Chapter 1 — The Fall That Wasn’t an Accident

Chapter 1 — The Fall That Wasn’t an Accident

The first thing I felt was the cold.

Not fear.

Not pain.

Cold.

The marble beneath my cheek was so cold that for a few seconds, I couldn't understand why I was lying on the floor.

Then the pain arrived.

It exploded through my lower back and traveled across my abdomen.

My hand instinctively moved toward my stomach.

“Baby…”

The word barely left my lips.

Above me, someone screamed.

“Oh my God!”

Then another voice.

“Call an ambulance!”

And then Vanessa.

“Oh God. Elena!”

Her voice cracked perfectly.

Too perfectly.

I opened my eyes.

Vanessa stood halfway down the staircase.

One hand covered her mouth.

Tears were already running down her cheeks.

But her eyes weren't looking at me.

They were looking at the people gathering behind her.

Watching.

Calculating.

I knew that look.

I had seen it before.

Vanessa wasn't afraid for me.

She was afraid of what everyone else had seen.

I tried to move.

Pain ripped through my body.

I gasped.

Vanessa immediately rushed toward me.

“Don't move her!”

Someone grabbed her arm.

“Wait for the paramedics.”

Vanessa looked horrified.

“I didn't mean to!”

Her voice rose.

“I swear, I didn't mean to!”

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The first lie.

And I knew there would be many more.

Ten minutes earlier, I had been standing in the upstairs hallway.

I remembered everything.

The argument.

The footsteps.

Vanessa's hand on the banister.

Her whisper.

“You really think you're going to take everything from me?”

I had turned around.

“I've never asked for anything that wasn't mine.”

She laughed.

“You married Daniel for the money.”

“No.”

“You married him because you knew he would inherit everything.”

“That's ridiculous.”

Her face changed.

The pleasant expression disappeared.

“You should have left when I warned you.”

I had placed a hand protectively over my stomach.

“I am not leaving my husband.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You're carrying the one thing that can destroy my future.”

I froze.

“What?”

She looked at my stomach.

“The heir.”

My blood went cold.

“What are you talking about?”

She smiled.

Then she pushed me.

Hard.

I remember reaching for the railing.

Missing it.

The world turning.

And then—

marble.

Now I lay beneath the staircase while everyone stared.

Daniel came running from the dining room.

His face was white.

“Elena!”

He dropped beside me.

“Don't move.”

I looked at him.

His hands were shaking.

“Where's the baby?”

“I don't know.”

He looked toward Vanessa.

“What happened?”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“She came at me.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What?”

“She was angry.”

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“She accused me of trying to steal your money.”

“I never—”

I stopped.

Pain seized my abdomen.

Daniel turned toward me.

“Don't talk.”

Vanessa immediately stepped closer.

“She pushed past me. I only moved my hands to protect myself.”

I looked at her.

She met my eyes.

For one brief second, the tears disappeared.

There was only triumph.

Then she turned back toward the family.

“She lost her balance.”

My mother-in-law, Margaret, covered her mouth.

“Oh, Elena…”

Her voice sounded sympathetic.

But she wouldn't look at me.

Daniel's uncle whispered:

“Maybe she really did lose her balance.”

I stared at him.

I had been pushed.

They knew it.

But Vanessa was already building the story.

And the story was simple.

Pregnant wife.

Family argument.

Accidental fall.

No crime.

No villain.

No Vanessa.

Exactly what she needed.

I closed my eyes.

My fingers moved beneath my cardigan.

My phone was still there.

I had kept it on silent.

Before the confrontation, I had activated a recording.

The camera in my brooch had also been running.

Vanessa didn't know.

Neither did anyone else.

My phone had automatically uploaded the audio to a secure server.

The entire conversation.

Including her threat.

Including the push.

Including the words she had whispered just before I fell.

The heir.

I knew then that Vanessa had made one mistake.

She had assumed I was unprepared.

I wasn't.

The ambulance arrived.

Paramedics rushed inside.

“Ma'am, can you tell me your name?”

“Elena Howard.”

“Are you pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“How far along?”

“Twenty-two weeks.”

“Any bleeding?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is the pain?”

“Lower abdomen. Back.”

They carefully placed a cervical collar around my neck.

Daniel followed them.

“I’m her husband.”

The paramedic looked at him.

“Stay back.”

“But—”

“Sir, let us work.”

Daniel stopped.

Vanessa stood behind him.

Her face was pale.

I watched her.

She was frightened now.

Not because of the baby.

Because of the evidence.

Her eyes kept moving toward my cardigan.

Toward my phone.

She knew something.

Maybe not exactly what.

But enough.

As they lifted me onto the stretcher, I caught her gaze.

I smiled.

Very slightly.

Her face changed.

At the hospital, the emergency department became a blur of white lights and rushing footsteps.

Doctors examined me.

Nurses attached monitors.

An ultrasound machine was wheeled beside my bed.

The screen appeared.

A tiny heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Strong.

Alive.

I cried.

The doctor smiled.

“Heartbeat is present.”

Daniel exhaled.

His shoulders collapsed with relief.

I reached for his hand.

He held it.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

“I thought I was going to lose both of you.”

I looked at him.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“Vanessa pushed me.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“I know.”

“You saw her.”

“I saw you fall.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

He looked away.

I understood.

He hadn't seen the push.

Not clearly.

And that was exactly what Vanessa was counting on.

“She says it was an accident,” I whispered.

Daniel didn't answer.

“She says I rushed at her.”

“I know.”

“You believe her?”

He looked at me.

“I don't know what to believe.”

Those words hurt more than the fall.

I turned my face toward the window.

Outside, rain streaked the glass.

My husband was uncertain.

His family was silent.

And Vanessa was probably already planning her next lie.

But there was one thing she didn't know.

The detective was already on his way.

My phone rang.

A nurse picked it up from the bedside table.

“Ms. Howard?”

“Yes?”

“You have a call.”

“Who?”

The nurse looked at the screen.

“Detective Ruiz.”

My heart stopped.

I took the phone.

“Hello?”

“Elena.”

His voice was calm.

“You're awake.”

“Yes.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He paused.

“Did Vanessa push you?”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“I need you to listen carefully.”

I sat still.

“Don't confront her.”

“I won't.”

“Don't tell your husband about the recording.”

I looked toward Daniel.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa has already called an attorney.”

My stomach tightened.

“Already?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Before the ambulance left.”

I stared at the ceiling.

Of course.

She had planned everything.

Ruiz continued.

“She also called someone else.”

“Who?”

“We don't know yet.”

I swallowed.

“Detective…”

“Yes?”

“I have evidence.”

“I know.”

My heart skipped.

“You know?”

“Your phone uploaded the recording.”

I closed my eyes.

“So you have it?”

“We have the audio.”

“And the camera?”

“We're working on that.”

I whispered:

“She's going to lie.”

“I know.”

“She'll say I attacked her.”

“I know.”

“She'll try to make me look unstable.”

Ruiz paused.

“Let her.”

I opened my eyes.

“What?”

“Let her talk.”

His voice became firmer.

“The more she talks, the more evidence she gives us.”

I understood.

“Then what should I do?”

“Nothing.”

He paused.

“Recover.”

“And Vanessa?”

“We'll deal with her.”

The call ended.

I placed the phone beside me.

Daniel looked at me.

“Who was that?”

“Detective Ruiz.”

His expression changed.

“Why did you call the police?”

“I didn't.”

He stared.

“Then who did?”

I looked toward the hallway.

“I did.”

Daniel frowned.

“When?”

“Before I fell.”

He went silent.

Two hours later, Vanessa entered my hospital room.

She had changed clothes.

Her hair was neatly arranged.

Her eyes were red.

She looked like a grieving sister-in-law.

Not an attacker.

She stood beside the bed.

“Can we talk?”

Daniel stood immediately.

“Vanessa.”

“I just want to apologize.”

I stared at her.

“For what?”

She lowered her head.

“For the accident.”

I almost laughed.

“Accident?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“You pushed me.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“I didn't.”

She turned toward Daniel.

“I swear.”

Then she looked at me.

“Elena, you came toward me.”

I said nothing.

She continued.

“You were angry.”

Still nothing.

“You were saying horrible things.”

I watched her carefully.

“What did I say?”

She froze.

“What?”

“You said I was saying horrible things.”

“Yes.”

“What exactly did I say?”

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Daniel noticed.

“What did she say?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“I don't remember exactly.”

I smiled.

“You don't remember.”

She looked uncomfortable.

“It happened so quickly.”

I nodded.

“Of course.”

She moved closer.

“I'm sorry you're hurt.”

Then she leaned toward my ear.

Her voice became barely audible.

“You should have left when I gave you the chance.”

My heart stopped.

She straightened.

The tears returned.

“I'll give you some privacy.”

She walked toward the door.

I watched her leave.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“Did you hear that?”

“Hear what?”

I stared at him.

“She threatened me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

I closed my eyes.

The recording had captured it.

But Daniel hadn't.

Not yet.

At midnight, Detective Ruiz arrived.

He entered my room carrying a tablet.

Daniel was asleep in the chair.

I was awake.

Ruiz sat beside me.

“Your baby is stable.”

I nodded.

“Thank God.”

He placed the tablet on the bed.

“Watch this.”

The screen showed the staircase.

Vanessa stood behind me.

The camera angle was wide.

Perfect.

I watched myself turn.

I watched Vanessa step closer.

Then the audio began.

Her voice.

“You should have left when I warned you.”

My voice.

“I am not leaving my husband.”

Then Vanessa's final words.

“You're carrying the one thing that can destroy my future.”

I looked at Ruiz.

“What does she mean?”

“We don't know yet.”

The footage continued.

Vanessa pushed me.

Hard.

The room became silent.

Daniel woke.

He stared at the screen.

His face went white.

“No.”

Ruiz stopped the video.

Daniel looked at me.

“She pushed you.”

I nodded.

He stood.

“I didn't see it.”

“I know.”

He looked devastated.

“I should have.”

“You can't change that.”

“Yes, I can.”

He turned toward the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To confront her.”

Ruiz stood.

“No.”

Daniel stopped.

“She tried to kill my wife.”

“Then let us handle it.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“She tried to kill my child.”

Ruiz stared at him.

“And now you understand why you must not confront her.”

Daniel looked at me.

I could see something changing in his expression.

The uncertainty was disappearing.

In its place was anger.

But Ruiz wasn't finished.

He opened another file.

“There is more.”

The screen showed Vanessa in the mansion library.

Three days earlier.

She was speaking to someone.

A man.

His face was hidden.

But the voice was clear.

Vanessa said:

“Once Elena is gone, Daniel will sign anything.”

The man answered:

“And the child?”

Vanessa paused.

“Won't survive.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

I stared at the screen.

Ruiz looked at us.

“That conversation happened forty-eight hours before the fall.”

The room became completely silent.

Daniel whispered:

“Who is that man?”

Ruiz didn't answer.

He played the next few seconds.

The man stepped into the light.

His face became visible.

I knew him.

Daniel knew him.

And Vanessa had trusted him.

He was Daniel's father.

Richard Howard.

Daniel stepped backward.

“My father?”

Ruiz nodded.

“We believe Vanessa and Richard have been working together for months.”

Daniel sat down.

His face had lost all color.

“No.”

Ruiz placed another document on the bed.

“There's something else.”

I looked at it.

It was a property transfer.

My name.

Daniel's name.

And Vanessa's.

At the bottom was a clause.

If Elena died before the child was born, Vanessa would receive control of the Howard estate.

I stared at the document.

Then at Daniel.

“She wasn't trying to hurt me.”

Daniel looked at me.

“She was trying to erase me.”

Ruiz corrected me.

“No.”

He pointed at the final page.

“She was trying to erase both of you.”

I placed my hand over my stomach.

The baby moved.

A tiny kick.

I smiled through my tears.

Vanessa had pushed me down those stairs believing she had already won.

She had no idea that the cameras had captured everything.

She didn't know Detective Ruiz had the recording.

She didn't know Daniel had finally seen the truth.

And she certainly didn't know that her own father had been recorded discussing the final stage of their plan.

But there was something none of us understood yet.

Why had Richard agreed to help Vanessa?

What did he stand to gain?

Ruiz closed the file.

“We'll know soon.”

He looked at me.

“Because tomorrow morning, we're going back to the mansion.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

He gave me a grim smile.

“Because Vanessa believes the cameras stopped recording when you fell.”

He tapped the tablet.

“They didn't.”

My heart began pounding.

“What did they capture?”

Ruiz looked at Daniel.

“Everything Vanessa did after she thought Elena was unconscious.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“What did she do?”

Ruiz answered quietly.

“She went into Elena's bedroom.”

“Why?”

“To find something.”

“What?”

Ruiz looked at me.

“Your pregnancy records.”

I froze.

He continued.

“And then she made a phone call.”

“To Richard?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Ruiz turned the tablet around.

The call log appeared.

A single number.

Unknown.

But beneath it was a name the investigators had recovered from an encrypted contact list.

DR. HENRY VALE.

My obstetrician.

The doctor who knew everything about my pregnancy.

The doctor who had performed my ultrasound.

The doctor who knew exactly how far along I was.

And suddenly, I understood.

Vanessa hadn't only planned the fall.

She had planned what came after.

She had planned for my baby to disappear.

I looked at Daniel.

He reached for my hand.

This time, he didn't hesitate.

“I believe you,” he whispered.

I squeezed his fingers.

Outside the hospital room, footsteps approached.

Detective Ruiz looked toward the door.

His hand moved instinctively toward his badge.

The door opened.

A nurse stood there.

Her face was pale.

“Detective?”

“Yes?”

“There is a man downstairs asking for Elena.”

“Who?”

The nurse swallowed.

“He says he's Dr. Vale.”

Ruiz and I exchanged a look.

The doctor stepped into the hallway.

And when he saw me through the open doorway, he stopped.

His face went completely white.

Because he knew something Vanessa didn't.

The fall hadn't killed the plan.

May you like

It had exposed it.

And now the people who had planned to erase my child were finally being forced into the light.
