Chapter 6 — Vanessa’s Second Plan

Chapter 6 — Vanessa’s Second Plan

The chapel doors locked with a metallic click.

Dr. Vale stood in the doorway.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then Ruiz drew his weapon.

“Dr. Vale. Step away from the door.”

The doctor smiled.

“Detective, you're making this unnecessarily dramatic.”

“Hands where I can see them.”

Vale slowly raised both hands.

“I came here to talk.”

Sarah began trembling.

Daniel moved in front of her.

“You've been working for my father.”

Vale's smile faded.

“Your father?”

He laughed softly.

“You still don't understand.”

I held one hand over my stomach.

“What don't we understand?”

Vale looked directly at me.

“Vanessa isn't the person you should be afraid of.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He tilted his head.

“Because Vanessa has already lost.”

Ruiz stepped closer.

“Then why are you here?”

Vale's eyes shifted toward me.

“To make sure she doesn't take you down with her.”

A strange silence followed.

Then Sarah whispered:

“He's lying.”

Vale looked at her.

“You've been hiding for twenty-two years, Sarah. I wouldn't pretend you suddenly became an expert on the truth.”

Sarah's face went white.

Daniel stepped toward him.

“What did you do to my mother?”

Vale shrugged.

“Kept her alive.”

“You imprisoned her.”

“I protected her.”

“From who?”

Vale smiled.

“From Richard.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Richard wanted her dead.”

Sarah whispered:

“No.”

Vale looked at her.

“You know it's true.”

She shook her head.

“You were there.”

“I was.”

“You helped him.”

Vale's expression hardened.

“I helped him once.”

Sarah began crying.

“Once was enough.”

Ruiz ordered the agents to secure the room.

Nobody moved toward Vale.

The tension was unbearable.

I looked at Sarah.

“What happened twenty-two years ago?”

She took a shaky breath.

“I found the first trust.”

“The one in the will?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“The trust existed before that.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The Howard fortune was built around a secret inheritance.”

Sarah glanced toward Daniel.

“Your grandfather created the original trust before Richard married Margaret.”

“And?”

“The trust required a biological heir.”

Daniel looked confused.

“But Richard had me.”

Sarah shook her head.

“You weren't his biological son.”

Daniel went still.

“Who was my father?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I'll tell you.”

She looked at me.

“But first you need to understand Vanessa.”

“What about her?”

“Vanessa knows she's not Richard's daughter.”

I froze.

“She knows?”

“Yes.”

“When did she find out?”

“Three years ago.”

“Who told her?”

Sarah looked at Dr. Vale.

“He did.”

Vale smiled.

“And that's when Vanessa began her second plan.”

The second plan.

I had heard the phrase before.

But no one had explained it.

Now Sarah did.

“Vanessa knew she couldn't inherit the Howard fortune legally.”

“So she forged documents.”

“Yes.”

“And tried to eliminate me.”

“Yes.”

“But that was only the first plan.”

Sarah nodded.

“The second plan was more dangerous.”

“What was it?”

Sarah looked at my stomach.

“She wanted your baby.”

I felt sick.

“Why?”

“Because the trust can be controlled through the first biological heir.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Controlled how?”

Sarah answered:

“If the heir is born under Vanessa's guardianship, she can control the estate until the child reaches adulthood.”

I shook my head.

“But I'm the mother.”

“Not if you're dead.”

Silence.

I understood.

Vanessa didn't need to kill the baby.

She needed to kill me.

Then claim guardianship.

The plan was horrifyingly simple.

She would become the child's legal guardian.

She would control the Howard fortune.

And she would make everyone believe she had become responsible for a grieving family.

I whispered:

“She was going to raise my child.”

Sarah nodded.

“She wanted to.”

I felt my stomach turn.

“Why?”

Sarah looked at me.

“Because Vanessa doesn't want money.”

“Then what does she want?”

“Power.”

Vale finally lowered his hands.

“Enough.”

Ruiz raised his weapon.

“Don't move.”

Vale smiled.

“You're looking in the wrong direction.”

He pointed toward Daniel.

“Ask him where he was the night Vanessa first planned the fall.”

I turned toward my husband.

Daniel's face changed.

“What?”

I stared at him.

“Where were you?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know what he's talking about.”

Vale laughed.

“Of course you don't.”

He reached into his coat.

Ruiz immediately shouted:

“Don't!”

Vale stopped.

Then slowly removed a phone.

He placed it on the floor.

“Play the last recording.”

Ruiz approached carefully.

He picked up the phone.

A recording began.

Daniel's voice.

“I can't let her do this.”

Vanessa's voice answered.

“You don't have a choice.”

Daniel:

“She'll die.”

Vanessa:

“That depends on how hard she falls.”

My heart stopped.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“No.”

The recording continued.

Daniel:

“What happens to the baby?”

Vanessa:

“If Elena dies, the baby belongs to the family.”

Daniel:

“And if she survives?”

Vanessa:

“Then we try again.”

The recording ended.

I stared at Daniel.

“You knew.”

He looked at me.

“I knew she was planning something.”

“When?”

“Two weeks before the fall.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was trying to stop her.”

“You let her push me.”

“I didn't know when she would do it.”

“You knew.”

His voice broke.

“I knew she was planning to hurt you.”

I stepped backward.

“You chose silence.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I could control her.”

“You couldn't.”

“No.”

He looked devastated.

“I couldn't.”

Vanessa's second plan had already begun.

Ruiz found the evidence in the chapel ledger.

A guardianship agreement.

Already signed.

Already notarized.

The document named Vanessa as temporary guardian of my unborn child.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Forged.

Again.

I stared at it.

“She prepared this before the fall.”

Ruiz nodded.

“Months ago.”

Sarah whispered:

“She needed Elena to die without a legal dispute.”

“And the family?”

“They would testify that Elena had become unstable.”

I looked at Daniel.

He couldn't meet my eyes.

“Who would testify?”

Sarah answered.

“Margaret.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?”

“Richard.”

“Anyone else?”

Sarah hesitated.

Then:

“Dr. Vale.”

I looked at the doctor.

He smiled.

“I never said I was proud of it.”

I felt anger rise.

“You were my doctor.”

“Yes.”

“You monitored my pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

“You gave Vanessa information.”

“Yes.”

“You helped her plan my death.”

Vale's expression remained calm.

“I helped them understand the legal consequences.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the only answer you'll get.”

Ruiz stepped forward.

“You're under arrest.”

Vale laughed.

“For what?”

“Conspiracy.”

“Where's your warrant?”

“I don't need one.”

Vale's smile disappeared.

Then he said something that stopped everyone.

“You won't arrest me.”

Ruiz frowned.

“Why?”

“Because your superior already signed an order.”

“What order?”

Vale reached into his pocket.

A folded document.

He handed it to Ruiz.

Ruiz read it.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”

I asked.

He didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Detective?”

Ruiz looked at him.

“It's an emergency medical custody order.”

“For Elena?”

Ruiz nodded.

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

“It authorizes Dr. Vale to take control of your medical care if you're deemed mentally unstable.”

My stomach dropped.

“And who signed it?”

Ruiz looked at the document.

“Judge Aaron Bell.”

Sarah whispered:

“Richard's friend.”

I stared at Vale.

“So if something happens to me…”

“You're under my care.”

“And if I die?”

Vale didn't answer.

I understood.

Then the chapel lights went out.

Again.

This time, Ruiz was ready.

He shouted:

“Everyone down!”

A flash came from the side entrance.

A gunshot.

The bullet struck the stone wall.

Another shot.

One of the agents fired back.

Chaos exploded.

Daniel grabbed me.

“Down!”

I dropped behind the pew.

Sarah screamed.

Ruiz shouted orders.

Then I heard footsteps.

Someone ran toward the rear door.

Vanessa.

I recognized her voice.

“Go!”

I looked up.

She was there.

Standing beside the open side entrance.

She looked directly at me.

For one second, our eyes met.

Then she smiled.

Not afraid.

Not surprised.

Certain.

“Goodbye, Elena.”

She disappeared into the darkness.

Daniel started after her.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“She can't get away.”

“That's what she wants.”

He stopped.

“What?”

I looked at the chapel floor.

The guardianship document was gone.

Vanessa had never come for Vale.

She had come for the document.

And she had gotten it.

An hour later, the chapel was surrounded by police.

Vale had disappeared during the chaos.

Vanessa was gone.

Sarah was taken to the hospital.

Daniel sat beside me in the ambulance.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said:

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“I know.”

“I made everything worse.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

His face fell.

I touched his hand.

“Not yet.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

“Not yet.”

I squeezed his fingers.

“Because if we're going to survive this, you don't get to protect me with silence anymore.”

He nodded.

“I won't.”

The next morning, Detective Ruiz came to my hospital room.

He looked exhausted.

“Vanessa is gone.”

“I expected that.”

“We found her car.”

“Where?”

“Near the harbor.”

I frowned.

“She's leaving the country?”

“Probably.”

“Where?”

“We don't know.”

He placed a photograph on the table.

A yacht.

Luxury.

White.

Docked offshore.

I stared.

“Is that hers?”

“No.”

“Then whose?”

Ruiz looked at me.

“Richard Howard's.”

My stomach tightened.

“Is he on it?”

“We don't know.”

“What about Vanessa?”

“No sign.”

Then Ruiz showed me another photograph.

Vanessa at the harbor.

She was carrying a suitcase.

Beside her was someone else.

A man.

I looked closer.

My blood froze.

Daniel stared.

“No.”

I whispered:

“Who is that?”

Daniel's voice cracked.

“My father.”

Richard.

Alive.

Standing beside Vanessa.

And between them was a baby carrier.

Empty.

I looked at Ruiz.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

Because my phone vibrated.

One message.

Unknown number.

YOU HAVE TWELVE HOURS.

Another appeared.

BRING THE WILL.

Then a third.

OR VANESSA WILL TAKE WHAT SHE CAME FOR.

I looked down at my stomach.

The baby moved.

Daniel saw it.

His face hardened.

“They're coming for you.”

I nodded.

“No.”

I looked toward the window.

“They're coming for our child.”

And somewhere beyond the city, Vanessa and Richard were already moving toward their final destination.

The second plan had failed to kill me.

So they had changed the rules.

Now they weren't trying to eliminate the mother.

They were trying to steal the heir.

May you like

And this time, I wasn't going to wait for them to come to me.

I was going after them first.
