Chapter 8 – The Boardroom Betrayal

Chapter 8 – The Boardroom Betrayal

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for nine o'clock.

By eight-thirty, every major financial news outlet had parked satellite vans outside Anderson Global Headquarters.

Rumors had become headlines.

Headlines had become panic.

Investors wanted answers.

Employees wanted certainty.

The board wanted someone to blame.

Richard Anderson stepped out of the elevator wearing the same charcoal suit he had worn to countless shareholder meetings. Yet today, it felt heavier than armor.

As he walked toward the executive boardroom, conversations stopped.

Directors who once greeted him with confident smiles now exchanged nervous glances.

The company was changing.

And everyone could feel it.

Inside the boardroom, twelve directors sat around the long walnut table.

Harold Simmons adjusted his glasses.

Helen Morrison reviewed the latest financial reports.

Outside counsel, Victor Lang, arranged stacks of legal documents.

Only one chair remained empty.

Richard's.

He entered without speaking.

"Good morning."

No one answered immediately.

Finally Helen broke the silence.

"The markets opened down another six percent."

Richard nodded.

"I've seen the numbers."

Harold pushed another report across the table.

"Three institutional investors are demanding leadership changes."

Richard looked at the document.

"They're asking for my resignation."

Victor corrected him.

"Not only yours."

"They're asking for an independent investigation into every executive appointment made during the last five years."

Richard immediately understood what that meant.

Evelyn.

Meanwhile...

Evelyn Brooks arrived through the private executive entrance.

She wore an elegant white suit, flawless makeup, and the same confident smile that had impressed executives for years.

Inside, however, she was barely holding herself together.

Her forged employment records had become public.

The surveillance recording had survived.

Detectives had confiscated her phone.

Worst of all...

Richard had stopped trusting her.

She entered her office and immediately locked the door.

Her assistant hurried inside.

"Miss Brooks..."

"What now?"

"The board is discussing executive accountability."

"So?"

"They may suspend you."

Evelyn laughed coldly.

"They won't."

"Why are you so sure?"

"Because too many people signed the same papers I did."

Her assistant looked confused.

"If I fall..."

She smiled.

"...I won't fall alone."

Across the city...

Chloe sat in Michael Carter's office reviewing court filings.

Michael closed another folder.

"The board meets in twenty minutes."

"I know."

"You could attend."

She slowly shook her head.

"Not yet."

Michael frowned.

"You own nearly half the company."

"Exactly."

She looked out the window.

"If I walk into that room now..."

"They'll think this has always been about power."

"And it isn't?"

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"It's about truth."

Michael studied her carefully.

"Do you still want to save Anderson Global?"

She answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

"Even after everything Richard did?"

She smiled sadly.

"The employees didn't betray me."

"They shouldn't lose their livelihoods because their CEO made terrible choices."

Back inside Anderson Global...

The board meeting officially began.

Victor Lang stood first.

"Before discussing financial performance..."

"There is an urgent legal matter."

He distributed sealed envelopes.

Each director opened one.

Inside were copies of Detective Bennett's preservation order.

The surveillance recording.

The evidence tampering investigation.

And a summary of Evelyn's falsified employment history.

Silence settled over the room.

Harold spoke first.

"This is catastrophic."

Helen nodded.

"If these allegations are true..."

"Our credibility is destroyed."

Richard remained quiet.

Victor continued.

"There is another issue."

He looked directly at Richard.

"Mr. Anderson..."

"Did you know your executive vice president submitted false credentials?"

Richard answered honestly.

"No."

Victor nodded.

"Did anyone here know?"

No one spoke.

Not one director.

Victor looked around the table.

"Then we have a governance failure."

At that exact moment...

The boardroom doors opened.

Evelyn walked inside.

No one had invited her.

She remained perfectly composed.

"I believe you're discussing me."

Victor stood.

"This meeting is restricted."

"I am still Executive Vice President."

Richard looked at her calmly.

"Sit down."

She smiled.

"I knew you'd be reasonable."

"No."

Richard's voice was colder than anyone had ever heard.

"I want everyone to hear your explanation."

For the first time...

Evelyn felt uneasy.

She remained standing.

"I've dedicated years to this company."

"No one questions your work."

Richard interrupted.

"They question your honesty."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"You believe Chloe."

"I believe evidence."

A murmur spread across the room.

Richard had never publicly contradicted Evelyn before.

She quickly shifted tactics.

"My employment records contain administrative mistakes."

Victor slid another document toward her.

"Two universities confirmed you never attended."

She didn't touch the paper.

"My recruiter handled those files."

Harold leaned forward.

"The recruiter doesn't exist."

Another silence.

Evelyn inhaled slowly.

"I can explain."

Richard folded his hands.

"Please do."

Instead of answering...

She attacked.

"What about Chloe?"

The room turned toward her.

"She secretly controlled company shares."

"She manipulated the board."

"She hid financial information."

Richard looked at her without emotion.

"She disclosed every transaction to our legal department."

Victor nodded.

"That's correct."

"The trust structure was reviewed years ago."

"And approved unanimously."

Evelyn stared at him.

"You knew?"

Victor answered quietly.

"The legal department knew."

"Confidential trusts are common."

"They were perfectly lawful."

She suddenly realized something horrifying.

The board had never been deceived by Chloe.

Only Richard had.

Evelyn's confidence cracked.

She looked desperately around the room.

Someone had to support her.

Someone had benefited from her rise.

Her eyes landed on Harold Simmons.

He quickly looked away.

Then Helen.

She remained silent.

Then Director Charles Benton.

He cleared his throat.

"Evelyn..."

"I think you should answer the questions."

She couldn't believe it.

These were the same people who praised her strategies.

Accepted her recommendations.

Celebrated her promotions.

Now...

Every one of them had abandoned her.

At police headquarters...

Detective Laura Bennett received another forensic report.

She opened it immediately.

Recovered emails.

Deleted months earlier.

One sender.

Harold Simmons.

Laura's expression hardened.

She picked up the phone.

"Michael."

"We have another problem."

"What?"

"Harold wasn't just a witness."

"He was communicating with Evelyn long before she joined Anderson Global."

"How long?"

Laura stared at the oldest recovered message.

"Nine years."

Michael fell silent.

"That was before Richard even met her."

"Exactly."

Back at the board meeting...

Victor received an urgent email.

He read it once.

Then again.

His face lost all color.

Richard noticed.

"What happened?"

Victor slowly turned the laptop toward him.

"Forensic investigators just recovered deleted executive emails."

Richard scanned the first page.

The sender.

Harold Simmons.

The recipient.

Evelyn Brooks.

The dates.

Nearly a decade old.

Before her official employment.

Before Richard's relationship with her.

Before everything.

Richard looked up.

"Harold..."

The older executive visibly trembled.

"I can explain."

"So can everyone else."

Victor interrupted.

"Because these emails suggest executive misconduct dating back almost ten years."

Harold slowly removed his glasses.

"It wasn't supposed to become this."

The room erupted.

Directors spoke over one another.

"When did this begin?"

"Who authorized her hiring?"

"What else has been hidden?"

Victor repeatedly struck the table with his pen.

"Order."

No one listened.

Years of trust collapsed within minutes.

Richard stood.

The room gradually became quiet.

He looked at Harold.

"You were my father's closest friend."

Harold lowered his head.

"I know."

"You hired Evelyn."

"Yes."

"You recommended every promotion."

"Yes."

"You told me she was loyal."

Harold whispered,

"I believed she was."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"No."

"You believed she was useful."

At that moment...

The boardroom doors opened once again.

Every head turned.

Michael Carter entered carrying a sealed envelope.

"I'm sorry for interrupting."

Victor frowned.

"This is a private meeting."

Michael placed the envelope on the table.

"It concerns Anderson Global."

Richard recognized him immediately.

"Chloe's attorney."

Michael nodded.

"Correct."

He looked around the room.

"My client asked me to deliver one document."

Victor opened the envelope.

Inside was a signed shareholder resolution.

His eyes widened.

"What is it?"

Richard asked.

Victor swallowed.

"Mrs. Chloe Anderson..."

He corrected himself.

"Mrs. Chloe Escalante..."

"...is exercising her voting rights."

Silence filled the boardroom.

Victor continued reading.

"She is calling for an extraordinary shareholders' meeting."

"When?"

Michael answered.

"Tomorrow morning."

Helen looked stunned.

"What is the purpose?"

Michael's expression remained calm.

"To determine whether the current executive leadership still deserves the shareholders' confidence."

Every director understood the meaning.

The board itself was about to face judgment.

After Michael left...

No one spoke for nearly a full minute.

Finally...

Richard looked around the table.

The people who had once celebrated every success now avoided his eyes.

His company.

His board.

His closest advisers.

None of them felt familiar anymore.

He quietly stood.

"I have one final question."

Everyone looked at him.

"If Chloe had never left..."

He paused.

"Would any of you have told me the truth?"

No one answered.

Not Harold.

Not Victor.

Not Helen.

Not a single director.

Their silence became the answer.

Richard nodded once.

Then walked toward the door.

Behind him...

The boardroom remained filled with executives.

But the trust that had built Anderson Global had finally shattered.

And tomorrow...

May you like

The real battle for the company would begin.
