Chapter 4 — The Woman Behind the Tears

Chapter 4 — The Woman Behind the Tears
The next morning, Marcus woke to the sound of someone crying.
Not Khloe.
Isabella.
Her voice carried down the private hospital corridor, soft enough to sound fragile, loud enough to ensure everyone could hear it.
“I never wanted any of this.”
Marcus stopped outside Khloe's room.
Through the half-open door across the hall, he could see Isabella sitting beside a nurse.
Her face was buried in her hands.
“I loved Khloe,” she whispered.
The nurse touched her shoulder.
“I know this has been difficult.”
“You don't understand.”
Isabella looked up.
“I was trying to protect Marcus.”
Marcus felt his jaw tighten.
Protect me?
He stepped closer.
Isabella noticed him.
Her expression changed instantly.
“Marcus.”
The tears continued.
“I've been waiting for you.”
He said nothing.
She stood.
“I know you're angry.”
“I'm not here to discuss this.”
“But you need to hear me.”
“I've heard enough.”
Her lips trembled.
“I never pushed her.”
Marcus looked directly into her eyes.
“The cameras disagree.”
Isabella lowered her gaze.
“Then the cameras don't show everything.”
“They show you putting your hands on my wife.”
“I was defending myself.”
“From what?”
“She came at me.”
“Why?”
Isabella hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Because she thought I was going to tell you the truth.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What truth?”
Isabella looked toward Khloe's room.
“That she has been lying to you.”
Silence.
Marcus stepped closer.
“About what?”
Isabella's expression became sorrowful.
“Ask her about her father.”
Then she walked away.
Marcus remained still.
For the first time, he understood what made Isabella dangerous.
It wasn't her anger.
It wasn't her ambition.
It was her ability to place one small doubt inside someone's mind and let that doubt grow by itself.
Inside Khloe's room, Marcus found his wife awake.
She was watching him.
“You heard her.”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
“That you lied about your father.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
“I knew this would happen.”
“What would happen?”
“She would use it.”
“Use what?”
“My past.”
Marcus sat beside her.
“Then tell me.”
Khloe looked at him.
“You deserve the truth.”
“Yes.”
“But I'm afraid.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
She swallowed.
“Of what happens after you know.”
Marcus took her hand.
“I'm already in it.”
She stared at him.
“Six years ago, before I met you, my father disappeared.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You know the story everyone was told.”
“What was the real story?”
“My father didn't abandon us.”
Marcus waited.
“He was running.”
“From who?”
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“From the Sterling family.”
Marcus went completely still.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
Six years earlier.
Khloe had been twenty-three.
Her father, Daniel Parker, had worked as an accountant for a private investment company.
He wasn't wealthy.
He wasn't powerful.
He wasn't important enough to attract attention.
At least, that's what Khloe had believed.
Then one night, he came home terrified.
He locked every door.
Closed every curtain.
And told his wife and daughter to pack a bag.
“Where are we going?” Khloe had asked.
Daniel looked at her.
“Somewhere they can't find us.”
“Who?”
He never answered.
The next morning, he disappeared.
His car was found abandoned.
His phone was destroyed.
His bank accounts were empty.
And within a week, the police stopped treating the case as suspicious.
They called it voluntary disappearance.
Khloe never believed them.
Years later, she met Thomas Reed.
He approached her at a charity event.
He knew her father's name.
He knew details nobody outside the family should have known.
And he said one sentence that changed her life.
“Your father didn't disappear. Someone made him disappear.”
Khloe had demanded answers.
Thomas refused.
He only told her:
“Stay away from the Sterling family.”
She didn't listen.
Because several months later, she met Marcus.
And she fell in love.
Marcus listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he looked devastated.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because when I met you, I didn't know your family was involved.”
“You should have told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That you'd think I married you for answers.”
Marcus looked away.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I know.”
His voice softened.
“But you didn't.”
Khloe cried.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“After the wedding.”
“You married me without telling me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“The night before.”
Marcus stared at her.
“You said you were nervous.”
“I was.”
She looked down.
“I was terrified.”
A knock came at the door.
David entered.
He stopped when he saw their faces.
“What happened?”
Marcus stood.
“Her father.”
David's expression changed.
“What about him?”
“You knew.”
It wasn't a question.
David didn't answer.
Marcus's voice hardened.
“You knew who Daniel Parker was.”
David slowly closed the door.
“Yes.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Uncle David?”
“I knew his name.”
“Did you know he was investigating the Sterling family?”
“Yes.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
David sat down.
“Because Daniel believed someone was stealing from your grandfather's company.”
“Who?”
“Your father.”
The room became silent.
Marcus felt as though someone had punched him.
“My father?”
“Your father was suspected.”
“Suspected of what?”
“Moving money through shell companies.”
Marcus shook his head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“Daniel found irregularities.”
“And then disappeared.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at Khloe.
“Your father found something.”
Khloe nodded.
“He told me the same thing.”
David's expression hardened.
“But there was something he didn't know.”
“What?”
David looked at Marcus.
“Your father wasn't the one moving the money.”
Marcus stared.
“Then who was?”
David hesitated.
“Someone inside the company.”
“Who?”
“I never found out.”
Across the city, Isabella stood in front of a mirror.
Her face looked perfect.
Her eyes were red.
Her hair was slightly disheveled.
The image was calculated.
She wanted to look broken.
Not dangerous.
She picked up her phone.
A message waited.
DID HE BELIEVE YOU?
She typed:
HE'S STARTING TO DOUBT HER.
The reply came:
GOOD.
Then:
NOW MAKE HIM DOUBT HIMSELF.
Isabella frowned.
“What do you want?”
No answer.
She typed again.
I NEED MORE TIME.
This time the response came immediately.
YOU DON'T HAVE TIME.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Khloe sleeping in her hospital bed.
Isabella stared at it.
The picture had been taken from inside the hospital.
Her blood ran cold.
She typed:
WHO TOOK THIS?
The response:
THE SAME PERSON WHO TOOK THE FIRST ONE.
Then another photograph appeared.
Marcus standing beside Khloe.
His hand resting over hers.
And beneath it:
SEPARATE THEM.
Back at the hospital, Marcus walked into the security office.
Detective Cole was reviewing footage.
“I need every camera from the last twenty-four hours.”
“Why?”
“Someone photographed my wife inside her room.”
Cole looked up.
“Inside?”
“Yes.”
He immediately called the security supervisor.
“Lock down the floor.”
Within minutes, the investigation changed.
Security staff reviewed badge access.
There were no unauthorized entries.
No broken locks.
No forced doors.
No unexplained visitors.
Then Cole noticed something.
“Wait.”
He rewound the footage.
A maintenance worker entered the corridor.
He pushed a cart.
He stopped outside Khloe's room.
He stood there for seventeen seconds.
Then he left.
Marcus stared.
“Who is he?”
Security checked the badge.
The name appeared.
Daniel Mercer.
Marcus frowned.
“Employee?”
“Contractor.”
“Since when?”
“Three weeks.”
Cole looked at Marcus.
“That's not all.”
“What?”
“He doesn't exist in our original contractor database.”
Marcus felt a chill.
“What do you mean?”
“His identification was created using an old employee number.”
“Whose?”
Cole looked at the screen.
Then slowly turned.
“Daniel Parker.”
Khloe's father's name.
Marcus stared.
“No.”
Cole nodded.
“Someone is using your wife's missing father's identity.”
The search for Daniel Mercer lasted twenty minutes.
By the time security found the maintenance cart, it was abandoned in the basement.
The man was gone.
But inside the cart was a single object.
A small black notebook.
Cole opened it.
The first pages contained nothing.
Then he reached the middle.
Names.
Dates.
Bank transfers.
Hospital records.
And photographs.
Dozens of photographs.
Marcus looked at them.
Some showed Khloe.
Some showed him.
Some showed their house.
Some showed Isabella.
One photograph showed Marcus's father.
The date was twelve years old.
Marcus's hands trembled.
“Who took this?”
Cole shook his head.
Then Marcus saw the final photograph.
It showed Daniel Parker standing beside a man Marcus knew very well.
His father.
The two men were shaking hands.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
WE AGREED TO KEEP THE CHILDREN OUT OF IT.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
“Children?”
David took it from him.
His face changed.
“What?”
David turned the photograph over.
There was another line underneath.
BUT ONE OF THEM ALREADY KNOWS.
Khloe appeared in the doorway.
She had left her room despite the doctor's instructions.
She saw the photograph.
And immediately began crying.
“That's my father.”
Marcus walked toward her.
“Khloe.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“He told me he had never met your father.”
David stared at the photograph.
“He lied.”
Khloe covered her mouth.
“Why?”
Nobody answered.
Then the hospital alarm sounded.
Everyone froze.
A nurse came running down the corridor.
“Mr. Thorne!”
Marcus turned.
“What happened?”
“Your wife's room.”
His heart stopped.
“What?”
“The window.”
They ran.
Khloe's room was empty.
The bed was untouched.
The monitor was still running.
The window was open.
And on the pillow lay a single white envelope.
Marcus picked it up.
His name was written across the front.
Inside was one sentence.
IF YOU WANT YOUR WIFE AND YOUR CHILD ALIVE, COME ALONE.
Marcus's blood ran cold.
David grabbed his arm.
“Don't.”
Marcus looked at him.
“They have Khloe.”
“No.”
David pointed toward the hallway.
Security officers were already running.
“Her room was never breached.”
Marcus stared.
Then he understood.
He turned toward the bed.
The monitor was still showing Khloe's vital signs.
But Khloe was gone.
Cole entered the room.
He looked at the monitor.
Then at the empty bed.
His face hardened.
“That's impossible.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?”
Cole pointed to the screen.
“Because those vitals aren't live.”
He pulled the cable from the monitor.
The heartbeat continued.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
A recording.
Someone had replaced the live feed.
Someone had made them believe Khloe was still in the room.
Marcus stared at the empty bed.
His fists clenched.
“They planned this.”
David nodded.
“Yes.”
“And Isabella?”
Cole looked toward the corridor.
“She disappeared too.”
Marcus's face hardened.
For the first time, he understood the truth.
Isabella's tears had never been about guilt.
They had been about buying time.
She hadn't been trying to escape.
She had been distracting everyone.
And while the hospital watched her—
someone else had taken Khloe.
The woman behind the tears had finally revealed what she was protecting.

But the person giving Isabella orders was still hidden.
And Marcus was about to discover that the person closest to him had known about the plan all along.
