Chapter 10 – The Confession

Chapter 10 – The Confession
Adrian didn't remember leaving the courthouse.
One moment he was staring at Giovanni DeLuca's altered will.
The next, he was running through the hospital entrance with Detective Laura Hayes close behind.
Doctors.
Nurses.
Security guards.
Everyone moved aside as he rushed toward the intensive care unit.
His heart pounded with only one thought.
Not again.
The neonatal ward was in chaos.
Hospital staff searched every corridor.
Security officers questioned visitors.
The nurse who had called Adrian met him outside Elena's room.
She looked close to tears.
"I'm so sorry."
"Tell me exactly what happened."
She swallowed.
"Two people arrived wearing hospital uniforms."
"They showed transfer paperwork."
"No one questioned them."
"They said Mrs. DeLuca needed specialized neurological observation."
"And you believed them?"
"The paperwork had official hospital seals."
Hayes stepped forward.
"Show me the documents."
The nurse lowered her head.
"They took them."
Security footage was pulled within minutes.
The first camera showed two masked orderlies wheeling Elena's bed down the hallway.
She was still unconscious.
An IV bag hung beside her.
Nothing appeared unusual.
The second camera caught them entering a service elevator.
The third...
Never recorded them leaving.
Hayes frowned.
"That's impossible."
The hospital's head of security looked embarrassed.
"The basement cameras stopped working."
"When?"
"About twelve minutes before the transfer."
Hayes' eyes narrowed.
"They were disabled."
Adrian slammed his fist against the wall.
"They planned everything."
Hayes nodded.
"They knew exactly where every camera was."
A technician hurried into the control room.
"Detective."
"What?"
"I recovered part of the deleted footage."
He connected a flash drive.
The final seconds of video flickered across the screen.
The fake orderlies wheeled Elena toward an ambulance parked behind the hospital.
One of them removed his mask for less than a second.
Adrian froze.
"It's Victor."
"No."
Hayes leaned closer.
"It only looks like him."
The technician enlarged the image.
The man's nose was different.
His jawline slightly wider.
Samuel Reeves whispered from behind them,
"I know him."
Everyone turned.
"Who is he?"
Samuel answered quietly.
"Daniel Mercer."
"Who's Daniel Mercer?"
Samuel looked troubled.
"He used to work for Victor."
"As what?"
"A driver."
"But that wasn't his real job."
Hayes folded her arms.
"What was?"
Samuel met her eyes.
"He made problems disappear."
At that moment another officer rushed into the room.
"We found the ambulance."
"Where?"
"Abandoned beneath the East River Bridge."
Adrian's stomach tightened.
"Was Elena inside?"
The officer shook his head.
"No."
"But someone left something."
The abandoned ambulance sat with its rear doors wide open.
Forensic teams photographed every inch.
Inside, the stretcher remained strapped to the floor.
An IV line still hung from its stand.
But Elena was gone.
Hayes noticed a white envelope resting neatly on the pillow.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Come alone.
Below the words appeared the same black raven symbol found in Elena's office.
Samuel stared at it.
"Nicholas..."
Hayes looked at him sharply.
"Or someone pretending to be Nicholas."
Before anyone could speak, Adrian noticed something beneath the envelope.
A small silver necklace.
He recognized it immediately.
It belonged to Elena.
She never took it off.
Wrapped around the chain was a tiny folded piece of paper.
His hands trembled as he unfolded it.
Only three words.
Warehouse 17. Midnight.
Hayes immediately shook her head.
"It's a trap."
"I know."
"You can't go."
"I have to."
"They'll kill you."
Adrian looked toward the empty stretcher.
"They already tried to kill my wife."
"I'm done waiting."
Despite Hayes' objections, a tactical team quietly surrounded Warehouse 17 before midnight.
Old shipping containers cast long shadows beneath broken floodlights.
The building looked abandoned.
No vehicles.
No movement.
Hayes spoke softly into her radio.
"Hold positions."
"No one moves until I give the order."
Adrian ignored her.
He stepped through the rusted warehouse door alone.
The building was silent.
Dust floated through narrow beams of moonlight.
Rows of abandoned machinery stretched into darkness.
Then a familiar voice echoed across the warehouse.
"I knew you'd come."
Victor Langston stepped into the light.
He was alone.
At least...
He appeared to be.
Adrian's fists clenched.
"Where's Elena?"
Victor smiled.
"Safe."
"If you cooperate."
Adrian took another step.
"If you touch her—"
Victor interrupted.
"You still don't understand."
"This was never about Elena."
"It was always about you."
Adrian stared at him.
"You murdered my father."
Victor sighed.
"I didn't want to."
The words hung in the air.
Adrian almost laughed.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Victor looked strangely tired.
"No."
"I expect you to understand why."
"You poisoned him."
"Yes."
Victor didn't hesitate.
The single word echoed through the warehouse.
Even the officers listening through Adrian's hidden microphone fell silent.
Victor had confessed.
"He found the forged will."
Victor continued calmly.
"He was going to expose everything."
"He would've destroyed the family."
"You destroyed it!"
Adrian shouted.
Victor shook his head.
"No."
"Your grandfather did."
"He forced brothers to compete."
"He taught them power mattered more than blood."
"I simply survived."
"You paid Vanessa."
"Yes."
"You ordered her to push Elena."
Victor closed his eyes briefly.
"I paid her to scare Elena."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"She pushed a pregnant woman down a staircase."
Victor's voice became quieter.
"She wasn't supposed to."
Adrian stepped closer.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
Victor looked toward the dark ceiling.
"Vanessa panicked."
"She believed Elena had enough evidence to destroy us all."
"So she acted."
"You expect me to believe she acted alone?"
Victor didn't answer immediately.
Finally he whispered,
"No."
Adrian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Victor laughed bitterly.
"It means..."
"I'm not the man you've been chasing."
The words stopped Adrian cold.
Before Adrian could react, a weak voice echoed from somewhere inside the warehouse.
"He's telling the truth."
Adrian spun around.
Elena.
She was tied to a chair inside a small office overlooking the warehouse floor.
Bruises covered her wrists, but she was alive.
Adrian rushed toward her.
Hayes' tactical team burst through every entrance at the same moment.
"Police!"
"Don't move!"
Victor raised both hands.
He didn't resist.
As officers handcuffed him, Adrian untied Elena.
She looked exhausted.
But determined.
"I heard everything."
She looked directly at Victor.
"Tell him."
Victor lowered his head.
"I've hidden enough."
Hayes stepped in front of him.
"Then start talking."
Victor took a long breath.
"For twenty-eight years..."
"I believed I was protecting the DeLuca family."
"I forged documents."
"I moved money."
"I killed Robert."
"I ordered the attack on Elena."
He looked at Adrian with genuine regret.
"I'll answer for every one of those crimes."
A pause.
Then he delivered the sentence no one expected.
"But I never forged Giovanni's will."
Silence.
"I found it already altered."
Hayes frowned.
"By who?"
Victor slowly lifted his eyes.
"There was only one person who had access before the probate hearing."
Adrian's heartbeat thundered.
"Who?"
Victor answered in a whisper.
"Margaret."
Adrian stared at him.
"My mother?"
Victor nodded.
"She forged the will."
Elena immediately shook her head.
"No."
Victor looked at her sadly.
"You never asked why Robert searched for Nicholas."
"He wasn't searching for revenge."
"He was searching..."
"...because Margaret confessed."
The warehouse fell silent.
Every officer stopped moving.
Every theory they had built over the past days collapsed in a single moment.
Then Victor smiled bitterly.
"You wanted my confession."
"You have it."
"But now..."
He looked directly at Adrian.
"You'll have to decide whether your mother died a hero..."
May you like
"...or the woman who destroyed your family before I ever did."
