CHAPTER 5 – The Woman Who Wanted The Fortune

CHAPTER 5 – The Woman Who Wanted The Fortune

Thomas Callahan had always been the man behind the curtain.

That was what made him dangerous.

Grant was the face of the family.

The one reporters photographed.

The one investors trusted.

The one whose name appeared on every building, every contract, every magazine cover.

But Thomas?

Thomas was the person who made things happen.

He negotiated quietly.

He solved problems nobody wanted to discuss.

He knew every weakness, every secret, every person who could be bought.

For thirty years, Grant believed that made his brother loyal.

Now he understood something much darker.

Thomas had not been standing beside him.

He had been standing behind him.

Waiting.

The morning after discovering the hidden video, Grant called an emergency meeting.

Not at the company.

Not in public.

Inside the Callahan estate.

The same house where the betrayal began.

Around the long dining table sat the people Grant trusted most.

Marcus Hale.

Daniel Brooks.

The family attorney, Richard Lawson.

And Emma.

Emma almost refused to sit.

"This is a family matter."

she said.

Grant looked at her.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"This became your matter the moment you protected my daughter."

Emma lowered her eyes.

She still wasn't comfortable being treated as someone important.

But Grant knew something.

The people who deserved trust were not always the ones born into power.

Richard Lawson opened a file.

"There is something you need to know about the Callahan estate."

Grant looked up.

"What?"

"The inheritance agreement."

A silence.

Daniel frowned.

"What does that have to do with Renata?"

Richard hesitated.

"Everything."

He placed a document on the table.

"After Amelia's death, Lily became the primary beneficiary of the Callahan family trust."

Grant nodded.

"I know."

But Richard continued.

"What you don't know is the condition."

Grant's expression changed.

"What condition?"

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"If Lily becomes unable to inherit before the age of twenty-five..."

He paused.

"The control of the trust transfers."

"To whom?"

Grant asked.

Richard looked down.

"To the appointed guardian."

The room went silent.

Emma slowly understood.

"Renata."

Richard nodded.

"After marriage, Renata would have become Lily's legal guardian."

Grant stared.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The perfect fiancée.

The sudden interest in his daughter.

The obsession with controlling Lily.

It was never about becoming a mother.

It was about becoming the person who controlled billions.

"How much?"

Grant asked.

Richard looked at him.

"The trust currently holds approximately eight hundred million dollars."

Emma's eyes widened.

Eight hundred million.

A number so large it barely felt real.

But Grant wasn't thinking about money.

He was thinking about Lily.

A little girl who could not speak.

A little girl who trusted the wrong person because her father had chosen her.

"Renata knew."

Grant said.

Daniel nodded.

"She knew everything."

He opened another folder.

"Her background."

Photos.

Documents.

Financial records.

"Renata Cole was not the wealthy socialite she claimed to be."

Grant looked through the pages.

Debt.

Lawsuits.

Failed businesses.

"She was drowning."

Daniel nodded.

"Then she met Thomas."

A cold feeling moved through Grant.

"What did Thomas promise her?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Your fortune."

Meanwhile...

At the private detention facility, Renata Cole sat in a small interview room.

She looked completely different.

No designer dress.

No diamonds.

No perfect makeup.

Only anger.

A police officer placed a folder in front of her.

"Renata Cole."

She smiled.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with."

The officer didn't react.

"We know about the abuse."

A pause.

"We know about the necklace."

Another pause.

"And we know about your connection to Thomas Callahan."

For the first time...

Renata stopped smiling.

Only briefly.

Then she leaned back.

"You think Thomas betrayed me?"

The officer said nothing.

Renata laughed softly.

"Men like Thomas don't betray people."

She looked toward the mirror.

"They use them."

Back at the estate, Lily sat with Emma in the garden.

For the first time in years, she was outside without fear.

She held a small notebook.

Emma smiled.

"Are you drawing again?"

Lily nodded.

"What are you drawing?"

The little girl turned the notebook around.

A house.

A tree.

Three people.

Emma.

Lily.

And Grant.

Emma's heart tightened.

"You drew your father."

Lily nodded.

Then she wrote something underneath.

Daddy is trying.

Emma looked away.

Because those three words carried more pain than anger.

Children didn't need perfect parents.

They needed parents who tried.

Across the garden, Grant watched them.

He had spent his life building walls.

Around his company.

Around his emotions.

Around his family.

Now his daughter was teaching him how to take them down.

His phone rang.

Daniel.

Grant answered.

"What happened?"

Daniel's voice was serious.

"We found Thomas's financial records."

"And?"

"He transferred money to Renata for months."

Grant closed his eyes.

"How much?"

A pause.

"Almost ten million dollars."

Grant looked toward Lily.

"Anything else?"

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation told Grant everything.

"What?"

"We found another payment."

"To who?"

Silence.

Then:

"The doctor who treated Lily after the accident."

Grant froze.

"What?"

"The psychiatrist."

A cold wave moved through him.

The doctor who diagnosed Lily.

The doctor who told him his daughter was too traumatized to speak.

The doctor who convinced him to stop asking questions.

Had been paid.

That night, Grant walked into Lily's room.

She was asleep.

Her small hand rested on Mr. Buttons.

He sat beside her.

And for the first time, he allowed himself to feel the full weight of what had happened.

Renata hurt her.

Thomas betrayed him.

But there was another truth.

He had trusted them.

He had allowed them close.

He had failed to protect the person who mattered most.

Grant gently touched Lily's hair.

"I promise you..."

he whispered.

"No one will ever hurt you again."

But outside the room...

Someone was listening.

Someone who had entered the estate without being detected.

Someone who knew every camera.

Every entrance.

Every secret.

The figure looked toward Lily's bedroom door.

And whispered:

"Your father still doesn't know the whole truth."

A phone screen lit up.

A message appeared:

Phase two begins tonight.

The sender's name appeared.

May you like

Thomas Callahan.
