Chapter 9 – The Second Will

Chapter 9 – The Second Will

The call from Sophia ended, but the silence it left behind lingered like smoke.

Adrian lowered his phone slowly.

No one in Elena's hospital room moved.

Detective Laura Hayes was the first to speak.

"Tell me exactly what she said."

Adrian repeated every word.

Hayes looked toward Samuel Reeves.

"You knew about a second will?"

Samuel's expression remained unreadable.

"I suspected."

"You suspected?"

"I never saw it."

"But Robert once told me..."

He stopped.

"What?"

Samuel took a slow breath.

"He said his father had written two wills."

Harold Bennett shook his head in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

Samuel looked at him.

"Legally?"

"Yes."

"Practically?"

"No."

Harold frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"If Giovanni DeLuca wrote one will..."

Samuel said quietly,

"...and someone replaced it before probate..."

"...the court would never know."

The realization settled over everyone.

Someone hadn't merely stolen money.

They might have stolen an entire inheritance.

Hayes closed her notebook.

"We're going to Elena's office."

Adrian looked toward his wife.

"I'll stay with her."

Elena squeezed his hand.

"No."

"You have to finish this."

"What if—"

She interrupted him with a faint smile.

"I survived Victor."

"I'm not letting paperwork defeat me."

Despite everything, Adrian smiled.

"I'll come back."

"You'd better."

An hour later, Adrian, Hayes, Samuel, and Harold entered DeLuca Holdings through a side entrance.

Police officers had already sealed Elena's office.

The lock showed no signs of forced entry.

Hayes frowned.

"They had a key."

Inside, everything appeared untouched.

The books remained neatly arranged.

The laptop still sat on the desk.

Family photographs stood exactly where Elena had left them.

Nothing looked disturbed.

Until Sophia pointed toward the filing cabinet.

"That drawer."

It was slightly open.

Only by a fraction.

But Elena would never have left it that way.

Sophia unlocked the cabinet.

Rows of meticulously labeled folders filled the drawer.

Annual Reports.

Board Minutes.

Estate Trust.

Tax Records.

Then an empty space.

Dust outlined the shape of a missing file.

Sophia swallowed.

"It was right here."

Hayes photographed the cabinet.

"What was written on it?"

Sophia answered quietly.

"Will – Original."

Harold searched the remaining folders.

"They ignored everything else."

Millions of dollars in financial records remained untouched.

Only one document had disappeared.

"The thief knew exactly what they wanted."

Samuel nodded.

"They came for history."

Not money.

History.

As crime scene technicians dusted the office for fingerprints, Adrian noticed something lying beneath Elena's desk.

A single ivory envelope.

Half-hidden beneath the leg of her chair.

It hadn't been there before.

He bent down carefully.

Across the front, written in black ink, were three words.

You're Too Late.

Hayes immediately stopped him.

"Don't touch it."

A technician slipped on gloves and opened the envelope.

Inside...

There was only one sheet of paper.

Typed.

No signature.

The wrong son inherited everything.

Below the sentence was a single symbol.

A black raven.

Samuel stared at it.

His face drained of color.

"No..."

Hayes noticed immediately.

"You recognize it."

Samuel nodded slowly.

"It was Nicholas's."

"What?"

Harold looked confused.

"The raven."

Samuel pointed toward the paper.

"Nicholas used it on every letter."

"It was his personal seal."

Adrian stared at him.

"So Nicholas sent this?"

Samuel hesitated.

"I don't know."

"But someone wants us to believe he did."

Just then, Sophia called from Elena's computer.

"Mr. DeLuca..."

"I found something."

The hard drive had automatically backed up every document Elena created.

Most files had already been copied to secure cloud storage.

Except one.

Sophia clicked it open.

The title read:

Comparison of Two Wills

The document wasn't the will itself.

It was Elena's analysis.

She had compared two versions line by line.

One was labeled:

Filed Probate Copy

The other:

Photographed Original

Hayes leaned closer.

"She photographed the original?"

Sophia nodded.

"Months ago."

"Before it disappeared."

Adrian's pulse quickened.

"Open it."

The scanned image filled the monitor.

It was Giovanni DeLuca's last will and testament.

Dated twenty-eight years earlier.

At first glance...

It appeared ordinary.

Until Sophia highlighted several paragraphs.

"The ink."

Harold adjusted his glasses.

"Different color."

Sophia nodded.

"And different pressure."

She enlarged the image.

The final page clearly showed where one section had been removed and replaced.

Not digitally.

Physically.

The paper fibers didn't match.

Someone had altered the original document before it was filed.

Hayes whispered,

"My God..."

The replacement paragraph read:

All controlling shares of the DeLuca Family Trust shall pass exclusively to my son, Robert DeLuca.

Sophia clicked the second photograph.

Elena's earlier image.

The original sentence appeared.

Everyone read it twice.

No one spoke.

Then Adrian read it aloud.

The DeLuca Family Trust shall be divided equally between my sons, Nicholas DeLuca and Robert DeLuca, who shall govern the estate together.

Silence.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

Harold removed his glasses.

His hands shook visibly.

"Equal ownership..."

Samuel nodded.

"Exactly."

"Neither brother inherited everything."

"Someone changed the will."

Hayes looked toward Adrian.

"And whoever changed it created twenty-eight years of war."

Adrian stared at the screen.

His father had never stolen his brother's inheritance.

Someone had stolen it from both of them.

Robert spent years believing his father had chosen him.

Nicholas believed his brother had betrayed him.

Both had been victims.

Hayes folded her arms.

"We need the original."

Sophia shook her head.

"They took it."

"No."

Samuel spoke quietly.

"They took Elena's copy."

Everyone looked at him.

"The court keeps the probate original."

Harold frowned.

"Unless..."

Samuel finished the thought.

"...someone replaced that one too."

Within the hour, a judge approved an emergency order.

The probate archives opened under police supervision.

Deep inside the county records office, an elderly clerk unlocked a fireproof vault.

Shelf after shelf held wills dating back fifty years.

Finally...

She removed one worn leather folder.

Estate of Giovanni DeLuca.

Hayes carefully opened it.

The room fell silent.

The pages were there.

All of them.

Including the final page.

Harold immediately compared it with Elena's scanned copy.

"They match."

Adrian frowned.

"Then why—"

Sophia interrupted.

"No."

She pointed toward the signatures.

"Look closely."

The judge's signature was genuine.

The witnesses' signatures were genuine.

But Giovanni DeLuca's signature...

Stopped halfway through the final stroke.

The ink changed color.

Harold's eyes widened.

"It was traced."

A forensic examiner stepped forward.

After only a few minutes beneath a microscope, she looked up.

"I can confirm the signature has been altered."

Hayes asked the question everyone feared.

"Can you estimate when?"

The examiner nodded.

"The alteration occurred after the document was signed."

"Several days later."

The room erupted into quiet conversation.

A forged will.

A forged signature.

A missing original.

Everything Elena suspected was true.

Then the clerk spoke hesitantly.

"There's something else."

Everyone turned.

She removed a small envelope clipped to the back of the file.

"It was never cataloged."

Hayes carefully opened it.

Inside rested a folded handwritten note.

Only one sentence appeared.

In Giovanni DeLuca's unmistakable handwriting.

If this page is missing, trust Margaret. She knows where I hid the truth.

Adrian felt his heartbeat pounding.

"My mother..."

Samuel whispered,

"Robert never told us."

Hayes looked at Adrian.

"Did your mother ever mention hiding anything?"

Before he could answer, his phone rang again.

It was the neonatal intensive care unit.

He answered immediately.

"Mr. DeLuca..."

The nurse sounded urgent.

"Your wife has disappeared."

Adrian's blood ran cold.

"What do you mean disappeared?"

"Someone claiming to be from hospital administration transferred her room."

A pause.

"We've checked every floor."

"Mrs. DeLuca is gone."

The phone nearly slipped from Adrian's hand.

Because Elena hadn't been kidnapped for revenge.

She had been taken...

May you like

Before she could reveal where Margaret DeLuca had hidden the truth.
