Chapter 3 – The Secret Inside the Closet

Chapter 3 – The Secret Inside the Closet

The room changed the moment my name appeared on that document.

Not Vanessa's.

Not Alessandro's.

Mine.

A few seconds earlier, I had been the woman who accidentally exposed a lie.

The housekeeper.

The servant.

The invisible person who had spoken one dangerous truth.

But now...

I was the question everyone wanted answered.

"Elena Rodriguez."

A guest whispered my name like it belonged to someone suspicious.

Another woman leaned toward her husband.

"Why would Vanessa have her records?"

"I knew there was something strange about the maid."

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Not because they were new.

Because they were familiar.

People like me are always questioned first.

When something disappears.

When something breaks.

When something doesn't make sense.

The person with the least power becomes the easiest explanation.

Emma felt the tension before she understood it.

She wrapped her arms around my leg.

"Mama..."

Her voice trembled.

"Are we in trouble?"

I looked down at her.

And that was the only thing keeping me standing.

"No, sweetheart."

But inside...

I was terrified.

Alessandro stared at the document in his hand.

His face revealed nothing.

That was what made him frightening.

Everyone else reacted with emotion.

Anger.

Shock.

Fear.

Alessandro became still.

"Marco."

"Yes, sir."

"Explain."

Marco stepped forward.

"The file was found in Miss Cole's private safe."

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"That proves nothing."

Her voice had returned.

Smooth.

Controlled.

"Anyone could have put it there."

Alessandro didn't look at her.

"Continue."

Marco nodded.

"The documents appear to be copies."

"Someone created a false medical history."

My stomach tightened.

"Why would someone use my name?"

I asked quietly.

Nobody answered.

Vanessa did.

"Maybe because she wanted attention."

I looked at her.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Excuse me?"

She sighed.

A performance of disappointment.

"Elena, don't pretend."

"Pretend what?"

She stepped closer.

Not enough to seem aggressive.

Just enough to make sure everyone could hear.

"Everyone knows you've always been close to Alessandro."

The room became uncomfortable.

I felt heat rise in my face.

"That's not true."

Vanessa smiled.

"Isn't it?"

She turned toward the guests.

"She works in his home."

"She sees him every day."

"She knows his habits."

"His schedule."

"His private life."

Every sentence was designed to sound reasonable.

That was what made it dangerous.

"She has access."

Vanessa whispered.

"She has opportunity."

I wanted to defend myself.

I wanted to scream.

But then I looked at Emma.

And I remembered something.

People who want to destroy you often want you angry.

Because anger makes you careless.

So I stayed silent.

Alessandro noticed.

"Elena."

His voice cut through the room.

"Look at me."

I did.

"Did you create these documents?"

The question hurt.

Even though I knew he had to ask.

"No."

"Did you know Vanessa had them?"

"No."

"Did you ever enter her private safe?"

"No."

His eyes remained on mine.

Searching.

Then he nodded once.

"I believe you."

The ballroom went silent.

Vanessa looked shocked.

"What?"

Alessandro finally turned toward her.

"I said I believe her."

"But you don't even know—"

"I know enough."

That was the first time I saw Vanessa lose control.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But the mask slipped.

Because she had expected him to doubt me.

She had expected him to see me as disposable.

She had made one mistake.

She underestimated what Alessandro Moretti respected.

Truth.

"Search the closet again."

Alessandro ordered.

Vanessa froze.

"What?"

"The closet."

His eyes became colder.

"The place where my housekeeper found the pregnancy prosthetic."

Marco nodded.

Security returned to the east wing.

Everyone waited.

The next ten minutes felt longer than the entire evening.

Nobody talked.

Nobody ate.

Nobody celebrated.

The engagement party had become an investigation.

Finally...

The doors opened.

The security officers returned.

This time...

They were carrying more.

A second box.

A black suitcase.

And several sealed envelopes.

Vanessa whispered:

"No."

It was barely audible.

But Alessandro heard.

"What did you say?"

She recovered.

"I said nothing."

Marco placed everything on the table.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

Marco opened the first envelope.

Inside was a receipt.

"Purchased six months ago."

He placed it down.

Another document.

"Private clinic payment."

Another.

"Fake ultrasound package."

Another.

"Communication records with a technician who creates synthetic medical images."

The guests were no longer whispering.

They were watching.

Watching a woman who had walked into the ballroom expecting to become the future of the Moretti family...

Slowly become the woman who had tried to steal it.

But Marco wasn't finished.

"There is more."

He opened the black suitcase.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Vanessa entering hotels.

Meeting people.

Handing envelopes.

Speaking with strangers.

Alessandro picked up one photograph.

His expression changed.

I saw it.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Betrayal.

"Who is this?"

He asked.

Marco hesitated.

"That is Thomas Vale."

The name meant something.

I could tell.

Alessandro's hand tightened around the photograph.

Thomas Vale.

The man who had been Alessandro's father's closest advisor.

The man who had helped build the Moretti empire.

The man who had disappeared from public life years ago.

"Impossible."

Alessandro whispered.

Marco looked at him.

"I'm afraid not."

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"You don't understand."

Everyone turned.

Her voice was no longer elegant.

No longer perfect.

"You think you know everything."

She looked directly at Alessandro.

"But you don't."

"Thomas wasn't using me."

A pause.

"I was using him."

The room froze.

Alessandro stared at her.

"Why?"

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"Because I needed someone powerful enough to help me."

"Help you do what?"

She looked around the ballroom.

At the empire.

The money.

The people.

Then she answered.

"Take everything from you."

A cold silence fell.

Even Vanessa seemed surprised by her own honesty.

Because once the truth begins...

Sometimes it refuses to stop.

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Why fake a pregnancy?"

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time...

There was something almost like hatred in her eyes.

"Because you were never going to marry me."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

She laughed softly.

"You wanted a wife."

She touched her chest.

"But you never loved me."

Alessandro said nothing.

"You loved your memories."

She continued.

"You loved the idea of having a family."

Her eyes moved toward Emma.

Then toward me.

"And then she appeared."

My heart stopped.

"What are you talking about?"

Vanessa smiled.

"Ask him."

She pointed at Alessandro.

"Ask him why he kept looking at your daughter."

The entire ballroom turned.

Toward me.

Toward Alessandro.

And suddenly...

A different question entered the room.

Not:

Was Vanessa lying?

But:

May you like

What was Alessandro Moretti hiding?
