Chapter 5 – The Recording That Couldn't Be Erased

Chapter 5 – The Recording That Couldn't Be Erased

The share certificate slipped from Richard Anderson's fingers.

It fluttered onto his mahogany desk like a falling leaf.

For several seconds, he simply stared at it.

Forty-eight percent.

The number refused to change no matter how many times he looked.

Samuel Grant remained silent, allowing the truth to settle.

Finally, Richard spoke.

"This is impossible."

Samuel folded his weathered hands over his cane.

"No."

"It is overdue."

Richard grabbed the certificate again.

"My father never told me."

"He promised Chloe he wouldn't."

"Why?"

"Because she asked him not to."

Richard looked up in disbelief.

"She wanted to protect your pride," Samuel replied quietly. "She believed that if you discovered your wife's family had rescued your company, you would spend the rest of your life trying to repay a debt instead of building your future."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"So she lied."

"No."

Samuel's voice became firm.

"She stayed silent."

"There is a difference."

Richard turned toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The city stretched endlessly beneath him.

Eight years.

Eight years of believing he had saved Anderson Global.

Eight years of accepting awards, interviews, and magazine covers celebrating him as a self-made billionaire.

Eight years while the woman beside him quietly accepted the role of "the CEO's wife."

His phone vibrated.

Evelyn.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Samuel watched him carefully.

"Some truths arrive too late."

Richard slowly lowered himself into his chair.

"But they still matter."

Across the city, Chloe stood inside Michael Carter's office, reviewing the latest filings.

Stacks of legal documents covered the conference table.

Michael looked unusually optimistic.

"The court accepted our emergency motion."

Chloe nodded.

"And the evidence?"

"It's being preserved under judicial order."

He smiled faintly.

"No one can legally destroy it now."

Chloe exhaled for what felt like the first time in days.

"The recording?"

Michael tapped a sealed evidence envelope.

"The original server copy."

"The cloud backup."

"And Daniel's anonymous duplicate."

She looked surprised.

"You know it was Daniel?"

Michael nodded.

"He never signed his name."

"But he wrapped the flash drive in IT inventory paper."

Chloe couldn't help smiling.

"He was never good at hiding details."

Michael became serious again.

"He took a tremendous risk."

"I know."

"And if someone discovers he copied company evidence..."

"They'll destroy his career."

Chloe looked toward the window.

"Then we make sure they never get the chance."

Meanwhile...

Daniel Brooks sat inside his small apartment, unable to eat.

His wife noticed immediately.

"You haven't touched your dinner."

"I'm not hungry."

"You've said that three nights in a row."

Their eight-year-old daughter entered the kitchen carrying a drawing.

"Daddy."

He forced a smile.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

"I drew our family."

She held up the picture proudly.

Three smiling figures stood beneath a bright yellow sun.

Daniel felt a lump rise in his throat.

The anonymous phone call echoed in his mind.

"Your daughter finishes school at three fifteen."

His wife frowned.

"Daniel..."

"What's wrong?"

He hesitated.

Then quietly answered.

"I may lose my job."

She reached across the table and took his hand.

"We've survived worse."

He wished that were true.

This wasn't about losing a paycheck.

It was about choosing between fear...

And conscience.

At Anderson Global Headquarters...

Evelyn stormed into Harold Simmons' office without knocking.

"Richard isn't answering."

Harold looked exhausted.

"He knows."

"What?"

"About the shares."

Her face turned white.

"How?"

"Samuel Grant."

She clenched her fists.

"I told you that old man was dangerous."

Harold lowered his voice.

"We have a bigger problem."

"The court issued a preservation order."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"For what?"

"The surveillance footage."

Silence.

Then she whispered,

"I thought Daniel deleted it."

"He didn't."

Harold looked away.

"He copied it."

Evelyn slammed both hands onto the desk.

"I want him fired."

"You can't."

"I can."

"Not without Richard."

She straightened slowly.

"Then Richard becomes the next problem."

Later that afternoon...

Richard finally returned Evelyn's call.

"Where are you?"

She answered immediately.

"I've been trying to reach you all day."

"I'm at the office."

"We need to talk."

"So do I."

An hour later, Evelyn entered his office wearing her usual confident smile.

It disappeared the moment she saw the documents scattered across his desk.

"What happened?"

Richard looked directly at her.

"Did you know?"

She hesitated.

"Know what?"

"That Chloe owns nearly half the company."

A flicker of surprise crossed her face.

It lasted less than a second.

But Richard noticed.

"You knew."

"I..."

"I suspected."

"You suspected?"

She quickly recovered.

"Richard, does it really matter?"

He stared at her.

"Everything I believed about my company..."

"My marriage..."

"My success..."

"It all matters."

Evelyn walked closer.

She gently touched his arm.

"You're still the CEO."

"People respect you."

"Don't let Chloe manipulate you."

Richard stepped back.

"Manipulate me?"

"Yes."

"She's trying to make you feel guilty."

Richard's expression hardened.

"She never told anyone."

"What?"

"The shares."

"The investment."

"The agreements."

"If she wanted power..."

"She could have taken it years ago."

Evelyn had no answer.

For the first time...

Richard defended Chloe.

Even if only with questions.

Across town...

Michael received a phone call from Detective Laura Bennett.

"We've completed the forensic review."

"And?"

"The video is authentic."

"No edits."

"No missing frames."

"No signs of manipulation."

Michael smiled.

"Thank you, Detective."

"There is one more thing."

"What?"

"The audio enhancement."

Michael leaned forward.

"We recovered a sentence that wasn't audible in the original."

"What sentence?"

Detective Bennett opened her report.

"Evelyn said..."

She read carefully.

"Sign the papers, or Richard will never know what we did to his father."

Michael froze.

"What?"

"We confirmed the recording."

"There are no alterations."

Silence filled the line.

Finally Michael whispered,

"Send me the report immediately."

An hour later...

Chloe sat across from Michael as he replayed the enhanced recording.

The room fell silent.

Evelyn's voice emerged clearly through the speakers.

"Sign the papers..."

"Or Richard will never know what we did to his father."

The sentence echoed like a gunshot.

Chloe slowly looked up.

"I never heard that."

"The background noise covered it."

Michael replayed the clip again.

The words remained unmistakable.

"What does she mean?"

Chloe's mind raced.

Richard's father had died of a sudden heart attack three years earlier.

The doctors called it natural.

The family never questioned it.

Michael leaned back.

"This isn't just about divorce anymore."

"No."

Chloe whispered.

"It never was."

That evening...

Richard sat alone in his father's old study.

Samuel Grant's briefcase remained open.

The share certificate lay beside the leather notebook.

For the first time in years...

He opened the final drawer of his father's desk.

Inside rested only one object.

An old cassette recorder.

Attached was a handwritten note.

Richard—if you're listening to this, it means I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.

Richard's hands trembled.

He pressed the play button.

Static filled the room.

Then his father's familiar voice emerged.

"My son..."

"If you are hearing this..."

"I need you to trust Chloe."

"She has protected you more times than you will ever know."

Richard closed his eyes.

His father's voice continued.

"If anyone ever convinces you that she is your enemy..."

"They are lying."

A sudden knock interrupted the recording.

Richard quickly turned it off.

His assistant entered nervously.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"The police are here."

Richard frowned.

"For what?"

"They have a warrant."

"They need access to every security server in the building."

He stood immediately.

"Why?"

The assistant swallowed.

"They're investigating evidence tampering."

Downstairs...

Detective Laura Bennett watched as forensic technicians connected specialized equipment to Anderson Global's security network.

Harold Simmons stood nearby, visibly sweating.

Evelyn arrived moments later.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Detective Bennett calmly handed her a document.

"Court-authorized evidence preservation."

"You can't just seize company servers."

"We already have."

The technicians continued copying data.

One of them suddenly looked up.

"Detective."

"I found something."

She walked over.

"What is it?"

He pointed toward the monitor.

"Someone attempted to remotely erase the executive backup."

"When?"

"This morning."

"Did they succeed?"

The technician smiled.

"No."

"Whoever tried..."

He paused.

"...forgot one thing."

"The system automatically created three hidden backups."

Detective Bennett nodded slowly.

"So even if they erased one copy..."

"They couldn't erase them all."

She looked toward Evelyn.

The color had completely drained from her face.

Because at that moment, she realized the one piece of evidence capable of destroying everything...

May you like

Had become impossible to erase.
