Chapter 3 — Isabella’s Perfect Lie

Chapter 3 — Isabella’s Perfect Lie
By eight the next morning, Isabella Rossi had transformed herself from a suspect into a victim.
She sat in the private consultation room at Sterling Medical Center with a blanket around her shoulders, a cup of untouched tea between her hands, and tears carefully gathered in the corners of her eyes.
A hospital social worker sat across from her.
“So you're saying Khloe attacked you first?”
Isabella lowered her head.
“I don't want to accuse her.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Isabella took a shaky breath.
“She was angry.”
“About what?”
“I don't know.”
The answer came softly.
Almost sadly.
“She had been under enormous stress.”
The social worker wrote something down.
Isabella glanced at the notebook.
Then continued.
“She has been struggling emotionally since the pregnancy became difficult.”
The social worker looked up.
“Has she ever threatened you?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Not directly.”
That tiny qualification was deliberate.
The social worker noticed.
“So what happened?”
Isabella stared at her hands.
“Khloe confronted me.”
“Why?”
“She thought I was trying to take Marcus away from her.”
“Were you?”
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
She whispered the word.
“I loved Marcus once. Maybe part of me always will. But I would never hurt his wife.”
It was the perfect answer.
Not too defensive.
Not too emotional.
Just vulnerable enough to invite sympathy.
She looked toward the door.
“I wish I had never gone into that room.”
What Isabella didn't know was that Detective Cole was listening.
Not from inside the room.
From the observation area next door.
Every word was being recorded.
And every sentence she spoke was being compared against the security footage.
When Isabella finished, Cole walked into the room.
Her expression changed.
“Detective.”
“Ms. Rossi.”
“I've already told the truth.”
“I hope so.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed the security camera.
“Do you recognize this?”
Isabella stared at it.
“Yes.”
“You knew where it was.”
“No.”
“You looked directly at it.”
“I was frightened.”
“You walked toward it.”
“I don't remember.”
Cole placed another photograph beside it.
A timestamp.
Then another.
Then another.
“Your story says you didn't know the camera was there.”
Isabella swallowed.
Cole leaned back.
“But you accessed the security system seven times.”
“I didn't.”
“You used your credentials.”
“Someone stole them.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Convenient.”
Her eyes flashed.
“I have been attacked, humiliated, and accused. And now you're treating me like a criminal.”
Cole remained expressionless.
“I'm treating you like a witness whose story doesn't match the evidence.”
Isabella's tears disappeared.
Only for a second.
But Cole saw it.
Then they returned.
“I want my lawyer.”
“You can have one.”
“Now.”
Cole stood.
“Of course.”
He turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“One more thing.”
Isabella looked at him.
“Your bracelet was found underneath the table.”
She went pale.
“I lost it.”
“When?”
“I don't know.”
“Before or after Khloe fell?”
Isabella didn't answer.
Cole waited.
Finally she whispered:
“I don't remember.”
“That's interesting.”
He walked out.
The door closed.
Isabella's hands began to shake.
For the first time, her perfect lie had developed a crack.
Marcus was standing beside Khloe's bed when David entered.
“She's asleep.”
David nodded.
“Good.”
Marcus turned.
“Did you hear?”
“About Isabella?”
“Yes.”
“She gave a statement.”
Marcus's expression was cold.
“She's lying.”
“I know.”
Marcus looked toward the sleeping woman.
“She keeps talking about Khloe being unstable.”
David sighed.
“That is only the beginning.”
“What do you mean?”
David placed a folder on the chair.
“Her medical records.”
Marcus frowned.
“I thought those were confidential.”
“They are.”
“Then how did Isabella get them?”
“We're still investigating.”
Marcus opened the folder.
Several pages were missing.
He looked up.
“Where are the prenatal reports?”
“Missing.”
“Which ones?”
“The first ultrasound.”
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“Why would someone steal an ultrasound?”
David didn't answer.
Marcus flipped through the remaining documents.
Then he saw it.
A handwritten note.
Fetal sex confirmed.
His fingers stopped.
He looked at David.
“We never told anyone.”
David nodded.
“Exactly.”
Marcus's voice became quiet.
“It's a boy.”
“Yes.”
“And Isabella knew.”
“Yes.”
“Who else knew?”
“Only you, Khloe, the doctor, and me.”
Marcus stared at the page.
“Then someone inside the hospital told her.”
David nodded.
“Or someone accessed the file.”
Marcus closed the folder.
“Find out who.”
Across town, Thomas Reed entered a dark office.
The blinds were closed.
His phone vibrated.
He answered.
“It's done.”
A woman's voice replied.
“Is he suspicious?”
“Very.”
“Does he know about the trust?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Thomas walked toward the window.
“What about Isabella?”
“She'll hold.”
“For how long?”
“Long enough.”
Thomas frowned.
“You said this would be over before the baby was born.”
“It will be.”
“And Marcus?”
Silence.
Then the woman said:
“Marcus will sign.”
Thomas lowered his voice.
“What if he doesn't?”
“You know what happens if he refuses.”
Thomas's expression darkened.
“I know.”
The call ended.
He stood alone in the office.
On his desk was a photograph.
Marcus.
Khloe.
And an ultrasound image.
The photograph had been taken from outside their home.
On the back was a handwritten message:
THE HEIR MUST NEVER CONTROL THE TRUST.
At Sterling Medical Center, Khloe woke from another restless sleep.
Marcus immediately noticed.
“How are you feeling?”
“Tired.”
“Any pain?”
“A little.”
He pressed the call button.
Khloe stopped him.
“Wait.”
“What?”
She looked at him.
“Did you sleep?”
He smiled.
“Not really.”
“You need to.”
“So do you.”
“I can't sleep when you're watching me.”
“Then don't watch me.”
She smiled weakly.
For a few seconds, the tension disappeared.
Then Khloe said:
“Marcus?”
“Yes?”
“What did Isabella mean when she said I was unstable?”
He hesitated.
“She was trying to hurt you.”
“But why that?”
Marcus sat down.
“Because people believe pregnant women are emotional.”
Khloe looked away.
“I was scared she would make you believe it.”
“I don't.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
She reached for his hand.
“Then there's something I need to tell you.”
“What?”
“When we were alone yesterday…”
She stopped.
“What?”
“Isabella told me something.”
Marcus waited.
“She said your father never intended for you to control the family trust.”
His face changed.
“What?”
“She said the trust was supposed to go to the first male heir.”
Marcus stared at her.
“She knew about the trust?”
Khloe nodded.
“And she said…”
“What?”
“She said the baby would be the reason you lost everything.”
Silence.
Marcus looked toward the window.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
The trust.
The baby.
The missing medical records.
Isabella.
Thomas.
Someone wanted control of the inheritance.
But why attack Khloe?
Because if Khloe died—
the baby became vulnerable.
And if something happened to the baby—
Marcus would remain the sole heir.
Unless there was another beneficiary.
Marcus suddenly remembered the offshore account.
The unborn child.
He stood.
“I need to make a call.”
Khloe caught his wrist.
“Don't go far.”
“I won't.”
He kissed her forehead.
“I promise.”
Detective Cole was waiting outside.
Marcus stepped into the hallway.
“Tell me everything.”
Cole handed him a tablet.
“Someone accessed the trust documents six months ago.”
“Who?”
“Thomas Reed.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Again.”
“Yes.”
“And Isabella?”
“Her credentials were used.”
Marcus stared at the screen.
“What about my father?”
Cole hesitated.
“His name appears too.”
Marcus looked up sharply.
“My father has been dead for twelve years.”
“I know.”
“Then how?”
“We don't know.”
Cole opened another file.
“There was a dormant account opened under his name three months before his death.”
Marcus stared.
“How much?”
“Twenty-four million dollars.”
His expression hardened.
“Where did the money come from?”
Cole shook his head.
“That's what we're trying to determine.”
Marcus felt the ground shift beneath him.
His father.
A secret account.
A trust.
An unborn heir.
And Isabella's perfect lie.
It was no longer a family dispute.
It was an inheritance war.
That afternoon, Isabella finally received her lawyer.
He entered the room carrying a leather briefcase.
“Ms. Rossi.”
“I need to leave.”
“Not yet.”
She stared at him.
“Why?”
He placed a document on the table.
“Because you have a bigger problem.”
“What?”
“Your bank accounts have been frozen.”
Her face went pale.
“What?”
“Your apartment has been placed under temporary legal review.”
“No.”
“Your vehicle too.”
“Who did this?”
“David Sterling.”
Isabella stood.
“He can't.”
“He already did.”
She began pacing.
“What about Marcus?”
“He has not filed anything against you personally.”
“Then why?”
Her lawyer looked at her.
“Because David is moving before Marcus can.”
Isabella stopped.
“What does that mean?”
“He's protecting the family assets.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Marcus will never abandon me.”
The lawyer stared at her.
“After the camera footage?”
“He loves me.”
“Does he?”
She said nothing.
The lawyer closed his briefcase.
“You need to understand something.”
“What?”
“You are no longer dealing with a family.”
Isabella frowned.
“You are dealing with people who have decided to stop protecting you.”
He left.
Isabella stared at the closed door.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message.
YOU PROMISED YOU WOULD HANDLE HER.
Isabella typed:
I DID.
The reply came instantly.
THEN WHY IS SHE STILL ALIVE?
Her fingers froze.
Another message appeared.
YOU HAVE FAILED ONCE.
Then:
YOU WILL NOT FAIL TWICE.
Isabella dropped the phone.
That night, Marcus returned to Khloe's room.
She was asleep.
He stood beside her for a long time.
Then he looked at the ultrasound photograph on the bedside table.
Their son.
A tiny life that had already become the center of a war he had never known existed.
Marcus gently placed his hand over Khloe's stomach.
“I'm going to protect you.”
Khloe stirred.
“Marcus?”
“I'm here.”
She opened her eyes.
“What are you doing?”
“Talking to our son.”
She smiled.
“What did you say?”
“That he's going to have the most annoying father in the world.”
She laughed softly.
“That sounds accurate.”
Marcus smiled.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Khloe's smile disappeared.
The monitor beside her bed suddenly displayed a new message.
HE'S LISTENING.
Marcus stood.
“What the hell?”
The message disappeared.
Then another appeared.
ASK YOUR WIFE ABOUT THE NIGHT SHE MET THOMAS.
Khloe stared at the screen.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Khloe?”
She didn't answer.
“What's the night they're talking about?”
Her face had gone completely white.
“Marcus…”
“What happened?”
“I didn't want to tell you.”
His heart sank.
“Tell me now.”
Khloe looked at him.
“I met Thomas before I met you.”
Marcus stared.
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
“Why?”
She swallowed.
“He knew my father.”
Marcus felt the room become very still.
“What did he know?”
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“He knew why my father disappeared.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“What are you saying?”
Khloe whispered:
“Your father wasn't the only man who kept secrets.”
She looked toward the darkened screen.
“And I think someone has been trying to find me ever since.”
Marcus said nothing.
Outside the hospital window, the city continued moving.
Cars passed.
People walked beneath umbrellas.
Millions of lives continued as if nothing had changed.
But inside that hospital room, Marcus finally understood.
Isabella's lie was only the surface.
Beneath it was a secret connecting their families.
A secret that had survived for years.
May you like
A secret that had now reached their unborn child.
And somewhere in the darkness, someone was waiting for Marcus to discover the truth.
