Chapter 1 — The Cameras Never Lie

Chapter 1 — The Cameras Never Lie

For several seconds after David Sterling said the words, nobody moved.

The entire floor is monitored by synchronized security cameras.

Isabella Rossi stared at him.

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

Then parted again.

It was the smallest hesitation.

But Marcus noticed.

So did Elaine.

David noticed it too.

He slipped his phone back into his jacket.

“Security has already secured the recordings,” he said. “Nothing will be deleted. Nothing will be altered.”

Isabella swallowed.

“You're threatening me.”

“No.”

David's voice remained calm.

“I am informing you.”

She looked toward the elevator.

Two security officers stood there.

Another pair guarded the opposite corridor.

The doors behind her were locked.

For the first time since she had entered the hospital suite, Isabella seemed to understand that she was no longer surrounded by people she could manipulate.

She was surrounded by witnesses.

“I need to go home,” she said.

“No,” David replied.

“I've done nothing wrong.”

“Then you have nothing to fear.”

Isabella's eyes flickered.

“But I need to call my lawyer.”

“You may.”

David stepped aside.

“You may also call anyone you wish.”

He paused.

“But you will remain here until the police arrive.”

Isabella's face tightened.

“You can't keep me here.”

David looked at the security guards.

“Watch me.”

Behind the closed doors of the obstetric emergency room, Marcus had never felt so helpless.

The doctors moved quickly.

Machines beeped.

Nurses called out numbers.

Khloe lay beneath bright surgical lights, pale and frightened.

“Blood pressure is dropping.”

Marcus felt his heart stop.

“What does that mean?”

Dr. Caldwell didn't look away from Khloe.

“It means we're monitoring her very closely.”

“Is the baby okay?”

“We don't know yet.”

Marcus grabbed the side rail of the bed.

Khloe reached for his hand.

He immediately took it.

“I'm here.”

Her fingers were cold.

“Marcus…”

“I'm here.”

“Don't let them…”

She struggled to breathe.

“Don't let them take my baby.”

His eyes burned.

“No one is taking our baby.”

Another contraction tore through her.

She cried out.

Marcus bent closer.

“Look at me.”

Her eyes opened.

“Look at me, Khloe.”

She did.

“You're not alone.”

Tears slipped down her temples.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“She was so angry.”

“Who?”

“Isabella.”

Marcus felt something inside him go cold.

“What did she do?”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“She kept saying…”

Her voice broke.

“She said you would never choose me.”

Marcus stared at her.

“She said that?”

Khloe nodded.

“She said once the baby came, you would realize you didn't need me anymore.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“That's not true.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Khloe looked at him.

“Yes.”

He pressed her hand against his lips.

“Then hold onto that.”

The fetal monitor suddenly changed rhythm.

A nurse looked toward Dr. Caldwell.

“Doctor.”

Everyone became still.

Caldwell moved closer to the monitor.

Marcus's heart pounded.

“What is it?”

“We're seeing some fetal distress.”

The room became a blur.

Marcus heard words he couldn't process.

“Prepare ultrasound.”

“Call neonatal.”

“Keep monitoring.”

Khloe began crying.

Marcus felt tears finally break free.

He didn't care who saw.

He didn't care about the company.

The lawsuits.

The billions.

The reputation that had made men twice his age nervous.

None of it mattered.

His wife was lying on a hospital bed.

His unborn child was fighting for every heartbeat.

And somewhere outside that room was the woman who had caused it.

Twenty minutes later, the ultrasound showed something that gave the medical team cautious hope.

The baby's heartbeat was still strong.

But Khloe had suffered significant trauma.

“We need to keep her under observation,” Dr. Caldwell said.

Marcus nodded.

“Do whatever you need.”

“We may need to keep her overnight.”

“Keep her for a week.”

Caldwell looked at him.

“Marcus, this isn't about money.”

“I know.”

“It is about rest and monitoring.”

“Then keep her here as long as necessary.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

“I'm okay.”

He shook his head.

“You don't have to be strong right now.”

“I don't want you to worry.”

“I'm already worried.”

She managed a weak smile.

“I'm sorry.”

His expression changed.

“Never apologize to me for this.”

She looked away.

“I should have fought harder.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“You should never have had to fight at all.”

Outside the emergency room, Isabella sat alone.

Her phone was in her hand.

She had called three people.

Nobody answered.

The first was her attorney.

The second was a friend who owed her money.

The third was someone she had always believed would protect her.

Her screen displayed:

CALL FAILED.

She stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

Unknown Number: We need to talk. Now.

Isabella's face tightened.

She typed:

Who is this?

The response arrived almost immediately.

Someone who knows what happened before tonight.

She stopped breathing.

Another message followed.

And I have the recordings.

Isabella dropped the phone.

At the other end of the hallway, Elaine was watching her.

Elaine had known Isabella for almost three years.

At charity dinners, Isabella had always been charming.

Elegant.

Soft-spoken.

She remembered birthdays.

She complimented dresses.

She donated to children's hospitals.

She cried at weddings.

She knew exactly when to place a hand on someone's arm.

Exactly when to lower her voice.

Exactly when to appear vulnerable.

Elaine had once admired that.

Now she wondered how much of it had been manufactured.

David joined her.

“You saw it.”

Elaine nodded.

“The hesitation.”

“Yes.”

“She knows the cameras exist.”

David looked toward Isabella.

“Or she suspected them.”

Elaine lowered her voice.

“Do you think she planned this?”

David's expression hardened.

“I don't know.”

“Marcus thinks she did.”

“Marcus is angry.”

“Marcus has every reason to be.”

David said nothing.

Elaine looked at the emergency room doors.

“Khloe could have lost the baby.”

“I know.”

“Then we need to know exactly what happened.”

David nodded.

“We will.”

Two hours later, Detective Aaron Cole arrived.

He was in his early forties, quiet, observant, and unimpressed by wealth.

He shook David's hand.

“Mr. Sterling.”

“Detective.”

“Where is the suspect?”

David pointed toward the waiting area.

“Isabella Rossi.”

Cole looked at her.

“She claims she was attacked?”

“Yes.”

“And the victim?”

“My niece.”

“Her husband?”

“Marcus Thorne.”

Cole's expression remained neutral.

“I'd like to speak to him.”

“Not yet.”

David's answer was immediate.

“His wife is still being treated.”

Cole nodded.

“Understood.”

He opened his notebook.

“Then I'll start with the scene.”

The suite looked different now.

The crystal pieces had been photographed.

The chair had been marked.

The position of the furniture had been documented.

Every fragment of evidence had a number beside it.

Detective Cole crouched near the broken crystal.

“Where was Khloe standing?”

Elaine pointed.

“Here.”

“And Isabella?”

“There.”

Cole looked toward the overturned chair.

“Who moved this?”

“No one.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

He stood.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

Cole pointed toward the floor.

“There are scratches.”

“From the chair?”

“Yes.”

He followed the marks.

They ended exactly where Khloe had fallen.

Cole frowned.

“If she attacked Isabella, why did the chair move in this direction?”

Elaine stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I don't know yet.”

He took several photographs.

Then he noticed something else.

A small gold bracelet lay beneath the table.

He picked it up.

“Whose is this?”

Elaine looked.

“Isabella's.”

Cole placed it into an evidence bag.

“Then we have another question.”

“What?”

“Why was it underneath the table?”

The answer came from the cameras.

At 2:17 a.m., Detective Cole sat in the hospital security room.

David stood beside him.

Elaine stood behind them.

Marcus finally arrived.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled.

There was dried blood on one sleeve from when Khloe had been transferred.

“How is she?” David asked.

“Stable.”

“And the baby?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Still fighting.”

David placed a hand on his shoulder.

“We'll get through this.”

Marcus looked at the monitor.

“Show me.”

Cole nodded.

The video began.

The timestamp read:

8:41:12 PM

Khloe entered the suite.

She was carrying a small folder.

Isabella followed.

At first, they appeared calm.

Khloe said something.

Isabella responded.

No sound.

The camera had no audio.

Marcus leaned forward.

Then Isabella stepped closer.

Khloe stepped backward.

Isabella said something else.

Khloe shook her head.

Then—

Isabella shoved her.

Marcus's fists clenched.

The video continued.

Khloe stumbled.

Isabella grabbed her arm.

Khloe pulled away.

The chair tipped.

The crystal vase fell.

Khloe slipped.

Then Isabella pushed again.

Hard.

Khloe fell to the marble.

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Cole paused the recording.

No one spoke.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Play it again.”

Cole did.

The second viewing was worse.

The third was unbearable.

On the fourth, Marcus stopped him.

“That wasn't an accident.”

“No,” Cole said.

“It wasn't self-defense.”

“No.”

Marcus looked at David.

“Why did she lie?”

David's expression was grim.

“That is what we're going to find out.”

Cole continued the footage.

After Khloe fell, Isabella stood over her.

She looked down.

Then she did something that made Marcus's blood run cold.

She looked directly at the camera.

Not accidentally.

Not briefly.

She stared at it.

Then she walked toward the lens.

Her face filled the screen.

She reached upward.

The footage went black.

Marcus stared.

“She knew.”

Cole nodded.

“She knew exactly where the camera was.”

David's eyes narrowed.

“Can she access the security system?”

Cole looked at him.

“That's what I'm investigating.”

Marcus turned.

“Isabella worked here before?”

David nodded.

“She helped with several charity events.”

“Did she have security access?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

David didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Marcus looked at him.

“Uncle David.”

David exhaled.

“She had temporary access credentials during one of the foundation galas.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Find out.”

David nodded.

“I will.”

At 3:12 a.m., Khloe woke.

Marcus was sitting beside her.

She blinked.

“Marcus?”

He immediately stood.

“I'm here.”

“Where's the baby?”

“Still with us.”

She closed her eyes in relief.

He leaned down.

“I saw the footage.”

Her eyes opened again.

“What footage?”

“The cameras.”

Khloe stared at him.

“You believe me?”

Marcus's expression broke.

“I should have believed you before I saw anything.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“I should have known.”

“You were shocked.”

“I saw you on the floor.”

His voice cracked.

“I thought I was going to lose you.”

Khloe reached up and touched his cheek.

“You didn't.”

He covered her hand with his.

“No.”

He kissed her palm.

“I didn't.”

She hesitated.

“Marcus?”

“Yes?”

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“Before she pushed me…”

Khloe's breathing became shallow.

“She said something.”

“What?”

“She said…”

Khloe looked toward the door.

“…that if I didn't leave you, she would make sure our baby never came home.”

Marcus froze.

His entire expression changed.

“What exactly did she say?”

Khloe repeated the words.

Marcus stood.

“Where are you going?”

“To get answers.”

“No.”

Khloe grabbed his hand.

“Stay.”

He looked at her.

She was still pale.

Still trembling.

Still carrying their child.

He sat back down.

“Okay.”

She whispered:

“Don't leave me.”

“I won't.”

Outside the room, David was waiting.

He had heard enough.

He looked at Marcus.

“We have a bigger problem.”

Marcus stepped into the hallway.

“What?”

David held up his phone.

“There are security logs.”

“From tonight?”

“From three months ago.”

Marcus stared.

“What did you find?”

David lowered his voice.

“Isabella didn't just have temporary access.”

He paused.

“She accessed the hospital security network seven times.”

Marcus felt the anger return.

“Why?”

David looked toward the closed door behind them.

“Every access occurred within twenty-four hours of one of your meetings with Khloe.”

Marcus said nothing.

David continued.

“And one of those accesses occurred the same day Khloe's prenatal records were updated.”

Marcus's face went pale.

“Her medical records?”

“Yes.”

“Who gave her access?”

“We don't know.”

“Find them.”

“We will.”

Marcus looked through the glass panel in Khloe's door.

She was asleep.

One hand rested protectively over her stomach.

He stared at her for several seconds.

Then he said quietly:

“This wasn't about Isabella being jealous.”

David looked at him.

“No.”

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“Someone has been watching my wife.”

And somewhere inside the hospital's security network, a hidden file had just been opened.

A file containing Khloe's medical history.

Her pregnancy records.

Her home address.

Marcus's financial information.

And one encrypted note:

PHASE ONE COMPLETE.

Below it was another line.

PHASE TWO BEGINS WHEN THE BABY IS BORN.

May you like

The person who had written it was still watching.

And they were closer than Marcus could possibly imagine.
