Everyone turned.
"Detective Collins."
The officer looked terrified.
"We found something."
Sarah stood.
"What?"
The officer swallowed.
"A woman matching Anna Whitmore's description."
My heart stopped.
"Where?"
The officer looked at me.
"At an abandoned property outside the city."
A pause.
"She's alive."
The courtroom went silent.
Because after two years of grief...
After two years of believing I lost my wife...
The impossible had finally happened.
Anna was coming home.
But the officer's final words destroyed the hope.
"She asked us one question."
I stared.
"What question?"
The officer looked at me.
"She asked..."
"Is Daniel safe?"
My blood went cold.
Because Anna was not asking if she was safe.
She was asking if I was.
Which meant she knew.
May you like
The danger was not over.
