Chapter 2 – The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 2 – The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The ambulance disappeared through the mansion gates with its siren screaming into the night.
Adrian stood motionless for only a second.
Every instinct told him to follow Elena.
Every instinct except one.
The look in her eyes before she lost consciousness.
Don't let them leave.
She hadn't been asking him to protect himself.
She had been asking him to protect the truth.
Adrian turned to the chief of security.
"No one enters the surveillance room."
"Yes, sir."
"And if anyone tries to leave..."
The guard nodded.
"They won't."
Only then did Adrian get into his car and race toward St. Matthew's Medical Center.
The emergency room doors burst open as paramedics wheeled Elena inside.
"Thirty-two years old."
"Thirty-four weeks pregnant."
"Severe head trauma."
"Possible placental abruption."
The doctors disappeared through swinging double doors.
Adrian barely kept up.
A nurse stopped him.
"I'm sorry, sir. You can't go any farther."
"My wife is in there."
"I know."
"Our baby..."
The nurse hesitated before speaking gently.
"The next hour will be critical."
She guided him toward the waiting room.
"I'll update you as soon as we know anything."
The waiting room felt impossibly quiet.
Minutes stretched into hours.
Every time the operating room doors opened, Adrian stood.
Every time...
The doctor walked past him.
Not yet.
His suit was still stained with Elena's blood.
He stared at the crimson marks across his sleeve.
The same sleeve she had held with her last ounce of strength.
He could still hear her voice.
They know I found it.
Found what?
The money?
Something else?
Before he could think further, his phone vibrated.
It was Harold Bennett.
"I've secured the surveillance footage."
Adrian stood immediately.
"Did it record everything?"
"Everything."
A pause.
"But there's something strange."
"What?"
"The footage confirms Vanessa pushed Elena."
"I already know that."
"It's what happened before the push that worries me."
An hour later, Adrian returned to the mansion.
Police officers had sealed off the grand staircase with yellow crime-scene tape.
Guests were being interviewed one by one.
Vanessa sat alone in the library.
Her expensive evening gown was wrinkled.
Mascara streaked down her cheeks.
She looked frightened.
Victor, however, remained composed.
He spoke calmly with his attorney as though attending a business meeting instead of a criminal investigation.
Detective Laura Hayes approached Adrian.
"I'm Detective Hayes."
He nodded briefly.
"Your wife?"
"Still in surgery."
"I'm sorry."
She handed him a tablet.
"We've reviewed the security footage."
Adrian took it without a word.
The recording began ten minutes before the fall.
Guests laughed.
Champagne flowed.
Music filled the ballroom.
Then Elena appeared at the top of the staircase.
She wasn't alone.
Victor stepped in front of her.
There was no audio.
Only images.
But his expression was unmistakable.
He was angry.
Elena folded her arms.
She refused to back away.
Vanessa approached from behind.
Victor said something.
Elena shook her head.
She reached into her handbag.
Victor lunged toward it.
She pulled away.
Then...
Vanessa shoved her.
Not once.
Twice.
The second push sent Elena over the edge.
The video ended with Adrian rushing into frame.
He watched it twice.
Then a third time.
His jaw tightened.
"This wasn't an argument."
Detective Hayes nodded.
"No."
"It was an ambush."
Vanessa insisted on speaking.
"I didn't mean to hurt her."
Detective Hayes looked up from her notes.
"You pushed a pregnant woman down a staircase."
"I panicked."
"Why?"
Vanessa stared at the table.
"I thought she'd ruin everything."
"What exactly?"
No answer.
Hayes leaned forward.
"Did Victor tell you to push her?"
Vanessa's breathing quickened.
"No."
"Did he pay you?"
"No."
"Did he threaten you?"
"No."
Every answer came too quickly.
Too perfectly.
Detective Hayes closed her notebook.
"We'll continue later."
Victor requested his lawyer before answering any questions.
His confidence unsettled Adrian.
Almost as though Victor believed he still controlled the situation.
As officers escorted him toward another interview room, Victor stopped beside Adrian.
"This family has survived scandals before."
Adrian looked at him coldly.
"This isn't a scandal."
Victor smiled faintly.
"It's business."
"No."
Adrian's voice hardened.
"It's attempted murder."
Victor's smile disappeared.
Near midnight, Harold motioned Adrian into his office.
The old accountant closed the door carefully.
"I never trusted Victor."
"Then why wait until tonight?"
Harold removed several thick binders from a locked cabinet.
"I needed proof."
He spread documents across the desk.
Bank transfers.
Property deeds.
Investment reports.
Each page painted a darker picture than the last.
"For nearly four years, someone has been siphoning money from the DeLuca Family Trust."
"How much?"
Harold sighed.
"We originally believed six million."
He opened another binder.
"We were wrong."
Adrian stared at the final balance sheet.
The number seemed impossible.
$38,742,116
Nearly forty million dollars.
Gone.
"How?"
Harold pointed toward a complicated network chart.
"Shell companies."
"Fake construction contracts."
"Phantom maintenance expenses."
"Charitable foundations."
Every path eventually led to one signature.
Victor Langston.
"But he couldn't approve transfers alone."
Harold nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
"There had to be someone inside."
Adrian frowned.
"You think he had help?"
"I know he did."
The office door opened quietly.
A young woman stepped inside.
She wore simple business clothes and carried a laptop.
"Sophia?"
Adrian recognized her immediately.
Elena's personal financial assistant.
She looked exhausted.
"I've been trying to reach Elena all night."
Adrian's face softened.
"She's in surgery."
Sophia closed her eyes briefly.
"I was afraid of that."
She placed the laptop on Harold's desk.
"I think you should see this."
The screen displayed months of encrypted financial records.
Sophia entered a password.
Folders appeared.
One was labeled:
PRIVATE INVESTIGATION
Another:
DO NOT TRUST VICTOR
A third made Adrian's heart stop.
IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME
He looked at Sophia.
"What is this?"
She swallowed.
"Elena started documenting everything eight months ago."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"She wanted to."
Sophia hesitated.
"But she believed your phone was being monitored."
Adrian stared at her.
"By who?"
She didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The folder contained photographs.
Secret meetings.
Offshore account statements.
Copies of forged invoices.
Emails deleted from company servers.
Every piece of evidence pointed toward Victor.
But one file stood out from all the others.
A spreadsheet titled:
UNKNOWN PARTNER
Adrian opened it.
Dozens of payments had been sent to someone identified only by the initials:
V.M.
"Vanessa Monroe?"
Sophia nodded.
"Three million dollars over eighteen months."
Adrian looked toward the library where Vanessa was being questioned.
"So she wasn't just his accomplice."
"No."
Sophia whispered.
"She was on his payroll."
Detective Hayes entered the office moments later.
"We've completed the first interviews."
"And?"
"Most guests confirm Vanessa pushed Elena."
"What about Victor?"
"He claims he was trying to stop an argument."
Harold laughed bitterly.
"Of course he does."
Hayes placed another document on the desk.
"We also searched Vanessa's purse."
Inside was a cashier's check.
Amount:
$500,000
Issued that morning.
The sender:
Langston Holdings.
Victor's private company.
Adrian felt his anger rising.
"Half a million dollars."
Sophia looked at the date.
"It was issued just hours before the gala."
Detective Hayes nodded.
"We're obtaining a warrant for Victor's financial records."
Harold quietly added,
"You'll need more than that."
He walked toward the bookshelf in the corner of his office.
After checking that no one was watching, he pressed against one of the carved wooden panels.
A hidden compartment slid open.
Inside sat a small steel safe.
Harold entered a six-digit code.
The door unlocked with a soft click.
He reached inside and removed a black velvet pouch.
From it came a single silver key.
Adrian frowned.
"What is it?"
Harold placed the key in his hand.
"Elena left this with me yesterday."
"She said if anything happened to her..."
Harold's voice trembled.
"...I was to give it only to you."
Attached to the key was a small handwritten tag.
In Elena's elegant script were five simple words:
Safe Deposit Box 317.
Adrian turned the key over in his fingers.
"What did she keep there?"
Harold met his eyes.
"I don't know."
A long silence filled the room.
Then Sophia spoke.
"I think she wanted you to find out."
Far away, Adrian's phone rang.
It was the hospital.
His heart lurched.
He answered immediately.
"Mr. DeLuca?"
The doctor's voice was calm, but strained.
"Your wife survived the surgery."
Relief flooded through him.
"And the baby?"
There was a pause.
"The baby is alive..."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"...but there were complications."
"What kind of complications?"
"You should come immediately."
The call ended.
As Adrian slipped the silver key into his pocket, he had the unmistakable feeling that whatever waited inside Safe Deposit Box 317 would not just expose a theft.
May you like
It would expose a secret someone had been willing to kill for.
