Chapter 4 â The Secret Shareholder

Chapter 4 â The Secret Shareholder
The boardroom on the thirty-sixth floor had witnessed billion-dollar mergers, hostile takeovers, and decisions that shaped entire industries.
But on Monday morning, an invisible tension settled over the polished walnut table long before the directors arrived.
Every television in the lobby played the same headlines.
ANDERSON GLOBAL CEO FACES PUBLIC DIVORCE BATTLE.
The investors called it bad publicity.
The board called it a distraction.
Only one person knew it was the beginning of something much worse.
Richard Anderson walked into the room exactly at nine o'clock.
His expensive charcoal suit was flawless.
His posture remained confident.
Only the dark circles beneath his eyes hinted that he had barely slept.
The directors greeted him politely.
Some offered sympathetic smiles.
Others carefully avoided mentioning the scandal.
Richard appreciated that.
He needed normalcy.
At least for one meeting.
"Let's begin," he said.
The corporate secretary distributed quarterly reports while the projector displayed revenue charts.
Richard launched into his presentation with practiced confidence.
"Our international expansion remains on schedule."
"The Singapore acquisition will close next month."
"Construction on the Madrid project has resumed."
He spoke clearly.
Professionally.
Like nothing outside those walls existed.
Until the Chief Financial Officer interrupted.
"Before we move forward..."
Harold Simmons adjusted his glasses.
"There is another matter."
Richard frowned.
"What matter?"
Harold exchanged uneasy glances with several directors.
"The legal department received an unusual request this morning."
Richard's stomach tightened.
"What request?"
"A shareholder requested certified copies of all voting agreements signed during the company's restructuring eight years ago."
Richard blinked.
"Who requested them?"
Harold looked down at the document in front of him.
"The law firm representing Mrs. Chloe Anderson."
Silence spread across the room.
One director cleared his throat.
"Why would she need those?"
Richard answered immediately.
"The divorce."
Another director wasn't convinced.
"Corporate restructuring documents have nothing to do with a divorce."
Richard forced a smile.
"I'm sure her lawyers are simply being thorough."
But inside...
An uneasy feeling continued growing.
Across town...
Michael Carter carefully placed a thick binder onto Chloe's dining table.
Inside were copies of every financial document connected to Anderson Global's survival eight years earlier.
Chloe poured two cups of coffee before sitting opposite him.
"Did you verify everything?"
Michael nodded.
"Three times."
"And?"
He opened the binder.
"The trust still exists."
"The shares were never transferred."
"The ownership never changed."
He looked directly at her.
"Legally..."
"You remain the company's largest shareholder."
Chloe stared silently at the papers.
For years, those documents had remained untouched inside a private vault.
She had almost forgotten they existed.
Not because they weren't important.
Because she had trusted Richard completely.
"I never wanted this."
She whispered.
Michael understood.
"You wanted a marriage."
"Not control."
She nodded.
"I wanted him to succeed."
"You made sure he did."
Michael turned another page.
"And now..."
"He believes you contributed nothing."
A sad smile appeared on Chloe's face.
"That's because I allowed him to believe it."
Eight years earlier...
The Anderson family mansion had been filled with despair.
Richard sat in his father's office, surrounded by unpaid invoices.
The company had seventy-two hours before its largest lender demanded immediate repayment.
Bankruptcy was inevitable.
Richard buried his face in his hands.
"I've failed."
His father remained unusually calm.
"There may still be one option."
Richard looked up hopefully.
"What option?"
Before his father could answer, Chloe entered carrying two cups of coffee.
She quietly placed one beside Richard.
He barely noticed.
"I'm sorry."
He whispered.
"I brought you into this."
Chloe gently squeezed his shoulder.
"We're married."
"We're already in it together."
Richard managed a weak smile.
"I don't know how to save the company."
Chloe looked toward his father.
The older man gave the slightest nod.
She understood.
That night...
While Richard slept in exhaustion...
Chloe made a phone call she had hoped she would never need.
"Dad..."
She whispered into the receiver.
"I need your help."
Present day.
Michael slid another document across the table.
"Your father transferred the investment through Escalante Holdings."
Chloe nodded.
"He never wanted publicity."
"He wanted me to earn my own life."
Michael smiled.
"He also wanted to protect you."
He pointed toward several legal clauses.
"These were brilliant."
"The trust owns forty-eight percent."
"But the beneficiary remains confidential."
"Even Richard couldn't access it."
Chloe looked away.
"He never tried."
At Anderson Global Headquarters...
Richard couldn't concentrate.
The board meeting ended early.
Numbers blurred together.
Every sentence reminded him of his father's notebook.
Without Chloe's solution...
What solution?
His father hadn't explained.
Richard walked directly into the archives department.
The elderly archivist looked surprised.
"Mr. Anderson?"
"I need every restructuring document from eight years ago."
The archivist hesitated.
"Those records require dual authorization."
"I'm the CEO."
"Yes..."
"But not the sole authority."
Richard frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The archivist swallowed nervously.
"Certain files were sealed under your father's instructions."
Richard's voice hardened.
"Open them."
"I'm afraid I can't."
"Why not?"
The archivist quietly handed him a photocopy.
It contained one sentence.
Release requires written approval from the Primary Beneficiary.
Richard looked up.
"Who is that?"
The archivist slowly shook his head.
"I don't know."
"It's confidential."
Meanwhile...
Evelyn sat inside her luxury penthouse overlooking the river.
She impatiently refreshed financial news websites.
Her phone buzzed.
It was Harold.
"We have a problem."
She immediately stood.
"What happened?"
"Chloe requested historical ownership records."
"So?"
Harold lowered his voice.
"There are documents even Richard has never seen."
Evelyn's heartbeat quickened.
"What kind of documents?"
"I don't know."
"But Richard is asking questions."
Silence.
Then Evelyn whispered,
"We need those files."
"I've tried."
"They're sealed."
"Then unseal them."
"I can't."
"For the first time in twenty years..."
Harold admitted quietly.
"I don't know who actually has the authority."
That evening...
Daniel Brooks sat alone inside the IT department.
He had ignored every order to delete the backup.
Instead...
He made another copy.
Then another.
One remained inside encrypted cloud storage.
One stayed on an external drive hidden inside his apartment.
One...
He mailed anonymously to Michael Carter.
"If they destroy one..."
He murmured.
"They won't destroy all three."
As he sealed the package, another notification appeared on his monitor.
Unauthorized access attempt detected.
Someone was trying to break into the backup server.
Daniel immediately disconnected the system from the network.
Too late.
A message flashed across the screen.
WE KNOW WHAT YOU DID.
The monitor went black.
Elsewhere...
Inside a quiet retirement home...
Eighty-year-old Samuel Grant folded his newspaper.
The former Anderson Global board chairman had retired five years earlier.
He rarely followed corporate news anymore.
Until today's headline caught his attention.
CEO'S WIFE ACCUSED OF CORPORATE DISPUTE.
Samuel sighed deeply.
"I hoped this day would never come."
His nurse looked at him curiously.
"Is something wrong?"
Samuel slowly stood and walked toward an old wooden cabinet.
From the bottom drawer...
He removed a faded envelope.
Across the front, written in Richard's father's handwriting, were the words:
To Samuel. If Richard ever turns against Chloe... tell him everything.
Samuel closed his eyes.
"So..."
He whispered.
"The time has finally come."
The following morning...
Richard received another surprise.
His executive assistant entered nervously.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"There's someone insisting on seeing you."
"I have meetings."
"He says your father invited him."
Richard frowned.
"Who?"
The assistant handed over a business card.
Richard's expression changed immediately.
Samuel Grant
Former Chairman
Richard looked toward the office door.
"Send him in."
Minutes later...
The elderly man entered carrying a worn leather briefcase.
He didn't smile.
He didn't offer congratulations.
He simply placed the briefcase on Richard's desk.
"I promised your father I would never open this..."
He paused.
"...unless you made the biggest mistake of your life."
Richard stared at him.
"What mistake?"
Samuel looked directly into his eyes.
"Believing that Anderson Global belonged only to you."
He slowly unlocked the briefcase.
Inside rested dozens of original legal documents.
On top of them lay a single share certificate.
Richard picked it up.
His hands froze.
The largest shareholder listed wasn't Anderson.
It wasn't any investment fund.
It wasn't an international bank.
It was a name he never expected to see.
Chloe Isabella Anderson.
Forty-eight percent.
Controlling interest.
Richard read it again.
And again.
His world tilted.
For eight years...
The woman he believed depended on him...
Had quietly owned nearly half of everything he called his empire.
May you like
And she had never once asked for the credit.
