CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7
The Brotherâs Real Plan
The notebook sat on my kitchen table all night.
I did not touch it.
I did not open it.
I did not want to know what was inside.
Because some truths were not hidden because they were complicated.
They were hidden because they were devastating.
The cover had one word written across it.
ANNA.
My wife's name.
Written by my brother.
The man who held my daughter after she lost her mother.
The man who told me I was not alone.
The man who stood beside me at Anna's funeral and promised:
"I will protect your family."
I finally understood something.
The cruelest betrayal did not come from enemies.
It came from the people who knew exactly where to place the knife.
"Daniel."
Detective Collins' voice pulled me back.
"You need to open it."
I looked at her.
"I don't know if I can."
She understood.
Because this was no longer an investigation.
This was my life.
Rachel Morgan, my attorney, arrived thirty minutes later.
She looked at the notebook.
Then at me.
"Are you ready?"
No.
I wasn't.
But I nodded anyway.
The first pages were not what I expected.
No threats.
No plans.
Just observations.
Daniel leaves work at 5:30.
Lily attends dance class Tuesdays.
Trust meeting scheduled Friday.
My stomach tightened.
Michael had been watching us.
Recording us.
Studying us.
Like we were strangers.
Then the entries changed.
Daniel is emotionally dependent on Lily.
I stared at the sentence.
It was not written like a brother describing another brother.
It was written like an analyst describing a weakness.
The next page.
Grief remains his greatest vulnerability.
The next.
Use Anna's death as evidence of instability.
I closed my eyes.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The court accusations.
The rumors.
The whispers.
They weren't created after the accident.
They were prepared before.
"Keep going."
Detective Collins said softly.
I turned the page.
And saw something that made my hands shake.
A list.
A list of possible witnesses.
Neighbors.
Teachers.
Friends.
Family members.
Beside each name was a note.
Useful.
Uncertain.
Needs pressure.
I looked up.
"Pressure?"
Rachel's face hardened.
"That means manipulation."
Then I saw my name again.
But this time...
There was something different.
A date.
Three years earlier.
Before Anna died.
Before Lily was even old enough to understand.
First attempt failed.
My heart stopped.
"First attempt?"
Nobody answered.
I turned the page.
The handwriting became messier.
More rushed.
Anna noticed the financial movement.
She became suspicious.
Need to remove access before she speaks to Daniel.
I felt like I couldn't breathe.
"Financial movement."
I whispered.
Detective Collins nodded.
"The money Anna mentioned."
I looked at the notebook.
Michael wasn't just trying to take Lily's trust.
He had been trying to reach it for years.
Then we found the page that changed everything.
A name.
Not mine.
Not Anna's.
Someone else.
Evelyn Sterling.
Underneath:
Agreement confirmed.
I looked at Detective Collins.
"Evelyn."
She nodded.
"Your stepmother."
"No."
I shook my head.
"She was working with him."
Rachel corrected me.
"Not him working with her."
She pointed at the notebook.
"Look at the dates."
I did.
My blood went cold.
The first meeting between Michael and Evelyn happened...
Six months before Anna died.
The Money Behind the Plan
The next discovery came from Michael's financial records.
Detective Collins arranged a meeting with a forensic accountant.
His name was David Miller.
He placed a series of documents on the table.
"Your brother has significant debt."
I frowned.
"How much?"
David slid the report forward.
"Almost two million dollars."
I stared.
"That's impossible."
Michael had always seemed successful.
A nice apartment.
Expensive clothes.
Successful career.
But David shook his head.
"That was the appearance."
The word made me uncomfortable.
Appearance.
A word my family had built their lives around.
"How did he lose that much?"
"Investments."
David paused.
"Risky ones."
"Made through accounts connected to Evelyn."
I looked up.
"What?"
He showed me the records.
Money moved.
Companies created.
Transfers hidden.
Michael was not just helping Evelyn.
He needed her.
"Your brother was desperate."
David said.
"He believed controlling Lily's trust would solve everything."
I felt sick.
Because suddenly Michael's actions had an explanation.
Not an excuse.
Never an excuse.
But an explanation.
Greed.
Fear.
Desperation.
The perfect combination for betrayal.
The Confrontation
Michael called me that evening.
I almost didn't answer.
But Detective Collins nodded.
"Answer."
I turned on the recorder.
"Hello."
His voice sounded tired.
"Daniel."
No anger.
No arrogance.
Just sadness.
"I know you found the notebook."
My grip tightened.
"You knew?"
A pause.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised me.
"Why?"
"Because I wanted you to."
I laughed bitterly.
"You wanted me to find proof that you betrayed me?"
"No."
His voice cracked.
"I wanted you to understand."
"Understand what?"
"That I wasn't trying to hurt Lily."
My anger rose.
"You endangered my daughter."
"No."
"I protected her."
The words were so absurd I almost couldn't process them.
"You call this protecting?"
"Daniel..."
His voice lowered.
"Evelyn was going to destroy you."
"She already tried."
"No."
A pause.
"You don't know the whole story."
I stood.
"Then tell me."
Silence.
Then Michael said:
"Anna was not killed by accident."
Everything stopped.
My breathing.
My thoughts.
Everything.
"What did you say?"
"I know what happened that night."
My hand shook.
"Michael..."
"You think I wanted this?"
His voice broke.
"I lost Anna too."
"Then why did you help them?"
A long silence.
Then he whispered:
"Because I was already trapped."
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Detective Collins immediately asked:
"What did he say?"
I looked at her.
"Michael knows what happened the night Anna died."
Her expression changed.
"Are you sure?"
I nodded.
Then she asked the question that made my blood run cold.
"What if Michael isn't the person who killed Anna..."
A pause.
"What if he was the person who helped cover it up?"
That night, we searched through Anna's remaining files again.
And we found something hidden inside a folder labeled:
Family Photos.
Not photos.
A document.
A handwritten note from Anna.
Only one sentence.
"The person who betrayed us is closer than Daniel believes."
Below it was a name.
Not Michael.
Not Evelyn.
Someone I had never suspected.
May you like
Someone who had been standing beside me since the beginning.
