Chapter 11 — Marcus Finally Sees the Truth

Chapter 11 — Marcus Finally Sees the Truth

The old property stood beyond the city limits, hidden behind miles of wet woodland and an iron gate that looked as though it had not been opened in years.

Marcus stopped the car before the gate.

He stared through the windshield.

“This is where they kept you?”

Elena nodded.

“When I was six.”

Nathan looked toward the dark building.

“Are you sure?”

Elena's fingers tightened around her seat belt.

“I remember the windows.”

Marcus looked at her.

“What else?”

“A red door.”

“There.”

Elena pointed.

Marcus saw it.

A faded red door beneath a stone arch.

His stomach tightened.

“Then we're in the right place.”

Nathan checked his weapon.

“There's something wrong.”

“What?”

“No lights.”

Marcus looked at the mansion.

“They expect us.”

“That doesn't make it better.”

Elena opened her door.

Marcus stopped her.

“You stay with me.”

She nodded.

They walked toward the entrance.

The gate opened by itself.

A mechanical hum rolled through the night.

Marcus stopped.

“Someone is watching.”

Nathan nodded.

“Definitely.”

They entered.

The front door opened.

No one stood behind it.

Marcus stepped inside.

The smell hit him first.

Dust.

Old wood.

Rain.

And something else.

A faint chemical smell.

Elena stopped breathing.

“This is it.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You remember?”

She nodded.

“I used to sleep upstairs.”

“How long?”

“Three years.”

“Who brought you here?”

Elena looked at him.

“David.”

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

“He told me my parents didn't want me.”

“Your parents?”

“My mother and your father.”

Marcus stared.

“Isabella and Dad.”

“Yes.”

“Why would they abandon you?”

“They didn't.”

Elena's voice became bitter.

“They were told I was dead.”

Marcus stopped.

“What?”

“David told them I died.”

Nathan looked at Marcus.

“That means—”

“He stole a child,” Marcus said.

Elena nodded.

“And he built an entire lie around it.”

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Marcus raised his weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

They climbed.

At the top of the stairs was a long hallway.

At the end stood a single red door.

Elena stopped.

“That was my room.”

Marcus approached.

The door was unlocked.

He opened it.

Inside was a child's bedroom.

A small bed.

A wooden dresser.

Old toys.

On the wall were dozens of photographs.

Marcus stepped closer.

Every photograph showed Elena.

Six years old.

Seven.

Eight.

Nine.

Ten.

Then nothing.

The photographs stopped abruptly.

Elena whispered:

“He moved me.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus looked at the final photograph.

David stood beside Elena.

His hand rested on her shoulder.

On the back was a handwritten message.

THE HEIR MUST NEVER MEET THE OTHER HEIR.

Marcus turned.

“Other heir?”

Nathan took the photograph.

“Maybe you.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed to a second child standing in the background.

A little boy.

Marcus stared.

“That can't be me.”

Elena's face went pale.

“It isn't.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“Then who is he?”

Elena whispered:

“I don't know.”

A voice came from the hallway.

“You were never supposed to find that room.”

Marcus turned.

David stood there.

No guards.

No weapon.

Just a tired expression.

Marcus aimed his gun.

“You took Khloe.”

David shook his head.

“No.”

“Where is she?”

“She was never here.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Don't lie.”

“I am not.”

“Then where is she?”

David looked at Elena.

“She knows.”

Elena stared at him.

“What?”

David said:

“Your mother took her.”

Marcus froze.

“Isabella?”

David nodded.

“She came to the hospital before you could reach her.”

Marcus lowered his weapon slightly.

“Why?”

“To save her.”

“That makes no sense.”

David's expression hardened.

“You've spent your entire life believing that everyone around you was trying to destroy you.”

Marcus said nothing.

“But the truth is worse.”

David stepped closer.

“They were trying to protect you.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“By lying to me?”

“Yes.”

“By hiding my sister?”

“Yes.”

“By manipulating Khloe?”

David shook his head.

“Khloe was never the target.”

“Then who was?”

David looked at Elena.

“You.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

“You were always the target.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“Explain.”

David sighed.

“Your father discovered the truth about the trust.”

“What truth?”

“That the trust wasn't created for money.”

Marcus stared.

“I know.”

“No.”

David shook his head.

“You don't.”

He reached into his jacket.

Then placed an old envelope on the floor.

Marcus picked it up.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father's.

He opened it.

One sentence was written inside.

If Marcus ever learns about Elena, tell him I was not her father.

Marcus's heart stopped.

He looked at Elena.

Then David.

“What does this mean?”

David's voice became quiet.

“Your father wasn't Elena's biological father.”

Elena stepped backward.

“No.”

David nodded.

“Isabella had Elena with another man.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?”

David stared at him.

“Anthony Vale.”

Marcus froze.

“That would make Elena and Khloe sisters.”

“Yes.”

Elena's face went white.

“No.”

David continued.

“Anthony had two daughters.”

“Khloe and Elena.”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at the photographs again.

The two girls.

The hidden children.

The trust.

Everything began connecting.

“Then why did my father protect Elena?”

“Because Anthony was killed.”

“By whom?”

David's expression changed.

“Your father.”

Silence.

Marcus stared.

“You said my father didn't kill anyone.”

“I said he didn't order the murder.”

“Then what happened?”

David took a breath.

“Anthony discovered that Daniel Parker wasn't his biological son.”

Marcus frowned.

“He wasn't.”

“No.”

“And Khloe?”

“Anthony's biological granddaughter.”

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Then why was Daniel listed as her father?”

“Because Anthony wanted to hide Khloe.”

“From whom?”

“From the person who was hunting his family.”

Marcus whispered:

“Who?”

David looked directly at him.

“Your grandmother.”

Marcus froze.

“My grandmother?”

“She was the architect.”

“Of what?”

“The trust.”

David's voice lowered.

“She built the entire inheritance structure to protect Anthony's bloodline.”

Marcus stared.

“But why?”

“Because she knew the family would destroy itself for the money.”

Elena suddenly spoke.

“Then why was I hidden?”

David looked at her.

“Because you were the first child.”

“First child of Anthony?”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't remember him.”

“You were six months old when he disappeared.”

Marcus turned toward David.

“Who killed him?”

David hesitated.

“Isabella.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

“She believed Anthony had betrayed her.”

Elena's face crumpled.

“My mother killed my father?”

David nodded.

“She thought he had chosen the trust over her.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Marcus looked at the photographs.

Everything felt wrong.

Too wrong.

“Then why is Isabella protecting Khloe?”

“Because she finally learned the truth.”

“What truth?”

David looked at him.

“Khloe wasn't Anthony's only surviving child.”

Marcus's eyes widened.

“What?”

“There was another.”

Elena whispered:

“No.”

David nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

David looked toward the hallway.

A young woman stepped into the light.

Marcus froze.

She had dark hair.

Brown eyes.

And a face that looked hauntingly familiar.

Khloe.

Marcus stared.

“No.”

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Marcus.”

Elena stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The woman answered:

“My name is Sofia.”

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Isabella's daughter.”

“Yes.”

“But you were supposed to be eighteen.”

“I am.”

Marcus stared.

“Then why do you look like Khloe?”

Sofia smiled sadly.

“Because we're twins.”

Silence.

Elena shook her head.

“That isn't possible.”

Sofia looked at her.

“Neither is the fact that you and I are sisters.”

Marcus's mind raced.

“Anthony had three daughters.”

Sofia nodded.

“Khloe.”

“Elena.”

“And me.”

Marcus stared at the three names.

Then something clicked.

“The trust.”

Sofia nodded.

“It doesn't require one heir.”

Marcus looked at her.

“It requires all three.”

“Yes.”

“And whoever controls all three controls the trust.”

Sofia smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Marcus looked toward David.

“You knew.”

David nodded.

“For years.”

“You manipulated all of us.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed families.”

“Yes.”

“You kidnapped children.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about my father.”

“Yes.”

Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Why?”

David's expression finally broke.

“Because I believed the money would save us.”

“Us?”

“The family.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You destroyed the family.”

David looked down.

“I know.”

A voice came from behind Marcus.

“Then it's time to tell him the rest.”

Everyone turned.

Evelyn stood in the doorway.

She was pale but standing.

Marcus stared.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked at David.

“You've lied long enough.”

David's eyes filled with something resembling regret.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Marcus, there is one truth nobody has told you.”

“What?”

She looked at Sofia.

Then Elena.

Then finally Marcus.

“Khloe is not Anthony's daughter.”

Marcus froze.

Sofia's smile disappeared.

Evelyn continued:

“She's his granddaughter.”

Marcus frowned.

“But Sofia said they're twins.”

“They are.”

“Then—”

Evelyn took a breath.

“Khloe's biological father is still alive.”

Marcus felt a chill.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

A man stepped into the room.

Older.

Gray-haired.

His face scarred.

Marcus recognized him from the old photographs.

His father.

No.

It couldn't be.

Marcus staggered backward.

“Dad?”

The man looked at him.

And smiled.

“Hello, son.”

The room fell silent.

Marcus couldn't breathe.

His father had supposedly been dead for twelve years.

But he was standing ten feet away.

Alive.

And looking directly at him.

Then the man said the words that destroyed the last piece of Marcus's certainty:

“I didn't die.”

He paused.

“I disappeared.”

Marcus stared at him.

“Why?”

His father looked at David.

Then Evelyn.

Then Sofia.

Finally Marcus.

“Because I was running from the truth.”

“What truth?”

His father's face hardened.

“The truth about who really controls the Thorne family.”

A gunshot suddenly shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Marcus turned toward the sound.

His father pulled a weapon.

“Down!”

Another bullet struck the wall.

Then another.

David dragged Elena behind the desk.

Evelyn grabbed Sofia.

Marcus searched the room for Khloe.

“She isn't here.”

His father looked at him.

“No.”

Marcus stared.

“Where is she?”

His father answered:

“Exactly where they wanted her.”

Marcus felt his heart stop.

“Where?”

His father looked at him with an expression Marcus had never seen before.

Fear.

“Back at the hospital.”

Then Marcus's phone rang.

Khloe's name appeared on the screen.

He answered.

“Khloe?”

No response.

Only breathing.

Then a man's voice whispered:

“Come alone.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

The voice continued:

“Or your wife and your unborn daughter die.”

The call ended.

Marcus looked at his father.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at Elena and Sofia.

The truth had finally revealed itself.

But it had come too late.

Because while Marcus was discovering who his family really was—

someone had already taken Khloe.

May you like

And this time, they weren't asking for money.

They were asking Marcus to choose which person he was willing to lose.
