Chapter 2 – The Woman They Wanted to Silence

Chapter 2 – The Woman They Wanted to Silence

The police arrived before the elevator doors had fully opened.

Two uniformed officers stepped into the executive hallway, followed by a detective carrying a leather folder. Employees who had gathered outside the CEO's office quickly moved aside, whispering among themselves.

Nobody returned to work.

Nobody wanted to miss what happened next.

Inside the office, the air was still thick with tension.

The shattered monitor remained on the floor.

Broken glass glittered beneath the fluorescent lights.

The unsigned divorce papers lay untouched on the conference table.

Detective Laura Bennett slowly surveyed the room before speaking.

"Who called emergency services?"

"I did."

Richard Anderson stepped forward, adjusting the cuff of his expensive suit.

"My wife became violent."

He gestured toward Chloe.

"I'd like to file a report."

Detective Bennett turned toward Chloe.

"You are Mrs. Chloe Anderson?"

"Yes."

"Would you like to tell me what happened?"

Before Chloe could answer, Evelyn spoke first.

"She threatened me."

Her voice trembled convincingly.

"I only asked her to sign the divorce agreement."

"She suddenly became aggressive."

"I was terrified."

Victoria Anderson nodded dramatically.

"I witnessed everything."

"So did everyone else."

Several executives exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Not everyone had witnessed everything.

Most had entered only after hearing the crash.

But no one corrected Victoria.

The detective noticed.

She made a small note inside her notebook.

Then she looked at Chloe.

"Mrs. Anderson?"

Chloe quietly brushed a piece of broken glass away from her shoe.

"My lawyer."

She looked directly at the detective.

"I'll make a full statement after my attorney arrives."

Richard laughed softly.

"So now you want a lawyer?"

"I've wanted one for a long time."

The detective nodded.

"That's your right."

She turned toward one of the officers.

"Photograph everything before anyone touches the room."

Evelyn's heart skipped a beat.

"The room?"

"The evidence."

Detective Bennett replied calmly.

"The broken monitor."

"The damaged furniture."

"The injuries."

She looked at Chloe.

"Mrs. Anderson, may I photograph your face?"

Richard frowned.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

The detective didn't even look at him.

"It has everything to do with determining what happened."

Chloe nodded.

"Of course."

As the officer raised his camera, everyone could clearly see the red handprint across Chloe's cheek.

The bruising had already begun.

A thin cut stretched across her wrist.

There were fresh scratches near her collarbone.

The detective looked toward Evelyn.

"I'll need photographs of you as well."

Evelyn hesitated.

"I..."

"My injuries aren't important."

"They are now."

Reluctantly, Evelyn stepped forward.

The officer examined her carefully.

No bruises.

No scratches.

No torn clothing.

Nothing.

Only perfectly applied makeup and carefully arranged tears.

Detective Bennett wrote another note.

Very slowly.

Very carefully.

Meanwhile, Richard's attorney leaned toward him.

"This isn't going as smoothly as expected."

Richard whispered,

"She's manipulating the situation."

"Maybe."

The attorney glanced toward the detective.

"But she's letting the evidence speak."

Across the room, Chloe quietly watched everything unfold.

For years she had argued with Richard.

Defended herself.

Explained.

Cried.

Begged him to listen.

None of it mattered.

Today...

She wasn't arguing.

She wasn't pleading.

She was simply allowing people to see.

And somehow...

That frightened Evelyn far more.

An hour later.

Chloe sat inside a private interview room at the downtown police station.

The walls were gray.

The table was metal.

A small recording device rested between her and Detective Bennett.

Her attorney, Michael Carter, arrived carrying a slim briefcase.

He shook Chloe's hand.

"I'm sorry we had to meet under these circumstances."

"So am I."

Michael opened his notebook.

"Before we begin..."

He looked at the detective.

"My client will answer every question."

"But I also have evidence to submit."

Detective Bennett nodded.

"I'm listening."

Michael placed a printed document onto the table.

"A security system automatically uploaded video footage before officers arrived."

The detective raised an eyebrow.

"The footage still exists?"

"Yes."

"Has anyone viewed it?"

"Not yet."

Detective Bennett leaned back.

"Then we'll obtain it legally."

She looked toward Chloe.

"Now tell me everything."

For the next forty minutes...

Chloe spoke without interruption.

She described the divorce papers.

The threats.

The attempt to force her signature.

The shattered monitor.

The hidden camera.

She never exaggerated.

Never raised her voice.

Never cried.

When she finished, the room became quiet.

The detective closed her notebook.

"I have one question."

Chloe nodded.

"Why didn't you leave earlier?"

The question lingered in the room.

Even Michael looked at her.

Chloe smiled sadly.

"Because leaving someone you love is never the hardest part."

"What is?"

"Accepting that they stopped loving you long before you noticed."

Neither the detective nor her attorney spoke.

Sometimes...

The simplest answers hurt the most.

Across town...

Inside Anderson Global Headquarters...

Evelyn paced furiously inside Richard's private office.

"She planned everything."

Richard stood near the window.

"I know."

"No."

Evelyn pointed toward him.

"You don't."

"She's smarter than you think."

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"I'm handling it."

Evelyn slammed her purse onto the desk.

"No."

"You're reacting."

"We need to move first."

Victoria entered without knocking.

"I've already spoken with Harold."

Richard looked up.

"Our PR director?"

Victoria nodded.

"News outlets have already received our statement."

"What statement?"

"That Chloe became emotionally unstable after refusing the divorce."

Richard hesitated.

"Was that necessary?"

Victoria stared at him.

"Either she controls the story..."

"Or we do."

Evelyn smiled for the first time that afternoon.

"Exactly."

Within minutes...

The first online headlines appeared.

CEO'S WIFE REPORTED AFTER VIOLENT INCIDENT.

HIGH-PROFILE DIVORCE TURNS CHAOTIC.

INSIDERS CLAIM MARITAL BREAKDOWN LED TO EMOTIONAL OUTBURST.

None of them mentioned the camera.

None mentioned the threats.

None mentioned Evelyn.

Richard stared silently at the articles.

He wasn't entirely comfortable.

But he didn't stop them.

Three floors below...

Inside the company's Information Technology Department...

Daniel Brooks sat alone in front of six computer monitors.

The backup notification remained open.

He knew company policy.

Executive files required authorization.

He should simply archive the footage and forget it.

Instead...

Curiosity won.

He clicked play.

The video began several minutes before anyone entered the office.

Daniel watched quietly.

Then...

His expression changed.

"Oh..."

He leaned closer.

Evelyn's voice filled his headphones.

"Sign the papers."

"Or I'll make sure you leave with nothing."

Then...

"Put that pen to paper or I'll smash this monitor right on your head!"

Daniel froze.

Seconds later...

He watched Evelyn lift the monitor.

Watched Chloe press the backup remote.

Watched Evelyn throw the monitor.

Watched everything.

There was no editing.

No missing context.

No misunderstanding.

When the recording ended...

Daniel slowly removed his headphones.

His hands trembled.

Because every news article now appearing online...

Was a lie.

His office phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel Brooks speaking."

A familiar voice came through the receiver.

It was Chief Financial Officer Harold Simmons.

"Delete the executive backup."

Daniel frowned.

"Sir?"

"You heard me."

"The footage never existed."

Daniel swallowed.

"I... can't."

"You can."

Harold's voice became colder.

"I'll authorize it."

"The files are encrypted."

"Find a way."

Daniel hesitated.

"This may become evidence."

Silence.

Then Harold spoke again.

"Daniel."

"You've worked here six years."

"You've got a mortgage."

"A family."

"It would be unfortunate if restructuring eliminated your position."

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at the phone.

His heart pounded.

Delete the truth...

Or lose everything.

Meanwhile...

At the police station...

Michael's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His face immediately hardened.

"What is it?"

Chloe asked.

He turned the phone toward her.

Every major business news website displayed the same headline.

ANDERSON GLOBAL CLAIMS CEO'S WIFE SUFFERED MENTAL BREAKDOWN.

Another article appeared seconds later.

COMPANY SOURCES DENY ALLEGATIONS OF COERCION.

Chloe quietly read each headline.

Then placed the phone back on the table.

"Amazing."

Michael frowned.

"What?"

"They're not trying to defend themselves."

"They're trying to erase me."

The detective overheard.

She looked toward Chloe.

"Do you expect they'll continue?"

Chloe met her eyes.

"They've spent eight years pretending I didn't build anything."

"They won't stop now."

Michael closed his notebook.

"They're making one mistake."

"What mistake?"

"They assume the only evidence is the camera."

Chloe looked at him thoughtfully.

"You know something."

Michael smiled faintly.

"I've represented you for three years."

"You always prepare for the worst."

He reached into his briefcase.

"And you asked me to keep something safe."

He placed a sealed envelope on the table.

Chloe recognized it immediately.

She had almost forgotten.

The envelope had remained unopened for nearly four years.

Across the front, written in her own handwriting, were six simple words:

Open Only If They Betray Me.

Chloe stared at the envelope for a long moment.

Then slowly looked up.

May you like

"They finally did."
