CHAPTER 12 â The Last Lie

CHAPTER 12 â The Last Lie
For three years, Grant Callahan had lived with a funeral.
Every morning.
Every night.
Every empty room inside the mansion.
He had learned how to exist with the pain.
He had learned how to tell himself that some losses could never be repaired.
Amelia was gone.
That was the truth he had accepted.
The truth that allowed him to keep moving.
But now the impossible had happened.
The dead woman was alive.
And the man who had taken her was his own brother.
The private jet landed just after midnight.
Grant barely remembered the flight.
He remembered Emma sitting beside him.
He remembered Marcus giving orders.
He remembered Daniel speaking about legal procedures.
But his mind kept returning to one thought.
Amelia.
Alive.
The location was an abandoned property outside the city.
A place Thomas had purchased under a false name.
A place nobody knew existed.
Except Thomas.
And apparently Amelia.
Grant stepped out of the vehicle.
Police surrounded the building.
But he barely noticed.
The only thing he could see was the old wooden door ahead.
The door behind which his entire life had been stolen.
"Grant."
Emma touched his arm.
He looked at her.
She looked afraid.
"You don't have to do this alone."
For months, Grant had been the person protecting everyone.
But now someone was reminding him that he did not have to carry everything by himself.
He nodded.
Then walked forward.
The door opened.
Slowly.
Inside was darkness.
The smell of dust.
Old wood.
Cold air.
Then a voice.
"Grant."
He stopped.
Because he knew that voice.
Even after three years.
Even after believing he would never hear it again.
"Amelia."
She stepped into the light.
And the world stopped.
She looked different.
Older.
Tired.
There were scars near her temple.
Her hair was shorter.
But her eyes were the same.
The same eyes that had looked at him across crowded rooms.
The same eyes that had loved him.
Grant could not move.
Neither could Amelia.
Three years of grief.
Three years of questions.
Three years of believing they had lost each other.
Collapsed into one impossible moment.
Then Amelia whispered:
"I'm sorry."
And Grant broke.
Not like a businessman.
Not like a powerful man.
Like a husband who had spent three years mourning a woman who was standing in front of him.
He crossed the room.
And held her.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Because some emotions were too large for words.
Finally, Grant stepped back.
His eyes filled with pain.
"Why?"
Amelia closed her eyes.
"I tried to come back."
"Every day."
"Every single day."
"Then why didn't you?"
The question came out broken.
Not angry.
Just wounded.
Amelia looked away.
"Because Thomas convinced me that Lily would die if I contacted you."
Grant froze.
"What?"
She nodded.
"He told me he had people watching the house."
"He told me Renata was already inside your life."
"He told me if I appeared, they would kill Lily before anyone could stop them."
Grant looked away.
Because suddenly he understood.
Thomas had not only stolen his wife.
He had stolen his ability to trust.
"But you could have called."
Amelia looked at him.
"I did."
A pause.
"Many times."
Grant frowned.
"What?"
"Every time I tried, someone intercepted the messages."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Do you have proof?"
Amelia nodded.
She reached into her coat.
A small device.
A recording.
"We need to hear it."
Grant said.
The audio played.
Thomas's voice.
Clear.
Cold.
"Your husband won't believe you."
"He's already convinced himself you're dead."
Amelia's voice answered:
"You can't keep my daughter from me forever."
Thomas laughed.
"I don't need forever."
"Just long enough."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Grant asked:
"Why did he do this?"
Amelia looked toward the floor.
"Because of Victor."
Grant stiffened.
His father.
Again.
"Your father had a secret."
"What secret?"
Amelia hesitated.
"Thomas wasn't just angry because he wasn't his biological son."
Grant waited.
"He believed Victor destroyed his real family."
A cold feeling moved through Grant.
"What does that mean?"
Amelia looked at him.
"Your father was responsible for the death of Thomas's parents."
Silence.
"No."
Grant shook his head.
"My father wasn't like that."
Amelia's eyes filled with sadness.
"I wanted to believe that too."
The final piece of the puzzle.
The reason Thomas had gone so far.
The reason hatred had survived for decades.
But then another truth appeared.
One that hurt even more.
"Grant."
Amelia grabbed his hand.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"Thomas didn't act alone."
Grant looked at her.
"Renata."
Amelia shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
"Someone else."
Before Grant could ask...
The lights inside the building flickered.
Everyone turned.
Marcus reached for his weapon.
Then stopped.
Because the sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
A person entered.
Everyone froze.
Because they recognized him.
Thomas Callahan.
But he wasn't holding a gun.
He was holding a file.
And he was smiling.
"You finally found her."
Grant stepped forward.
"Why?"
Thomas looked at Amelia.
Then at Grant.
"Because you still don't know the whole truth."
He threw the file onto the table.
Documents scattered.
Photographs.
Reports.
And one image landed face-up.
A picture of Victor Callahan.
Standing beside a woman.
A woman Grant recognized.
His mother.
Thomas smiled.
"Ask yourself why your mother never told you who I really was."
Grant stared.
His world shifted.
Again.
Thomas leaned closer.
"The biggest lie wasn't that Amelia died."
A pause.
"The biggest lie was that you were the rightful heir."
Nobody spoke.
Because the final secret of the Callahan family...
May you like
Had just been revealed.
