Chapter 3 — The Woman Vanessa Wanted Dead

Chapter 3 — The Woman Vanessa Wanted Dead
Daniel didn't touch me.
He stood three feet away, staring at the paper as if the name printed on it belonged to someone else.
“Elena…”
I held up my hand.
“Don't.”
His face tightened.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand exactly what I'm looking at.”
“No. You don't.”
I looked down at the note again.
THE PERSON WHO BETRAYED VANESSA IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.
Then his name.
DANIEL HOWARD.
My husband.
The man whose child I carried.
The man who had held my hand in the emergency room.
The man who had told me he believed me.
And now his name was sitting inside a secret compartment hidden behind a family portrait.
I took a step backward.
“Were you involved?”
Daniel's eyes filled with something that looked like pain.
“No.”
“Then why is your name here?”
“I don't know.”
“That's not good enough.”
“I swear to you.”
Ruiz stepped between us.
“Both of you, stop.”
I looked at him.
“Detective, you told me not to trust you.”
His expression changed.
“I know.”
“You heard the call?”
“I heard enough.”
“And you still expect me to believe you?”
“No.”
That answer surprised me.
Ruiz looked at the hidden compartment.
“I expect you to question everything.”
He reached for the envelope.
I stopped him.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I want to open it.”
“You already did.”
“No.”
I held the paper tightly.
“I want to know why Daniel's name was hidden behind the portrait.”
Ruiz nodded.
“Then we'll find out.”
Daniel remained silent.
Finally, he whispered:
“I didn't betray Vanessa.”
I looked at him.
“What did you betray?”
He lowered his eyes.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Daniel.”
He swallowed.
“I betrayed my father.”
The room went silent.
He told me the truth in the library.
Not everything.
Not yet.
But enough to make me understand that the man I had married was not the man I thought I knew.
Three months earlier, Daniel had discovered irregular transfers from the Howard family trust.
Millions of dollars.
Money had been moved through shell companies.
Property had been purchased under false names.
Several accounts were connected to Vanessa.
But the person authorizing the transfers was Richard.
Daniel confronted him.
His father didn't deny it.
Instead, he told Daniel something terrifying.
“You don't know what your family owns.”
Daniel had asked him what that meant.
Richard had refused to answer.
Then he gave Daniel a choice.
Join him.
Or lose everything.
Daniel chose neither.
He secretly contacted a federal investigator.
He began collecting evidence.
He never told me.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I thought I could protect you.”
“You nearly got me killed.”
His eyes closed.
“I know.”
“You knew Vanessa was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my pregnancy made me a target.”
“I didn't know how far she'd go.”
I laughed bitterly.
“She pushed me down a staircase.”
“I know.”
“And you still thought keeping me in the dark was protecting me?”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I was wrong.”
I looked away.
For years, I had believed marriage meant sharing everything.
Now I understood that sometimes the most dangerous secrets were the ones people kept because they thought they were protecting you.
Ruiz placed a folder on the table.
“There is something you need to know.”
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman stood outside a courthouse.
Late forties.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
A thin scar across her left cheek.
I didn't recognize her.
“Who is she?”
“Her name is Claire Mercer.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“She's alive?”
Ruiz nodded.
“Barely.”
I frowned.
“What does she have to do with Vanessa?”
“Everything.”
Claire had once worked for the Howard family.
Not as an employee.
As their chief financial auditor.
She had discovered the missing money.
She had discovered the shell companies.
She had discovered the fake property transfers.
And she had discovered something worse.
The Howard family had been using unborn heirs to secure loans against future inheritance.
My baby was not merely an heir.
My baby was an asset.
A financial guarantee.
A living condition inside a series of contracts.
I felt sick.
“They used my child as collateral?”
Ruiz nodded.
“That's why Vanessa wanted your pregnancy ended.”
Daniel stood.
“My father knew?”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
I stared at the photograph.
“What happened to Claire?”
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
I looked at the date.
It was shortly after I had announced my pregnancy.
“Vanessa?”
“We believe she arranged it.”
“Believe?”
Ruiz looked at me.
“We found Claire yesterday.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“In a private rehabilitation facility outside Boston.”
We drove there that afternoon.
The facility sat behind tall iron gates surrounded by pine trees.
Claire was in a private room.
When we entered, she was sitting beside a window.
She looked fragile.
But her eyes were sharp.
She looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
“You're Elena.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
She smiled sadly.
“I've been waiting for you.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why?”
“Because I knew eventually they'd come for you.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?”
Claire looked at him.
“Your family.”
Daniel swallowed.
“What did they do to you?”
She touched the scar on her cheek.
“They tried to make me forget.”
“How?”
“Drugs.”
I stared.
“Who?”
“Richard.”
She paused.
“And Vanessa.”
I sat beside her.
“Tell me everything.”
Claire looked at my stomach.
“They were terrified of your child.”
“Why?”
“Because your baby changes the ownership structure of the Howard estate.”
“I don't understand.”
“Your father-in-law created a succession trust.”
She opened a folder.
“Your child's birth activates it.”
I looked at Daniel.
He was pale.
“What happens?”
Claire answered:
“Richard loses control.”
Silence.
“And Vanessa?”
“She gets nothing.”
I understood.
Vanessa wasn't simply jealous.
She was fighting for survival.
If my child was born, her entire plan collapsed.
Claire continued.
“That's why they needed you to disappear before the birth.”
My hand instinctively covered my stomach.
“Why me?”
Claire looked directly into my eyes.
“Because they couldn't legally remove your child.”
She paused.
“So they decided to remove the mother.”
Claire gave us copies of the documents.
The first was a trust agreement.
The second was a series of financial contracts.
The third was a private agreement signed by Richard.
But the fourth document made me freeze.
It contained my signature.
I stared at it.
“I never signed this.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
The signature looked perfect.
But there was one difference.
My middle initial was wrong.
I always used E. M. Howard.
The document used E. N. Howard.
A tiny mistake.
One that might save my life.
“Forgery,” Ruiz said.
Claire nodded.
“Exactly.”
“Who forged it?”
She looked at Daniel.
“Your sister.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Claire reached into her folder.
“Then explain this.”
She pulled out a photograph.
Vanessa was sitting at a desk.
Holding a pen.
Beside her was a page containing my signature.
Daniel stared.
“She learned to copy it.”
I whispered:
“How long?”
Claire answered:
“Almost two years.”
Two years.
Vanessa had been preparing long before my pregnancy.
Long before the fall.
Long before I understood there was a war inside the Howard family.
I looked at Claire.
“What was she planning to do with the forged documents?”
“Sell the estate.”
“To whom?”
Claire's expression changed.
“That is where things become dangerous.”
She pulled out another document.
A corporation.
Mercer Holdings.
My blood went cold.
“Is that your company?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“Then whose?”
She looked at Ruiz.
He answered.
“An offshore entity connected to organized financial fraud.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Who owns it?”
Ruiz didn't respond.
Claire whispered:
“Someone inside the Howard family.”
I felt the room become smaller.
“Who?”
She looked at Daniel.
“Your mother.”
Daniel's face collapsed.
“My mother?”
Claire nodded.
“Margaret.”
When we returned to the mansion, Margaret was waiting.
She stood in the foyer.
Calm.
Elegant.
Perfectly dressed.
As though nothing had happened.
She looked at me.
“You should be resting.”
I stared at her.
“Did you know?”
Her expression remained unchanged.
“Know what?”
“That Vanessa planned to kill me.”
She went completely still.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Who told you?”
Not denial.
Not shock.
A question.
That was all I needed.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mom.”
She looked at him.
“Tell us the truth.”
Margaret sighed.
“You have no idea what you're asking.”
“I know exactly what I'm asking.”
“You don't understand your father.”
“I understand him enough.”
Margaret looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
“You should never have gotten pregnant.”
My heart stopped.
Daniel stepped backward.
“Mom.”
She closed her eyes.
“I didn't mean—”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Vanessa was planning to hurt Elena.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you stop her?”
Margaret's face hardened.
“Because Vanessa wasn't the worst thing in this family.”
I stared.
“Who is?”
She looked toward the staircase.
“Richard.”
Daniel whispered:
“He's dead to us.”
Margaret laughed.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Richard has been playing both sides.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret stepped closer.
“He wanted Vanessa to believe he was helping her.”
She paused.
“He wanted Daniel to believe he was helping him.”
Then she looked directly at me.
“And he wanted you to believe he wanted you dead.”
I felt a chill.
“Why?”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“Because the real target was never you.”
She looked at my stomach.
“It was the baby.”
Before anyone could speak, the front door slammed open.
Detective Ruiz entered.
His expression was grim.
“Everyone stay where you are.”
Two federal agents followed him.
Margaret turned pale.
Ruiz held up a warrant.
“We have reason to believe Richard Howard is preparing to leave the country.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Where?”
“Unknown.”
Ruiz turned to me.
“But that's not why I'm here.”
“What happened?”
He handed me a photograph.
My breath stopped.
It showed a hospital room.
A woman lying unconscious in a bed.
Claire.
But Claire was standing beside us.
I looked at the photograph again.
Then at Claire's face.
The woman in the photograph was not Claire.
She was someone else.
Someone with the same scar.
The same dark hair.
The same gray eyes.
Ruiz whispered:
“The woman you met today isn't Claire Mercer.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Then who is she?”
Ruiz looked toward the woman sitting by the window.
She slowly stood.
Her expression changed.
The softness disappeared.
She smiled.
“Very good, Detective.”
Daniel reached for me.
Ruiz drew his weapon.
The woman stepped backward.
“I wondered how long it would take.”
I stared at her.
“Who are you?”
She laughed.
Then she removed the small scar from her cheek.
It peeled away.
A disguise.
My blood froze.
The woman beneath it was someone I knew.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had attended my wedding.
Someone who had held my hand when I told her I was pregnant.
Vanessa's closest friend.
Rebecca.
She smiled.
“You were never supposed to survive the fall.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
Rebecca's smile disappeared.
“Because Vanessa promised me half the estate.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“And Richard?”
“He promised me something better.”
“What?”
Rebecca looked at my stomach.
“The child.”
I felt the baby move.
She smiled.
“Because the baby isn't just an heir.”
She paused.
“The baby is the key.”
“To what?”
Rebecca looked toward the portrait.
“The Howard family has been hiding something behind that wall for generations.”
Ruiz raised his weapon.
“Rebecca, step away.”
She laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
She reached into her coat.
Everyone shouted.
But she didn't pull a gun.
She pulled out a photograph.
She threw it onto the floor.
I picked it up.
It showed a newborn baby.
A hospital bracelet was wrapped around its tiny wrist.
The name was visible.
HOWARD.
But beneath the name was another word.
SECOND.
I looked at Daniel.
He stared at the photograph in horror.
“That's impossible.”
Rebecca whispered:
“Your family has been hiding the first heir for twenty-eight years.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Who?”
She looked directly at me.
Then she smiled.
“Vanessa.”
Silence filled the room.
Vanessa wasn't merely Daniel's sister.
She wasn't merely a woman trying to steal an inheritance.
She had been raised under a lie.
And now I understood why she was willing to kill me.
She believed my unborn child had stolen something that had belonged to her.
But Rebecca wasn't finished.
She leaned closer.
“There's one thing Vanessa never knew.”
“What?”
Rebecca's eyes shifted toward my stomach.
“The child you're carrying isn't just the next heir.”
She paused.
“It's the child that will expose why Vanessa was never supposed to inherit anything.”
I looked at Ruiz.
He looked equally stunned.
Then the mansion lights suddenly went out.
A gunshot echoed from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Another shot.
Then a third.
Rebecca screamed.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
Ruiz shouted:
“Get down!”
I dropped behind the sofa.
The portrait above the staircase shattered.
Glass rained across the marble floor.
And behind it, for the first time, we saw what the Howard family had hidden for generations.
A steel door.
With a single inscription.
FIRST HEIR.
The baby moved beneath my hand.
And I realized the fall had never been the beginning of Vanessa's plan.
It had been the beginning of mine.
May you like
Because now the entire family was trapped inside the truth.
And someone was willing to kill to make sure none of us ever opened that door.
