Chapter 12 — The Woman Behind Vanessa

Chapter 12 — The Woman Behind Vanessa

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The photograph remained in my hands.

Three children.

Three heirs.

Three lives Richard had spent decades controlling.

Daniel stood beside me, staring at the little girl between himself and Lucas.

Vanessa was still sitting beneath the altar.

She looked at the photograph once.

Then she closed her eyes.

“No,” she whispered.

I turned toward her.

“You knew.”

She shook her head.

“I suspected.”

“You knew she was your sister?”

“No.”

“Then why did Richard hide you?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because I wasn't supposed to exist.”

Her voice was barely audible.

I walked closer.

“Who was your mother?”

Vanessa's face went pale.

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“Richard never told me.”

“But your grandmother knew.”

Vanessa nodded.

“She told me once.”

“What did she say?”

“That my mother loved me.”

I waited.

“Then she said something else.”

“What?”

Vanessa looked at the photograph again.

“She said my mother was the only woman Richard had ever truly feared.”

A chill moved through me.

“Why?”

“Because she knew what he had done.”

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“Who is the woman?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“She was called Claire.”

Michael suddenly stepped forward.

“Claire?”

Vanessa nodded.

“You know her?”

Michael's face had gone completely white.

“Yes.”

I turned toward him.

“Who was Claire?”

He stared at the photograph.

“Claire Morgan.”

My heart sank.

“Who?”

Michael swallowed.

“Your grandfather's attorney.”

Silence.

“The woman who handled the original trust?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“She was my mother.”

Michael nodded slowly.

“And she was supposed to marry Richard.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“That's what he told me.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“They were never engaged.”

“Then why did Richard say they were?”

“Because he needed people to believe Claire belonged to him.”

Michael looked at me.

“She didn't.”

“Who did she belong to?”

“No one.”

He paused.

“Claire belonged to herself.”

The words sounded simple.

But something about them frightened me.

“Where is she?”

Michael didn't answer.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said she was alive.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I said my grandmother told me she loved me.”

“That's not an answer.”

“She died.”

“When?”

“Twenty-eight years ago.”

“How?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Richard told me she died in a car accident.”

Michael whispered:

“She didn't.”

Everyone turned toward him.

He continued.

“Claire disappeared.”

“When?”

“The night the first trust was signed.”

I felt a cold sensation in my chest.

“What happened?”

Michael looked at my mother.

“She knew Richard was planning to take control.”

“Control of what?”

“The trust.”

“Then why didn't she stop him?”

“She tried.”

“What happened?”

Michael's voice dropped.

“She vanished.”

Ruiz stepped forward.

“Vanessa, where did you get this photograph?”

“My grandmother.”

“Where did she get it?”

“I don't know.”

“Was she with Claire when the photograph was taken?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three days after I was born.”

Ruiz examined the picture.

“Then Claire was alive after Vanessa's birth.”

Vanessa nodded.

“That means Richard lied.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the little girl.

“How old was she when Claire disappeared?”

“Three.”

“And you were raised by Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa stared at me.

“Because he told everyone I was his daughter.”

“But you weren't.”

“No.”

“Who was your father?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Michael looked toward the door.

“Maybe you do.”

“What?”

He pointed to the photograph.

“Look at Claire's necklace.”

I leaned closer.

A small silver pendant hung around her neck.

An oval surrounded by three tiny stars.

I recognized it.

My grandmother had worn the same pendant.

I looked at Vanessa.

“That's not a coincidence.”

“No.”

She touched the photograph.

“My grandmother gave it to me.”

“Why?”

“She told me it belonged to my mother.”

Michael stepped closer.

“That necklace belonged to the Morgan family.”

I frowned.

“Then why did my grandmother have one?”

Michael looked at me.

“Because Claire and your grandmother were sisters.”

I felt the room disappear.

“What?”

“Half-sisters.”

I stared at him.

“Then Vanessa is…”

“Your cousin.”

Vanessa laughed.

A broken, exhausted laugh.

“So we're all related.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Apparently.”

I couldn't even process it.

The family tree that had once seemed complicated now looked deliberately designed to trap everyone inside it.

Richard had known.

My grandfather had known.

My mother had known.

And Vanessa had spent her entire life believing she was an outsider.

When she had actually been one of us.

Ruiz's radio crackled.

He answered.

“What?”

His face changed.

“Repeat.”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“The old estate has been breached.”

“By whom?”

“We don't know.”

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Vanessa?”

She shook her head.

“I've been here.”

Ruiz continued listening.

Then his eyes narrowed.

“There's a woman.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“Claire.”

Nobody spoke.

Ruiz's radio crackled again.

“She is alive.”

Vanessa stood so quickly the chair fell behind her.

“No.”

Ruiz nodded.

“The officers found a woman matching her description.”

“Where?”

“The underground archive.”

Michael stared.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because the archive was sealed twenty years ago.”

Ruiz looked at me.

“Apparently someone opened it.”

We drove through the snow without stopping.

Vanessa sat beside me.

For the first time, she wasn't acting like an enemy.

She looked terrified.

“What if it's not her?”

“Then we'll know.”

“What if it is?”

“Then you finally get answers.”

Vanessa looked out the window.

“What if I don't want them?”

I turned toward her.

“You've spent your whole life being lied to.”

She didn't answer.

“You deserve the truth.”

She whispered:

“Even if it destroys me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I've learned that lies don't protect people.”

I paused.

“They only delay the pain.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“I'm sorry.”

I knew what she meant.

The staircase.

The fall.

The gun.

The threats.

Everything.

I wasn't ready to forgive her.

But I wasn't ready to hate her either.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

“I will.”

The underground archive was beneath the east wing.

The entrance had been hidden behind a stone fireplace.

Two officers stood outside.

One was injured.

The other had blood on his uniform.

Ruiz immediately drew his weapon.

“What happened?”

The officer pointed toward the tunnel.

“She was inside.”

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“She went deeper.”

Michael looked at the darkness.

“She knows these tunnels.”

“Why?”

“Because she designed them.”

I stared at him.

“My grandfather's archive.”

Michael nodded.

“Claire built the security system.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Then she knows everything.”

Michael looked at her.

“Probably.”

“Then let's find her.”

The tunnel was narrow.

Cold air moved through the walls.

Our footsteps echoed.

Then we saw the first room.

Empty.

The second contained shelves.

The third contained boxes.

Thousands of them.

Each marked with a year.

And finally:

1999 — SUCCESSION

I stopped.

“That's the year Vanessa was born.”

Michael nodded.

We opened the box.

Inside were hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Photographs.

Legal documents.

And one envelope.

It was addressed:

TO THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO KNOW.

Vanessa reached for it.

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

She read silently.

Then tears began running down her face.

“What does it say?”

She handed it to me.

I read.

Vanessa,

If Richard tells you that your mother abandoned you, he is lying.

If he tells you she died, he is lying.

If he tells you that you are his daughter, he is lying.

Your mother gave you to him because she believed he would keep you alive.

My eyes moved to the next line.

She was wrong.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I continued.

Your father is not Richard Howard.

Your father is the man Richard has spent twenty years trying to erase from history.

The next page had only one name.

I stopped breathing.

Samuel Morgan.

Vanessa stared at me.

“Who is Samuel Morgan?”

Michael whispered:

“Claire's husband.”

I looked at him.

“Then why did Richard say he was dead?”

Michael shook his head.

“He was.”

“When?”

“Twenty-eight years ago.”

“Before Vanessa was born?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the letter again.

Something didn't make sense.

“Then how could he be her father?”

Michael's face changed.

“He wasn't.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Samuel Morgan was Claire's husband.”

He pointed to the date.

“But he died before Vanessa was born.”

“So who was her father?”

Michael stared at the final page.

There was another name.

One I recognized.

One that made my stomach turn.

Thomas Howard.

My grandfather.

Vanessa collapsed into the chair.

“No.”

I stared at the paper.

My grandfather.

Her biological father.

That meant Vanessa wasn't my cousin.

She was my aunt.

My grandfather's daughter.

The missing heir.

The third child in the photograph.

Daniel stared at me.

“Then Vanessa is…”

“My grandfather's daughter.”

Michael nodded.

“And your mother's half-sister.”

Vanessa began crying.

“Why did he hide me?”

Michael answered softly.

“Because Richard threatened to expose the affair.”

“That doesn't explain everything.”

“No.”

He looked at the records.

“There's more.”

He opened another file.

Inside was a legal agreement.

My grandfather had signed it.

So had Claire.

The document stated:

The child shall remain outside the Howard bloodline until the succession event.

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Michael read the next line.

“If the child is ever identified as a Howard heir, all competing claims shall be invalidated.”

Vanessa looked up.

“So I was the final heir.”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

“Because your grandfather didn't trust Richard.”

Michael turned another page.

“He created the trust around you.”

I stared.

“The first trust.”

“Yes.”

“And then he created another one for me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Michael looked at me.

“Because he wanted to protect both daughters.”

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“He knew about me.”

“Yes.”

“He loved me?”

Michael nodded.

“He tried.”

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

“He never came.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard threatened Claire.”

“Where was she?”

Michael didn't answer.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Right here.”

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped into the light.

She was old.

Thin.

Her gray hair was tied behind her neck.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Vanessa froze.

“Mom?”

Claire looked at her daughter.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Claire whispered:

“Vanessa.”

Vanessa ran.

They collided in the middle of the archive.

Claire held her as though she were still a three-year-old child.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You left me.”

“No.”

“You left me.”

“I was taken.”

“By Richard?”

Claire shook her head.

“By your grandfather.”

Vanessa pulled away.

“What?”

Claire looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Michael.

“He didn't abandon you.”

She took a breath.

“He hid you.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard was going to kill you.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“And my father?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Your father was Thomas.”

I felt my heart stop.

“My grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“Why did he never tell me?”

“Because he believed the only way to protect the trust was to erase you from the family.”

Vanessa whispered:

“He erased his own daughter.”

Claire nodded.

“And I helped him.”

The room was silent.

I stepped toward Claire.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

She looked at me.

“Because you were next.”

“Next for what?”

“To be sacrificed.”

I frowned.

She continued.

“Your grandfather knew Richard would eventually come after you.”

“So he created the trust.”

“Yes.”

“He knew Richard would target my child.”

“Yes.”

“And he knew Vanessa would be used.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't anyone stop him?”

Claire looked exhausted.

“Because your grandfather believed he could control the monster he created.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“He was wrong.”

Claire nodded.

“Very wrong.”

Then she reached inside her coat.

She removed a small envelope.

“This is why I came back.”

I took it.

“What is it?”

“The final document.”

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

A succession declaration.

But there was something strange.

It listed three heirs.

Elena Howard.

Daniel Howard.

Vanessa Morgan Howard.

And beneath them:

The child yet unborn.

I looked at Claire.

“What does this mean?”

She whispered:

“It means the trust was never supposed to belong to one person.”

“Then who?”

“All four.”

Michael stepped forward.

“And if one heir dies?”

Claire looked at him.

“The remaining heirs inherit.”

I felt cold.

“That's why Richard wanted Vanessa dead.”

“Yes.”

“And Lucas.”

“Yes.”

“And my baby.”

“Yes.”

“And me.”

Claire nodded.

“Every death strengthens the remaining claim.”

I finally understood.

Richard wasn't trying to steal the trust.

He was eliminating competitors.

One by one.

Until only he remained as guardian.

But there was one thing he hadn't calculated.

The heirs had found one another.

A gunshot exploded through the archive.

Claire screamed.

The lights went out.

Daniel grabbed me.

Ruiz shouted:

“DOWN!”

Another shot.

Glass shattered.

Vanessa pulled Claire behind a cabinet.

Michael returned fire.

Someone ran through the tunnel.

Ruiz shouted:

“Don't move!”

The emergency lights came on.

I looked around.

Everyone was alive.

Except one.

A man lay near the entrance.

Not Richard.

Not Vale.

A stranger.

He had been shot by his own accomplice.

Ruiz searched his pockets.

He found a phone.

The last outgoing message was still on the screen.

THE FOUR HEIRS ARE TOGETHER.

Below it:

BEGIN PHASE TWO.

I stared.

“Phase two?”

Ruiz looked at me.

“Yes.”

“What's phase two?”

He turned the phone over.

A photograph appeared.

My house.

My bedroom.

My baby monitor.

And a timestamp.

LIVE.

My blood froze.

Someone was inside my home.

Someone was watching my unborn child.

And then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

YOU FOUND THE WOMAN BEHIND VANESSA.

Another message followed.

NOW FIND THE MAN BEHIND RICHARD.

Then:

HE IS ALREADY WITH YOU.

I slowly looked around the archive.

Michael.

Ruiz.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Claire.

Everyone stared back at me.

Then I noticed something.

Ruiz's hand was inside his coat.

Not near his radio.

Not near his badge.

Near a second phone.

A phone none of us had seen before.

He looked at me.

And smiled.

For the first time since I had met him, Detective Ruiz didn't look surprised.

He looked relieved.

“You finally noticed,” he said.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Ruiz?”

The detective slowly removed the phone.

On its screen was one name.

RICHARD.

And beneath it was a message sent only seconds earlier.

THEY KNOW ABOUT CLAIRE.

I stared at him.

“You've been working for Richard.”

Ruiz's expression didn't change.

“No.”

He turned the phone toward me.

The next message appeared.

KILL THE FOUR HEIRS BEFORE DAWN.

Ruiz looked at me.

Then he whispered:

“That's exactly what I wanted you to see.”

He dropped the phone.

And suddenly I understood.

Ruiz hadn't betrayed us.

He had been undercover.

But if that was true, there was only one question left.

May you like

Who had Richard trusted enough to order the deaths of every heir?

And why did Ruiz look more frightened of the answer than any of us?
