Chapter 14 – The Woman Who Wanted Everything

Chapter 14 – The Woman Who Wanted Everything

People often think greed begins with wanting money.

They are wrong.

Money is only the final destination.

Greed begins much earlier.

With a feeling of being entitled.

A belief that the world owes you something.

A belief that other people's sacrifices are simply opportunities waiting for you to claim.

Vanessa Cole had spent her entire life chasing a version of herself she believed she deserved.

Beautiful.

Powerful.

Important.

And when she finally stood close enough to touch the Moretti empire...

She refused to let go.

Even when she realized she had never truly owned a piece of it.

The Woman Behind the Perfect Image

Before Vanessa became Alessandro Moretti's fiancée...

She had been invisible.

Not poor.

Not powerless.

Just ordinary.

And Vanessa hated ordinary.

She grew up watching wealthy families enter rooms and receive everything without asking.

People opened doors.

People remembered their birthdays.

People forgave their mistakes.

She learned something very young:

A person's value was measured by who stood beside them.

And Vanessa decided she would never stand alone.

She changed everything about herself.

Her appearance.

Her voice.

Her social circle.

She studied powerful people the way others studied books.

She learned what they wanted.

What they feared.

What they needed.

And then...

She became exactly what they were looking for.

When she met Alessandro, she thought she had finally won.

The perfect man.

The perfect name.

The perfect future.

She didn't love him.

Not the way people believed.

She loved what being Alessandro Moretti meant.

Security.

Status.

A place among the untouchable.

But she made one mistake.

She underestimated the one thing Alessandro valued more than power.

Truth.

Vanessa's Last Bargain

The day after Emma disappeared, Vanessa requested a meeting.

Nobody wanted to see her.

Not Alessandro.

Not Marco.

Not me.

But Alessandro agreed.

Not because he trusted her.

Because he knew every person involved in this battle had a piece of information.

Even enemies could hold keys.

Vanessa entered the private study.

She looked exhausted.

For once, there was no perfect makeup.

No carefully practiced smile.

Just a woman who knew her world was collapsing.

"I can help you find her."

Those were her first words.

Alessandro didn't offer her a seat.

"You helped take her."

Vanessa flinched.

"No."

"Then explain why Adrian knew about her."

Silence.

"I made mistakes."

Alessandro's eyes hardened.

"Mistakes don't put children in danger."

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time...

She looked ashamed.

"I didn't know he would do this."

"You knew enough."

A tear appeared.

"I thought he wanted the company."

A bitter laugh escaped her.

"I thought I was helping myself."

The room was silent.

Then Alessandro said:

"You always wanted everything."

Vanessa looked at him.

His voice remained calm.

"Did you ever stop to think about what happens when someone wants everything?"

A pause.

"They eventually destroy the things they already have."

The Deal

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She placed a small device on the desk.

"A recording."

Marco immediately moved closer.

"What is it?"

"Insurance."

Vanessa looked at Alessandro.

"Against Adrian."

The recording contained a conversation.

Adrian's voice.

Cold.

Controlled.

"You understand your role."

Vanessa's voice answered:

"Yes."

"You will announce the pregnancy."

"And Alessandro will accept the child."

I felt sick listening.

But then Adrian said something else.

Something Vanessa had never revealed.

"When the child is born..."

"The Moretti board will transfer control."

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"And if he refuses?"

Adrian answered:

"He won't."

A pause.

"Because men like Alessandro always choose family."

The recording ended.

Alessandro stared at the device.

"He planned everything."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

Then I noticed something.

Something in Vanessa's face.

Regret.

Real regret.

"You knew about Daniel."

My voice cut through the room.

Vanessa looked at me.

Slowly...

She nodded.

My stomach dropped.

"What did you know?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Not everything."

"Tell me."

She swallowed.

"I knew Adrian was interested in your family before I ever met Alessandro."

"Why?"

"Because of Emma."

The room became silent.

"He told me the Moretti family had a missing piece."

"He said your daughter was proof."

I stepped back.

"You knew she was a target?"

Vanessa couldn't answer.

That was answer enough.

The Monster She Created

For the first time...

Vanessa saw what she had helped create.

Not a scandal.

Not a corporate takeover.

Not a marriage arrangement.

A war.

With a child in the middle.

"I never wanted this."

Her voice broke.

I looked at her.

"Yes, you did."

She stared.

"You wanted his name."

"You wanted his power."

"You wanted his life."

A pause.

"But you never wanted the responsibility that came with it."

Those words hurt because they were true.

Vanessa covered her face.

"I was so close."

Nobody responded.

"I was so close to becoming someone."

Alessandro looked at her.

And for a moment...

I thought he might forgive her.

But he didn't.

Because forgiveness did not mean forgetting.

"You wanted everything."

His voice was quiet.

"But you never understood what everything actually was."

He looked at the photograph of Emma on his desk.

"Everything is not money."

"It's not a name."

"It's not a company."

"Everything is the people who trust you."

Vanessa broke down.

Because she finally understood.

She had spent years chasing a place in a family...

While destroying the very thing that made a family valuable.

The Hidden Room

Before leaving, Vanessa stopped.

"There is one more thing."

Everyone looked at her.

"Adrian has a weakness."

Alessandro narrowed his eyes.

"What?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"His mother."

Silence.

"She is alive."

Maria stepped forward.

"Impossible."

Vanessa shook her head.

"Adrian hid her."

"Why?"

"Because she knows the truth."

The truth.

Again.

Always the truth.

"Where is she?"

Alessandro asked.

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"Somewhere Adrian thinks nobody can find."

Then she said something that changed everything.

"She knows what happened the night Giovanni Moretti died."

Everyone froze.

Because Giovanni's death had always been the one mystery nobody solved.

Two bullets behind a church.

A grieving son.

A family empire built on tragedy.

But what if the murder was not random?

What if it was the first move in a war that lasted decades?

The Woman Who Lost Everything

As Vanessa walked toward the door, she stopped.

"Elena."

I looked at her.

For a moment...

She wasn't the woman who attacked me.

She wasn't the woman who lied.

She was simply someone who realized too late that she had chosen the wrong side.

"I really did think I was going to be happy."

I said nothing.

She smiled sadly.

"That's the worst part."

"I wasn't trying to destroy anyone."

"I was just trying not to be nobody."

Then she left.

Outside...

The rain continued falling.

The same rain that had fallen the night Emma exposed her lie.

The same rain that had watched the Moretti empire begin to break.

But this time...

Something was different.

Because Alessandro finally understood.

The empire was never his greatest responsibility.

Emma was.

That night, Marco found the location.

A hidden property.

Abandoned.

Off the official records.

Where Adrian was holding Emma.

Everyone prepared to leave.

But before Alessandro walked out, I stopped him.

"Don't go alone."

He looked at me.

"Adrian wants me alone."

"And you think he will honor that?"

Silence.

Then he looked at me.

"You know what Daniel wanted."

My eyes filled.

"Yes."

"What?"

I whispered:

"That you come back."

For the first time...

Alessandro smiled faintly.

Not like a billionaire.

Not like a king.

Like a man who finally understood he had something worth returning to.

But across the city...

Adrian watched the security footage.

Emma sat quietly in the room.

Holding Button.

Adrian looked at the screen.

"Tomorrow..."

He whispered.

"The Moretti name ends."

A pause.

"And the Bellini legacy begins."

But Adrian did not understand one thing.

He thought Emma was the key to controlling the empire.

He was wrong.

May you like

Emma was the reason the empire would finally be saved.
