CHAPTER 9

CHAPTER 9
The Woman Behind Evelyn
The video changed everything.
Not because it proved Michael was guilty.
I already knew he had lied.
I already knew he had betrayed me.
It changed everything because of one sentence.
"You don't understand what Evelyn is planning."
Anna knew.
She knew Evelyn was dangerous.
She knew Michael was involved.
And yet...
She still left behind clues that could destroy them both.
Why?
I watched the video again.
And again.
Every frame.
Every word.
Every movement.
Michael stood in the parking garage looking nervous.
Not confident.
Not powerful.
Afraid.
Anna looked different.
She wasn't the woman I remembered from photographs.
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret alone for too long.
Then I noticed something.
A reflection.
In the glass behind them.
A third person.
Standing near the elevator.
Watching.
"Sarah."
I called immediately.
She arrived twenty minutes later.
I showed her the video.
She watched silently.
Then she paused the image.
"There."
She pointed.
"The reflection."
I nodded.
"Can you identify her?"
Sarah zoomed in.
The image was blurry.
But the shape.
The hair.
The posture.
Something about it felt familiar.
"Who is she?"
Sarah didn't answer.
Instead, she asked:
"Did Anna have any enemies outside the family?"
I frowned.
"Not that I knew."
"Think carefully."
I tried.
Anna was kind.
She avoided conflict.
She helped people.
Everyone loved her.
Except...
I stopped.
"Except who?"
Sarah asked.
I remembered something.
A conversation from years ago.
Anna standing in the kitchen.
Looking worried.
She said:
"Some people don't get angry when they lose control."
"They get dangerous."
At the time, I thought she was talking about business.
Now...
I wasn't so sure.
The Woman Named Victoria
The next morning, Sarah identified the woman.
Her name was Victoria Hale.
A name I recognized immediately.
Not because I knew her.
Because everyone in the business world knew her.
A billionaire investor.
A corporate strategist.
A woman famous for destroying competitors without ever appearing in public battles.
"Why would she be involved?"
I asked.
Sarah placed a file in front of me.
"Because Anna discovered something."
I opened it.
Inside were financial records.
Companies.
Transfers.
Hidden partnerships.
At the center of everything was one company.
Hale International Holdings.
"What does this have to do with Evelyn?"
Sarah pointed.
"Look closer."
I followed the transactions.
My eyes stopped.
A payment.
From Hale International.
To Evelyn.
Five years ago.
"She was paying her?"
Sarah nodded.
"Not directly."
She showed me another page.
A chain of shell companies.
Designed to hide the connection.
"But Anna found it."
I whispered.
"Yes."
Suddenly, everything connected.
Evelyn didn't create the plan.
She was hired.
Michael didn't create the plan.
He was recruited.
And Anna...
Anna discovered the person behind both of them.
The Real Reason for Lily's Trust
Robert Hayes arrived later that day.
When he saw Victoria Hale's name, his expression changed.
"You know her."
I said.
He was quiet.
"Yes."
"How?"
Robert looked at the trust documents.
"Because Anna created the trust after meeting her."
My heart dropped.
"What?"
Robert sighed.
"Anna was originally working with Victoria."
I stared.
"My wife worked with the woman trying to destroy us?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"Anna thought she was helping her."
Robert explained.
Three years earlier, Anna had discovered suspicious financial activity involving one of my family's companies.
She believed the problem was internal.
She contacted Victoria because Victoria had experience investigating corporate fraud.
But Anna made one mistake.
She trusted the wrong expert.
"Victoria didn't investigate the fraud."
Robert said.
"She used Anna's information."
"For what?"
"To build leverage."
I felt sick.
Anna had unknowingly given a dangerous person the information needed to destroy us.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Robert looked away.
"Because by the time she realized the truth..."
A pause.
"It was too late."
The Woman Who Controlled the Pieces
That evening, we received a surprise visitor.
Not a call.
Not a message.
A person.
Victoria Hale walked into my office.
No security.
No fear.
Just confidence.
She looked exactly like the photographs.
Elegant.
Calm.
Dangerous.
"Daniel Hart."
She smiled.
"I've wanted to meet you."
I stood.
"You were watching my family."
She didn't deny it.
"I was watching a situation."
"A situation?"
"My dear, your family was collapsing long before I arrived."
I felt anger rising.
"You destroyed my wife."
Her expression barely changed.
"No."
A pause.
"Your wife destroyed herself."
My hands tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria walked around the room.
"Anna was intelligent."
"Curious."
"Ambitious."
"But she had one weakness."
"What?"
"She believed everyone could be saved."
The words hit me.
Because they sounded true.
Anna always looked for the good in people.
Even Michael.
Victoria continued.
"She discovered too much."
"What did she discover?"
Victoria smiled.
"The truth about your father."
I froze.
"My father?"
"Yes."
"The man you thought you knew."
I felt the room tilt.
"My father has been dead for years."
"Death does not erase secrets."
She placed a folder on the desk.
Inside was an old photograph.
My father.
Evelyn.
And another person.
A woman.
I recognized her.
Because I had seen her before.
In Anna's hidden files.
The woman behind everything.
Victoria pointed at the photograph.
"Your family fortune was never built the way you were told."
A pause.
"Your father stole something from this woman."
I looked at the picture.
"Who is she?"
Victoria smiled.
"The person who started this entire war."
The door opened.
Detective Collins entered.
Her face was pale.
"Daniel."
I turned.
"What happened?"
She held a file.
"We found the original death report for Anna's accident."
My heart stopped.
"Original?"
She nodded.
"The report was altered."
Silence.
"Someone changed the evidence."
I looked at Victoria.
Then at the file.
Then at the photograph.
And I finally understood.
This was never just about Lily's inheritance.
This was never just about custody.
This was a war that started before I was born.
May you like
And Anna had died trying to end it.
