Chapter 1 â The Camera Never Lied

Chapter 1 â The Camera Never Lied
The sound of shattering glass echoed through the executive office.
For one endless second, nobody moved.
The computer monitor that Evelyn had lifted with both hands crashed onto the polished hardwood floor instead of Chloe's head. Sparks burst from the broken screen before it went dark, filling the room with the bitter smell of burned plastic.
Evelyn stared at the shattered monitor, breathing heavily.
"You..." she whispered. "What did you just do?"
Chloe slowly lowered the small wireless remote in her hand.
She wasn't smiling.
She wasn't trembling anymore.
She simply looked at Evelyn with a calmness that felt almost frightening.
"I pressed the backup button."
The words landed like stones.
Evelyn's face drained of color.
"No..."
"The footage has already been uploaded."
"You liar."
"I'm not."
Chloe nodded toward the ceiling.
"The camera has been recording this office for months."
Evelyn instinctively looked up.
Hidden inside the smoke detector, barely visible against the white ceiling, a tiny green light blinked quietly.
Still recording.
Still watching.
Still remembering.
"You threatened me."
Chloe's voice remained steady.
"You demanded that I sign fraudulent transfer papers."
"You tried to assault me."
"And you admitted why you wanted my signature."
Evelyn's breathing became uneven.
"No."
"No, no..."
She grabbed another heavy object from the desk and hurled it toward the ceiling.
The decorative glass vase exploded against the wall.
The camera remained untouched.
Its tiny green light continued blinking.
One.
Two.
Three.
Recording everything.
Evelyn's hands began to shake.
"You think a camera will save you?"
Before Chloe could answer, the office door burst open.
Richard Anderson rushed inside.
His tailored navy suit was slightly wrinkled from running through the building.
Behind him came his mother, Victoria Anderson, followed by two attorneys and several senior executives.
"What happened?"
Richard's eyes immediately found Evelyn.
She was standing beside the shattered monitor.
Tears instantly flooded her eyes.
"Richard..."
Her voice cracked perfectly.
"I tried to stop her."
She pointed at Chloe.
"She became violent."
Richard looked at Chloe.
Her cheek was red.
A thin line of blood ran down her wrist where broken glass had cut her.
But Evelyn was crying.
And for years, Richard had always believed the person who cried first.
"What happened?"
he asked again.
Evelyn sobbed harder.
"I only asked her to sign the divorce agreement."
"She refused."
"Then she threatened me."
"She said she'd destroy this family."
Victoria gasped dramatically.
"I knew she was unstable."
One attorney stepped forward.
"Mrs. Anderson, is this true?"
Chloe looked at every face inside the room.
Not one of them asked why the monitor was broken.
Not one of them noticed the fingerprints forming on her throat where Evelyn had grabbed her moments earlier.
Not one.
Richard walked toward her.
"Chloe."
His voice was cold.
"I've defended you for years."
"But this..."
He looked around the destroyed office.
"...is unacceptable."
Chloe almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because it hurt too much.
"You've defended me?"
she asked quietly.
Richard frowned.
"What does that mean?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"When your mother humiliated me at every family dinner..."
"You stayed silent."
"When your friends joked that I married you for money..."
"You laughed with them."
"When Evelyn moved into our company pretending to be your consultant..."
"You told me I was being paranoid."
She took one slow step forward.
"So tell me, Richard..."
"When exactly did you defend me?"
Silence.
For a brief moment, uncertainty crossed his face.
Then Evelyn reached for his arm.
"Richard..."
"I'm scared."
Immediately, his attention shifted back to her.
The hesitation disappeared.
He wrapped an arm around Evelyn's shoulders.
"It's okay."
"I'm here."
Chloe watched the scene without expression.
Eight years.
Eight years of marriage.
And in one simple gesture...
Richard answered every question she had been asking herself.
The attorneys placed several documents onto the conference table.
One of them adjusted his glasses.
"Mrs. Anderson, these are the finalized divorce papers."
"If you sign today, the separation can proceed quietly."
"If not..."
He hesitated.
"...litigation may become unpleasant."
Victoria crossed her arms.
"She'll sign."
Richard looked at Chloe.
"I don't want this to become public."
"Please."
His tone almost sounded reasonable.
"Let's end this with dignity."
Chloe stared at the papers.
Property division.
Financial disclosures.
Waiver of future claims.
Everything had been carefully prepared.
Everything except one detail.
The documents assumed she owned almost nothing.
She slowly picked up the pen.
Evelyn smiled.
Victoria relaxed.
Richard let out a quiet breath.
Finally.
Chloe examined the signature line.
Then...
She calmly placed the pen back onto the table.
"No."
Richard's patience snapped.
"What do you mean, no?"
"I mean exactly that."
"I won't sign."
Victoria slammed her hand against the table.
"You ungrateful girl!"
"After everything our family gave youâ"
Chloe interrupted.
"Your family gave me a last name."
She looked around the luxurious office.
"I gave your family everything else."
Richard laughed once.
A short, humorless laugh.
"Really?"
"You expect anyone to believe that?"
"I don't need anyone to believe me."
She looked toward the ceiling.
"I only need them to watch."
Everyone followed her gaze.
The tiny camera blinked again.
Richard frowned.
"What camera?"
Chloe pointed upward.
"That one."
Silence.
The IT director standing near the doorway suddenly stiffened.
He recognized the device immediately.
It wasn't part of the company's official security system.
Richard looked confused.
"What is she talking about?"
Before anyone answered, Evelyn shouted,
"Take it down!"
Everyone looked at her.
Realizing what she'd said, she quickly forced a nervous laugh.
"I mean..."
"If she's claiming it recorded something..."
"We should inspect it."
Too late.
The panic in her voice had betrayed her.
Chloe noticed Richard looking at Evelyn differently.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
Doubt.
Tiny.
Fragile.
The first crack.
Then the head of security entered.
"Sir."
Richard turned.
"What is it?"
"We received an automatic alert."
"What alert?"
"The office surveillance archive was accessed."
Evelyn's heart nearly stopped.
"No..."
The guard continued,
"A complete backup was initiated approximately four minutes ago."
Richard frowned.
"Who authorized that?"
The guard checked his tablet.
"It appears..."
He looked confused.
"...Mrs. Chloe Anderson."
Evelyn lunged toward Chloe.
"You planned this!"
Security officers immediately stepped between them.
Chloe didn't move.
"I planned to protect myself."
"You manipulated everything!"
"No."
Chloe met Evelyn's furious eyes.
"You did."
Richard rubbed his temples.
"This is getting ridiculous."
He turned to the security chief.
"Delete the recording."
The room became silent.
The chief hesitated.
"I... can't."
Richard stared at him.
"What?"
"The backup has already left our local servers."
"What does that mean?"
"It was automatically uploaded to encrypted cloud storage."
Richard's face darkened.
"Delete it from there."
The chief swallowed.
"I don't have permission."
"Who does?"
The answer came softly.
"Mrs. Anderson."
Everyone looked at Chloe.
She quietly reached into her purse and removed a small encrypted storage key.
"This key contains the authentication credentials."
Victoria scoffed.
"Take it from her."
Two security officers looked at Richard.
He hesitated.
Legally...
Could he?
Before anyone acted, Chloe slipped the key back into her purse.
"You can seize my purse."
She shrugged.
"It won't matter."
"There are three separate backups."
Richard stared at her.
"When did you become like this?"
Chloe looked almost surprised.
"I've always been like this."
"You just never bothered to notice."
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, Richard spoke.
"I'm calling the police."
Chloe nodded.
"Please do."
His eyebrows rose.
"You're not afraid?"
"No."
"Why?"
She looked toward the blinking camera one last time.
"Because the camera never lies."
Outside the office, employees had begun gathering in the hallway.
Rumors spread from floor to floor.
The CEO's wife.
The mistress.
A fight.
Divorce.
Hidden recordings.
No one knew the truth.
Not yet.
But somewhere else in the city...
Inside a secure cloud server...
A progress bar quietly reached one hundred percent.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
A notification appeared on another computer several miles away.
A young systems engineer named Daniel Brooks frowned as he read the automated alert.
Priority Backup Received.
Security Classification: Executive Level.
He clicked the file.
His eyes widened after only thirty seconds.
"Oh..."
he whispered.
"What have they done?"
Back in the executive office, distant police sirens began echoing through the streets below.
Chloe stood alone on one side of the room.
Richard stood beside Evelyn on the other.
Between them lay broken glass...
Unsigned divorce papers...
And a truth that had just become impossible to erase.
Neither Richard nor Evelyn realized it yet.
But the war they believed they had already won...
May you like
Had only just begun.
