CHAPTER 8

CHAPTER 8
The Secret Inside Annaâs Trust
The name written beneath Anna's warning was covered.
Not erased.
Not destroyed.
Covered.
As if Anna had written it down, then changed her mind.
Or as if she was afraid someone would find it.
Detective Collins examined the paper carefully.
"She wrote this herself."
I nodded.
"I know her handwriting."
Rachel leaned closer.
"Why would Anna hide a name she wanted you to know?"
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was obvious.
Anna had been afraid.
Not of what would happen to her.
Of what would happen to us.
"Can you recover the name?"
I asked.
Detective Collins looked at the document.
"Maybe."
The word gave me no comfort.
Maybe.
After everything I had lost...
Maybe was the most terrifying word in the world.
The next morning, Robert Hayes returned.
Anna's attorney.
The man who seemed to know more about my wife's fears than I did.
He carried another box.
"I found something in my archive."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Something Anna instructed me to release only if there was a custody dispute involving Lily."
My chest tightened.
"Another warning?"
Robert nodded.
"Something more important."
He placed the box on the table.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Not addressed to me.
Not addressed to Lily.
It had one word written on it.
TRUST.
Robert looked at me.
"Before you open this, you need to understand something."
I waited.
"Anna did not create Lily's trust only to protect money."
"Then why?"
"To protect Lily from people who would use money to control her life."
I opened the envelope.
Inside were pages of legal documents.
The first page was the original trust agreement.
The second was an amendment.
The third...
Made me stop breathing.
Emergency Protection Clause.
I read the words slowly.
"If any person attempts to gain guardianship of Lily Hart through false accusations, manipulation, coercion, or financial motivation, that individual shall immediately lose all access to the trust and shall be legally prohibited from controlling the assets."
I looked up.
"Anna added this?"
Robert nodded.
"Six weeks before her death."
Six weeks.
The same time she began investigating Michael.
The same time she became afraid.
"Who knew about this?"
Robert hesitated.
"Only Anna, me, and the independent trustee."
"Who is the trustee?"
Robert looked at me.
"That is the part you need to see."
He turned the page.
The name appeared.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
Sarah Collins.
I looked up.
The detective standing beside me went silent.
"You?"
She nodded slowly.
"I was appointed as a confidential protection advisor."
"What does that mean?"
Robert answered.
"It means Anna trusted Detective Collins to intervene if Lily's safety was threatened."
I stared at Sarah.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her expression softened.
"Because Anna asked me not to."
The room became heavy.
Everyone had known pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
"Why?"
Sarah looked at the floor.
"Because Anna believed you would try to solve everything yourself."
I almost smiled.
"She knew me too well."
"Yes."
A pause.
"She also believed you would put yourself in danger."
I looked at Lily playing quietly in the next room.
And suddenly I understood.
Anna wasn't hiding things because she didn't trust me.
She was hiding things because she trusted me to protect Lily.
And she knew protecting Lily might destroy me.
The Hidden Guardian
Rachel studied the trust documents carefully.
"There is something unusual here."
"What?"
She pointed to a paragraph.
"The trust doesn't name a family guardian."
I frowned.
"Then who?"
Rachel read the sentence.
"Anna created a selection process."
"For someone who proves they are acting in Lily's best interest."
I looked confused.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning Evelyn could never automatically become guardian."
"Michael could never automatically become guardian."
"Neither could anyone else."
Then Robert said something that shocked me.
"Anna specifically removed blood relatives from priority consideration."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
His answer was quiet.
"Because she learned blood does not always mean loyalty."
The words stayed with me.
Because they described my entire situation.
My stepmother.
My brother.
My family.
All connected by blood.
And all willing to take my daughter.
The Person Anna Trusted
Later that afternoon, Sarah asked to speak with me privately.
"I need to tell you something."
I looked at her.
"About Anna?"
She nodded.
"I met Anna three times before she died."
My heart sank.
"You knew her?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't I know?"
"Because she asked me not to reveal myself."
I struggled to understand.
"Why would my wife secretly meet a detective?"
Sarah looked at me.
"Because she believed someone close to your family was committing financial crimes."
"Michael?"
She didn't answer immediately.
"She wasn't sure."
A pause.
"But she was sure about one thing."
"What?"
"Someone was trying to make you look like an unfit father."
I closed my eyes.
The same story.
The same plan.
"Did she know she was in danger?"
Sarah became quiet.
Then:
"Yes."
The word hurt more than I expected.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because she received a threat."
I looked up.
"What threat?"
Sarah opened a file.
Inside was a photograph.
A picture of Anna's car.
Before the accident.
On the windshield was a note.
Three words.
STOP INVESTIGATING US.
My hands went cold.
"The police thought it was a random warning."
Sarah said.
"But Anna knew better."
"Why?"
"Because whoever left it..."
She paused.
"Used a phrase only someone inside your family would know."
I looked at her.
"What phrase?"
Sarah turned the page.
The message written on the note continued.
You should have listened to Evelyn.
The room became silent.
Because suddenly the mystery changed.
Evelyn was not just part of the plan.
Someone had warned Anna using Evelyn's name.
Someone wanted Anna to believe Evelyn was the danger.
Or someone wanted us to think that.
That evening, I received a call.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
No voice.
Just a file sent to my phone.
A video.
I opened it.
The footage showed Anna.
The night before she died.
She was standing in the parking garage.
Talking to someone.
Someone whose face was hidden.
But I recognized the voice.
My entire body froze.
Because the person speaking to my wife was someone I trusted.
Someone who had cried at her funeral.
Someone who had told me:
"I will protect your family."
Michael.
But then the video continued.
Anna said something that made my blood run cold.
"You don't understand what Evelyn is planning."
Michael answered:
"I know."
A pause.
"That's why I agreed to help her."
The video ended.
I dropped the phone.
Because the truth was finally becoming clear.
Michael was not just trapped.
He was involved.
But the final question remained.
Why did Anna still try to protect him?
May you like
And why did she leave behind a trust designed to expose everyone?
