Chapter 1 – The Fall

Chapter 1 – The Fall
The first sound wasn't the scream.
It was the champagne glass.
Crystal shattered across polished marble, echoing through the grand ballroom like the crack of a gunshot.
Then came Elena's voice.
"Please... stop!"
More than two hundred guests turned toward the sweeping marble staircase that curved elegantly through the center of the DeLuca mansion.
The orchestra stopped playing.
Conversations died mid-sentence.
Time itself seemed to hesitate.
At the top of the staircase stood Elena DeLuca, one hand gripping the carved oak railing, the other wrapped protectively around the gentle curve of her pregnant belly.
Eight months.
She had been glowing all evening.
Now she looked terrified.
Standing only inches away was Vanessa Monroe.
Beautiful.
Perfectly dressed.
Smiling.
Until she wasn't.
With one swift movement, Vanessa shoved Elena with both hands.
It wasn't hesitation.
It wasn't an accident.
It was deliberate.
Elena's eyes widened.
"No!"
Her heel slipped against the polished marble.
For one impossible second, she seemed suspended in the air.
Then gravity took over.
Her body struck the first step with a sickening crack.
A gasp swept through the ballroom.
She tumbled again.
And again.
Each impact echoed through the mansion.
The white roses decorating the staircase scattered across the steps.
A trail of crimson followed them.
By the time Elena reached the bottom, she wasn't moving.
"Elena!"
Adrian DeLuca shoved guests aside with enough force to send several stumbling backward.
Nothing else existed.
Not the horrified faces.
Not the terrified whispers.
Only his wife.
He dropped to his knees beside her.
"Elena."
His voice trembled.
"I'm here."
Blood seeped across the marble beneath her head.
One trembling hand rested over her stomach.
The other searched blindly until it found Adrian's sleeve.
She clutched it with surprising strength.
Her breathing was shallow.
Pain twisted across her face.
"Adrian..."
"I'm here."
"You'll be okay."
He wasn't sure whether he was trying to convince her...
Or himself.
She opened her eyes just enough to meet his.
There was fear in them.
Not for herself.
For their child.
"Our baby..."
Adrian carefully placed his hand over hers.
"I won't let anything happen."
A tear escaped the corner of her eye.
Then she whispered six words that froze every person nearby.
"Don't let them leave."
Slowly...
Adrian lifted his head.
His eyes climbed the staircase.
Vanessa still stood exactly where she'd been.
Only now...
She no longer looked confident.
Standing beside her was Victor Langston.
His uncle.
His father's closest friend for more than thirty years.
Victor's expensive tuxedo was immaculate.
His silver hair perfectly combed.
But the calm expression he'd worn moments earlier had disappeared.
Around them, guests began stepping away.
Not from Elena.
From Vanessa.
And Victor.
People had seen what happened.
They hadn't expected witnesses.
Adrian rose slowly.
His tailored suit was stained with his wife's blood.
His face showed no anger.
That frightened people even more.
He looked toward the mansion's security chief.
"Lock every gate."
The man hesitated.
"Sir?"
"No one leaves."
His voice carried across the silent ballroom.
"Until the police arrive..."
"...this house is closed."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
She descended two steps.
"It was an accident."
No one answered.
She forced another smile.
"She lost her balance."
Still...
Silence.
Victor finally spoke.
"Adrian."
His voice remained smooth.
"Your wife needs medical attention."
Adrian didn't look at him.
"She's getting it."
Guests moved aside as paramedics rushed through the front entrance.
Someone had already called emergency services.
The lead medic knelt beside Elena.
"We need space."
Adrian reluctantly stepped back.
The medic examined Elena's pupils.
Then looked toward his partner.
"Possible skull fracture."
He gently touched Elena's abdomen.
"Call obstetrics."
Adrian felt the room spinning.
"What about the baby?"
The medic didn't answer.
Which was answer enough.
Across the ballroom, whispers spread rapidly.
"I saw her."
"Vanessa pushed her."
"There was no slipping."
"Oh my God..."
"What was she thinking?"
One woman covered her mouth.
Another quietly started crying.
The orchestra remained frozen, instruments still in hand.
A violinist stared at the blood staining the white marble beneath the grand staircase.
The wedding anniversary gala had transformed into a crime scene in less than ten seconds.
Vanessa looked desperately toward Victor.
"Do something."
He kept his expression controlled.
"Everyone needs to calm down."
A man's voice interrupted him.
"No."
Every head turned.
An older gentleman stepped forward from the crowd.
His name was Harold Bennett.
For over forty years, he'd served as chief financial advisor to the DeLuca family.
Few people noticed him.
Everyone trusted him.
Tonight...
That changed.
Harold looked directly at Adrian.
"I think there's something you should know."
Victor's face tightened almost imperceptibly.
"This isn't the time."
Harold ignored him.
"It became the time..."
"...the moment Elena hit those stairs."
The paramedics carefully lifted Elena onto a stretcher.
She cried out in pain.
Adrian immediately took her hand again.
"I'm coming with you."
She shook her head weakly.
"No."
"I'll be right behind you."
Again...
She shook her head.
"Listen..."
Her breathing hitched.
"They know..."
"They know I found it."
"What?"
"The accounts."
She struggled to speak.
"The money..."
Her eyes drifted toward Victor.
Then Vanessa.
Before she lost consciousness, she whispered,
"Don't trust..."
The words never finished.
The monitor beside the stretcher emitted a sharp warning tone.
"Blood pressure's dropping!"
"Move!"
The medical team rushed her toward the ambulance.
Adrian stood frozen for only a heartbeat.
Then he turned back toward the ballroom.
Toward the people responsible.
Victor adjusted his cufflinks.
Calm.
Measured.
Almost bored.
"I'm sure there's an explanation."
Adrian took one slow step forward.
"So am I."
Another step.
"And you're going to give it."
Vanessa suddenly raised her voice.
"She was spying on us!"
Victor shot her a sharp look.
Too late.
The room had heard.
Harold closed his eyes.
"You fool..."
"What did you say?"
Adrian asked quietly.
Vanessa realized her mistake.
"I..."
"I didn't mean..."
Harold interrupted.
"She discovered the missing estate funds."
The ballroom erupted into shocked whispers.
"What funds?"
Adrian demanded.
Harold looked at Victor.
"For the last three years..."
"...millions have disappeared from the DeLuca Family Trust."
Victor laughed softly.
"That's absurd."
Harold reached inside his jacket.
"I brought copies."
He removed a thick envelope.
Bank statements.
Wire transfers.
Corporate filings.
Every document stamped with official seals.
"I was going to show Elena tonight."
Victor's composure cracked.
"You senile old man."
Harold didn't flinch.
"She figured it out before I could."
Adrian accepted the envelope.
The first page alone made his stomach tighten.
Transfers totaling nearly twelve million dollars.
Offshore accounts.
Companies he'd never heard of.
Every authorization...
Bore Victor's signature.
"No..."
Adrian whispered.
Victor stepped forward.
"Those records are incomplete."
Harold answered immediately.
"No."
"They're devastating."
Vanessa suddenly spun toward the entrance.
She had made a decision.
Run.
She pushed through the crowd.
High heels clicking furiously across the marble floor.
She almost reached the front doors.
Almost.
The mansion's chief of security calmly pressed a button.
Massive steel doors locked with a heavy metallic clang.
Vanessa yanked desperately at the handles.
They wouldn't move.
Behind her...
Adrian's voice echoed through the hall.
"I told you."
He walked toward her slowly.
"No one leaves."
The distant sound of police sirens grew louder.
Closer.
Then stopped outside the mansion gates.
Blue and red lights flashed through the stained-glass windows.
Guests instinctively moved away from Victor and Vanessa, leaving them standing alone in the center of the ballroom.
Harold looked toward the ceiling.
"There is one more thing."
Adrian turned.
"What?"
Harold pointed upward.
"The security cameras."
Every face lifted.
Small black cameras were mounted discreetly in each corner of the grand hall.
Including one directly above the staircase.
Harold's voice remained steady.
"They recorded everything."
For the first time that night...
Victor Langston looked genuinely afraid.
And Adrian realized something far worse than attempted murder had just unfolded.
This wasn't a crime of passion.
May you like
It was a carefully planned execution.
