Chapter 4 – The Heir Who Was Never Born

Chapter 4 – The Heir Who Was Never Born
The most frightening moment in a room full of powerful people is not when someone screams.
It is when everyone becomes silent.
Because silence means everyone is listening.
And that night...
Everyone was listening to Vanessa Cole.
"Ask him."
Her finger remained pointed toward Alessandro.
"Ask him why he looks at that child like he already knows her."
My entire body went cold.
Emma immediately grabbed my hand.
She sensed something.
Children always do.
They may not understand politics.
They may not understand betrayal.
But they understand when the people around them suddenly become dangerous.
"Mama..."
She whispered.
"Can we leave now?"
I wanted to say yes.
I wanted to pick her up and walk away from the marble floors, the diamonds, the accusations, and the people who could destroy lives with a single sentence.
But I couldn't move.
Because Vanessa had just thrown a match into a room filled with gasoline.
Alessandro stared at her.
His face was unreadable.
But his eyes...
His eyes had changed.
"Choose your next words carefully."
His voice was quiet.
Vanessa laughed.
Not nervously.
Not fearfully.
Almost proudly.
"There."
She looked at the guests.
"Did you hear that?"
She spread her hands.
"The great Alessandro Moretti is angry."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
Anger from Alessandro Moretti was not something people survived easily.
But Vanessa continued.
Because desperate people often become fearless.
"For three years, I watched him."
She looked at Alessandro.
"I watched him pretend he didn't care about anyone."
Her voice became sharper.
"But then a maid walks into his house with a child..."
She looked at Emma.
"And suddenly the man who never bends..."
"Starts smiling."
My heart tightened.
Because she wasn't completely wrong.
I had noticed it too.
The first time Emma dropped a cookie in Alessandro's office...
Everyone expected him to be furious.
Instead, he picked it up.
Placed it carefully on a napkin.
And asked her:
"Is this still good?"
Emma had looked at him seriously.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because it has sadness."
Alessandro had actually laughed.
A real laugh.
The first one I had ever heard.
Vanessa noticed.
Of course she did.
She noticed everything.
"You wanted a family."
She whispered.
"But you never wanted me."
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
"Enough."
"No."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"For once, you are going to listen."
The room held its breath.
"You think I wanted a fake baby because I wanted money?"
She smiled.
"Everyone assumes that."
She touched her stomach.
The same stomach she had used to deceive hundreds of people.
"But you know what the worst part is?"
Nobody answered.
"I actually believed you would love me if I gave you what you wanted."
The words surprised even me.
Because beneath all the lies...
There was pain.
But pain did not excuse cruelty.
Alessandro looked at her.
"You manipulated an entire room."
"You created fake medical records."
"You used a child to attack my employee."
His voice became colder.
"You don't get to call yourself a victim."
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The part everyone loves about you."
She smiled bitterly.
"The judgment."
She turned toward the guests.
"Do you know why I needed a child?"
No one answered.
"Because Alessandro Moretti doesn't give anyone power."
She looked back at him.
"He gives it to blood."
The room became quiet.
And suddenly everyone understood.
The Moretti empire had one weakness.
Inheritance.
For generations, the family had been controlled by one idea:
The bloodline continues.
The name survives.
The heir inherits.
Vanessa wasn't just creating a baby.
She was creating a future.
A future where she was untouchable.
"If I carried your son..."
She whispered.
"I would become the mother of the next Moretti."
Her eyes hardened.
"No one could remove me."
Alessandro said nothing.
Because she had finally admitted the truth.
The baby was never about love.
It was about power.
Marco stepped forward.
"Sir."
Alessandro looked at him.
"The financial records."
Marco handed him another folder.
"Recovered from the suitcase."
Alessandro opened it.
Inside were bank transfers.
Payments.
Contracts.
His expression darkened.
"Explain."
Marco pointed at the documents.
"Miss Cole received payments from several offshore accounts."
"How much?"
A pause.
"Over eight million dollars."
The room exploded.
Eight million.
Not a desperate woman making one mistake.
A calculated operation.
Vanessa didn't flinch.
Because she knew something.
The worst lies are the ones that contain a piece of truth.
"Yes."
She admitted.
"I took money."
A shocked whisper moved through the crowd.
"But not because I wanted to destroy you."
Alessandro stared at her.
"Then why?"
She looked at him.
"Because I knew something you didn't."
A pause.
"Someone was already planning to destroy you."
The ballroom became silent again.
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"You're asking the wrong question."
"What question should I ask?"
She looked toward me.
Then toward Emma.
And my blood froze.
"Ask why Daniel Rodriguez was killed."
Everything stopped.
My breath disappeared.
Daniel.
My husband.
The man I buried three years ago.
The man everyone told me to forget.
Alessandro looked at me.
Confusion crossed his face.
"Daniel?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes."
She looked around the ballroom.
"The dead husband of your housekeeper."
Her voice became a whisper.
"The man who discovered what the Moretti family was hiding."
My hands began shaking.
"No."
I whispered.
I didn't want to hear more.
I didn't want Daniel's name dragged into this.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
"Your fiancé was never the only thing I wanted."
She looked at Alessandro.
"The Moretti empire has been built on a secret."
A pause.
"And Daniel found it."
Alessandro's face changed.
Because something about that statement reached somewhere deep.
Something he remembered.
"How do you know about Daniel?"
he asked.
Vanessa smiled.
"Because the person who hired me..."
She stepped closer.
"...was the same person who made sure he never spoke."
A chill passed through the room.
Alessandro's voice dropped.
"Who?"
Vanessa looked at the chandelier above them.
Almost like she was enjoying the final moment before everything collapsed.
Then she said:
"Someone inside your family."
The ballroom erupted.
But Alessandro didn't react.
He simply stood there.
Still.
Silent.
Dangerous.
Because for the first time that night...
The fake pregnancy didn't matter anymore.
The missing heir didn't matter.
Vanessa Cole was no longer just a liar.
She was a witness.
And somewhere inside the Moretti family...
There was a traitor.
May you like
A traitor who had already killed once.
