CHAPTER 9 â The Letter From A Dead Woman

CHAPTER 9 â The Letter From A Dead Woman
The voice outside Lilyâs bedroom belonged to a ghost.
At least, that was what Grant Callahan believed.
Because the person standing in the hallway should not have existed.
Three years ago, everyone connected to Ameliaâs death had been accounted for.
Dead.
Missing.
Or investigated.
But the woman standing beneath the dim hallway light was someone Grant had never expected to see again.
Someone from his past.
Someone Amelia trusted.
"Claire?"
The name left Grantâs mouth like a question.
The woman looked older than he remembered.
Her dark hair was shorter.
Her face carried exhaustion.
But it was her.
Claire Whitmore.
Amelia's closest friend.
The woman everyone believed disappeared after the accident.
Lily stared at her.
Her small body shook.
"Mommy knew her."
Grant stepped between Claire and his daughter.
"Stay where you are."
Claire raised both hands.
"I'm not here to hurt her."
"Then explain why you broke into my house."
A painful expression crossed Claire's face.
"Because if I had come through the front door..."
She looked toward the security cameras.
"They would have known."
Grant's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Claire didn't answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
The people who had been watching.
Marcus and several guards arrived seconds later.
Weapons raised.
Grant lifted a hand.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at him.
He looked back at Claire.
"Why are you here?"
Claire reached into her coat.
Immediately, the guards reacted.
But she slowly pulled out something small.
An envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
And sealed.
Grant recognized the handwriting before he touched it.
His heart stopped.
Because he knew that handwriting.
Amelia.
"No."
The word escaped him.
Claire held the envelope toward him.
"She wrote this for you."
Grant didn't move.
For three years, he had imagined receiving one more message from his wife.
One more conversation.
One more chance to hear her voice.
But now that moment had arrived.
And he was afraid.
Because letters from the dead were not supposed to exist.
"Why didn't I get this before?"
Claire looked down.
"Because I couldn't get it to you."
"Why?"
"Because Thomas knew."
The room went silent.
Grant took the envelope.
His hands were shaking.
The paper was fragile.
Like time itself had been trying to erase the truth.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
Amelia's handwriting filled it.
Grant,
If you are reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.
Grant stopped.
Emma looked away, giving him privacy.
But nobody left.
Because everyone understood.
This letter was the voice Amelia had lost.
I wanted to tell you everything myself.
I should have told you sooner.
I was afraid you would react before understanding.
Grant closed his eyes.
The words sounded exactly like her.
Thomas is not who you think he is.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
I discovered financial records showing that he had been moving company funds for years.
Millions of dollars.
He was hiding losses and creating fake accounts.
When I confronted him, he didn't deny it.
He told me he deserved everything because he had been forgotten his entire life.
Grant swallowed.
But the money was not the only thing.
Thomas believed your father stole his future.
He believed the Callahan name belonged to him.
He wanted revenge.
Grant looked at Claire.
She nodded.
I found out he was working with a woman named Renata Cole.
She was not your friend.
She was not trying to help our family.
She was chosen because she could get close to Lily.
Grant felt sick.
The words confirmed everything.
They planned to remove me.
Then they planned to make Renata Lily's guardian.
Once Lily inherited the trust, they would control everything.
Emma whispered:
"She knew."
Grant nodded slowly.
Amelia knew.
She had known.
And he had never listened.
Then he reached the final part.
And everything changed.
But Grant... there is something I need you to know.
The accident was not their first attempt.
Grant froze.
Someone inside our family helped them.
Someone who knew our routines.
Someone who knew exactly how to make me disappear.
Grant looked up.
"Someone inside the family?"
Claire's expression was full of pain.
"Amelia knew who."
Grant looked back at the letter.
The final lines were written darker.
As if Amelia's hand had been shaking.
If I die, do not trust anyone who says they are protecting Lily.
The person who claims to love her most may be the one who wants her inheritance.
And Grant...
Please forgive yourself.
You were never a bad father.
You were just fighting battles that did not matter while our daughter was fighting hers alone.
The letter ended.
No signature.
Only one sentence at the bottom.
Lily knows where the truth is hidden.
Everyone looked toward the little girl.
Lily stared at the letter.
Then whispered:
"Mommy told me."
Grant immediately turned.
"What?"
Lily touched Mr. Buttons.
"She put it somewhere safe."
Emma looked at the rabbit.
The same rabbit Lily had carried since she was a baby.
Grant noticed.
"Inside?"
Lily nodded.
"Mommy said nobody would look there."
Emma carefully took the rabbit.
The old stuffed toy looked ordinary.
A child's toy.
Nothing more.
But after everything they had discovered...
Nothing was ordinary anymore.
Claire stepped closer.
"There is something else."
Grant looked at her.
"What?"
Claire took a breath.
"Amelia didn't die immediately."
The room went silent.
Again.
"She survived the crash."
Grant's face changed.
"Lily told us."
Claire nodded.
"I know."
"How?"
Claire looked at the floor.
"Because I was there."
Everyone froze.
"You were there?"
Grant whispered.
Claire nodded.
"I arrived after the car went over the barrier."
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because Thomas found me first."
A pause.
"He told me if I spoke..."
She looked toward Lily.
"He would make sure Lily disappeared too."
Grant felt anger rise.
Not the controlled anger of a businessman.
The raw anger of a father.
"You let me believe my wife died alone."
Claire cried silently.
"I was scared."
Grant looked away.
Because he understood fear.
But he also understood the price of silence.
Then Claire said something that changed everything.
"There is one more thing Amelia told me."
Grant turned.
"What?"
Claire looked at Lily.
"Your wife said the person who ordered the attack..."
A pause.
"Was not Thomas."
The room went completely still.
Grant stared.
"What are you saying?"
Claire whispered:
"Thomas was following someone else's orders."
At that exact moment...
The lights went out.
Again.
A crash came from downstairs.
Marcus shouted through the radio:
"Everyone stay where you are!"
Then silence.
A few seconds later...
A single sound echoed through the mansion.
A gunshot.
Emma grabbed Lily.
Grant moved instantly.
And from the darkness came a voice.
A voice everyone recognized.
"Looking for the truth, brother?"
Thomas Callahan stepped into the hallway.
May you like
Holding a gun.
