Chapter 14 – The Baby's Promise

Chapter 14 – The Baby's Promise

The drive to DeLuca Manor was silent.

No sirens.

No conversation.

Only the relentless rhythm of rain striking the windshield.

Adrian gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

Victor was dead.

Executed inside police headquarters.

If the broadcast had been genuine, then the Chairman's influence reached far beyond the DeLuca family.

No place was safe.

Not even a police station.

Beside him, Detective Laura Hayes stared at the road ahead.

"Until we confirm Victor's death ourselves," she said quietly, "we treat everything we saw as possible manipulation."

Adrian nodded, but his mind was elsewhere.

On Elena.

On their son.

On the promise he had almost failed to keep.

Before heading to the manor, Adrian insisted on making one stop.

St. Matthew's Medical Center.

The neonatal intensive care unit was peaceful, almost unreal compared to the violence that had consumed the last few days.

Tiny heart monitors beeped softly.

Warm lights glowed above rows of incubators.

A nurse smiled gently as Adrian and Elena approached.

"He's been waiting for you."

Elena laughed through her tears.

"I don't think newborns wait."

The nurse smiled.

"Maybe not."

"But he knows your voices."

Their son slept peacefully beneath a thin blue blanket.

His tiny chest rose and fell with steady determination.

The bruises on Elena's wrists seemed to disappear for a moment as she reached into the incubator.

The baby's small fingers wrapped around hers.

Adrian felt something inside him change.

For days he had been driven by rage.

By revenge.

By the need to uncover every lie.

Now...

There was something stronger.

Hope.

"What should we name him?" Elena whispered.

Adrian looked down at the child.

His father had been Robert.

His grandfather Giovanni.

Their family history was stained with betrayal.

He refused to let that darkness decide his son's future.

"What about..."

He smiled.

"...Lucas?"

Elena looked at him.

"Why Lucas?"

"Because it means light."

She smiled through fresh tears.

"Then Lucas it is."

The nurse quietly wrote the name on the incubator card.

Lucas DeLuca.

Adrian leaned close to his son.

"I don't know if you can understand me yet."

"But I'm going to tell you something anyway."

His voice trembled.

"I spent years believing strength meant winning."

"I was wrong."

He gently touched the baby's tiny hand.

"Strength means protecting the people you love."

"I promise..."

"...you'll never inherit the hatred I inherited."

Elena squeezed his shoulder.

"And you'll never have to earn our love."

The baby's fingers tightened around Adrian's.

It was only a reflex.

But to Adrian...

It felt like an answer.

Detective Hayes quietly stepped into the room.

"I hate to interrupt."

Her expression told Adrian everything.

"They confirmed it?"

Hayes nodded.

"The interrogation room was empty."

"What?"

"The live broadcast was prerecorded."

Adrian frowned.

"So Victor..."

"...escaped."

Hayes nodded.

"With help from someone inside headquarters."

The Chairman had planned another deception.

While everyone rushed toward the bunker...

Victor had disappeared.

Again.

As they prepared to leave the hospital, the elderly nurse who had cared for Lucas stopped Adrian.

"Mr. DeLuca."

She held out a small white envelope.

"A man asked me to give you this."

"When?"

"What did he look like?"

"He was older."

"Gray hair."

"He walked with a cane."

Samuel?

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Robert DeLuca standing beside Margaret in the garden of DeLuca Manor.

The picture had been taken the day before Robert died.

Written across the back, in Robert's handwriting, were the words:

If our son ever reads this, tell him to open the nursery.

Adrian frowned.

"The nursery?"

Elena looked up sharply.

"The old nursery."

"The one in the east wing?"

He nodded slowly.

"It was locked after my father died."

Samuel had once told him Margaret never allowed anyone inside again.

An hour later, police vehicles surrounded DeLuca Manor.

The mansion looked exactly as Adrian remembered.

Elegant.

Silent.

Haunted.

Every room carried memories.

Some joyful.

Most painful.

The east wing had remained untouched for five years.

Dust covered the hallway.

The nursery door stood at the end.

Still locked.

Harold Bennett produced an old brass key from the estate records.

"I never knew why your mother asked me to keep this."

Adrian unlocked the door.

It creaked open.

The nursery was frozen in time.

Wooden toys rested neatly on shelves.

A rocking horse stood beside the window.

Children's books lined a small bookcase.

Everything had been preserved exactly as it had been when Adrian was a child.

Elena looked around in silence.

"Your mother never packed anything away."

"No."

Adrian whispered.

"She was waiting."

Samuel slowly crossed the room.

"Robert told me he built something in here."

"What?"

"He never said."

Adrian searched carefully.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Until Lucas began crying.

The sound echoed through the baby monitor Elena carried from the hospital nursery—a live audio link the nurses had insisted she keep during the brief visit.

The sudden cry made everyone stop.

At the same moment...

The old rocking horse moved.

Just slightly.

No one had touched it.

Adrian frowned.

He knelt beside it.

The wooden base wasn't resting evenly on the floor.

He pushed it aside.

Beneath it...

A loose floorboard.

Hayes carefully pried it open.

Inside lay a small steel box.

Untouched by time.

The same black raven symbol was carved into its lid.

Samuel looked confused.

"Why would Robert use the Chairman's symbol?"

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

He traced the carving with his finger.

"It's different."

The raven faced the opposite direction.

A mirror image.

Elena smiled faintly.

"It's not his symbol."

"It's a warning."

Inside the box were three items.

A tiny silver baby bracelet engraved with Adrian.

A family photograph showing Robert, Margaret, Adrian... and Nicholas standing together.

Alive.

Smiling.

No hatred between them.

And beneath the photograph...

A sealed letter.

Robert's handwriting.

Adrian opened it carefully.

My son,

If you found this, then your mother kept her promise.

He continued reading.

I hid the truth beneath the only place no one would ever destroy—your childhood.

Tears blurred Adrian's vision.

The letter continued.

The Chairman believes families are weakest when they love one another.

He has spent his life proving it.

I intend to prove him wrong.

At the bottom of the page was a hand-drawn map of the mansion.

One room was circled.

The old chapel.

Robert's final note read:

Everything ends where our family once began.

Before anyone could speak, the manor's lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the nursery.

Emergency generators failed to start.

Then slow, deliberate footsteps echoed from the hallway outside.

One.

Two.

Three.

A calm voice broke the silence.

"Robert always did love dramatic hiding places."

Adrian stepped in front of Elena instinctively.

The nursery door slowly swung open.

An elderly man with silver hair and a polished cane stood in the doorway.

His face was calm.

Almost kind.

Yet his eyes were utterly cold.

He smiled at Adrian.

"Hello."

"It's time we finally met."

Then he spoke the words that made every person in the room freeze.

May you like

"My name is Nicholas DeLuca."
