Chapter 5 – The Maid Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 5 – The Maid Who Knew Too Much

The strangest thing about secrets is that they do not disappear when they are buried.

They wait.

They grow roots.

And eventually...

They push their way back into the light.

The ballroom had changed.

An hour ago, it had been filled with celebration.

People had arrived wearing diamonds and expensive suits, ready to witness the beginning of a new Moretti generation.

Now...

Nobody was talking about an engagement.

Nobody was talking about a baby.

Nobody was congratulating Vanessa Cole.

They were talking about Daniel Rodriguez.

My husband.

A man who had been dead for three years.

I stood frozen beside Emma, trying to understand how my quiet life had suddenly become connected to one of the most powerful families in the country.

Daniel was supposed to be gone.

That was what everyone told me.

A construction accident.

A tragic mistake.

A husband lost too young.

But now Vanessa was standing in the middle of Alessandro Moretti's mansion claiming Daniel had discovered something.

Something worth killing for.

And the worst part?

I believed her.

Because deep down...

I had never believed the official story.

Three years earlier

The night Daniel died, it rained.

Almost exactly like tonight.

I remembered standing in the hospital hallway.

The smell of disinfectant.

The sound of machines.

The doctor who couldn't look me in the eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Two words that destroy a person's entire future.

They told me Daniel fell from scaffolding.

They told me it was quick.

They told me he didn't suffer.

But Daniel was careful.

Painfully careful.

He checked every safety harness twice.

He complained when coworkers ignored regulations.

He wrote everything down.

The last conversation we had...

Was not about work.

It was about Emma.

She was only a few months old.

He had held her in his arms and whispered:

"Promise me something."

I laughed.

"That sounds serious."

"It is."

"What?"

"Never teach her to stay quiet just because powerful people tell her to."

At the time...

I thought he was just being Daniel.

Idealistic.

Stubborn.

Impossible.

Now...

I wondered if he knew he was saying goodbye.

"Elena."

Alessandro's voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

Everyone was still watching.

But Alessandro wasn't looking at me like the others.

Not with suspicion.

Not with curiosity.

With concern.

"Are you okay?"

I almost laughed.

Was I okay?

My dead husband's name had just become the center of a conspiracy involving billionaires, fake pregnancies, and murder.

"No."

I answered honestly.

For some reason...

That honesty seemed to surprise him.

Most people lied to Alessandro Moretti.

They told him what they thought he wanted to hear.

I didn't.

"No."

I repeated.

"My husband is dead because someone wanted him silent."

My voice shook.

"But I don't know why."

Alessandro looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

"Did Daniel ever mention my family?"

I hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

His eyes sharpened.

"Elena."

I looked down.

There was something I had never told anyone.

Not because I wanted to hide it.

Because I was afraid.

"Two weeks before he died..."

I whispered.

"Daniel came home angry."

The room became quiet.

"He said he had found something."

"What?"

Alessandro asked.

"I don't know."

That surprised him.

"He wouldn't tell me."

"Why?"

I swallowed.

"Because he said if I knew..."

I looked at Emma.

"...then someone could use me to get to her."

Silence.

Even Vanessa stopped smiling.

Alessandro stepped closer.

"What exactly did he say?"

I closed my eyes.

Trying to remember.

His voice.

His expression.

That night.

"He said..."

I took a breath.

"He said, 'Elena, if anything happens to me, don't trust anyone who says they are protecting the Moretti name.'"

The entire room went still.

Because that sentence meant something.

Something terrible.

Alessandro's face changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

"You never told anyone this?"

"No."

"Not the police?"

I shook my head.

"The police said it was an accident."

A bitter smile touched my lips.

"And when powerful people decide something is an accident..."

I looked around the mansion.

"People stop asking questions."

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could deny it.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Now you understand."

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

But strangely calmer.

"I wasn't the only one lying."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Careful."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You need to hear this."

She walked slowly toward the center of the ballroom.

"The Moretti empire is not built on success."

A pause.

"It's built on people who disappeared."

Several guests looked uncomfortable.

"You think your father built everything through intelligence and ambition?"

She laughed softly.

"He built it by making sure certain people never had the chance to expose him."

Alessandro's eyes turned cold.

"Do not speak about my father."

Vanessa smiled.

"Why?"

"Because he is dead?"

The room froze.

"Because dead men cannot defend themselves?"

Alessandro took one step forward.

And everyone immediately understood the danger.

But Vanessa continued.

"Your father wasn't the only one."

A pause.

"Daniel wasn't the first."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

Vanessa looked at me.

"He found records."

"What records?"

I whispered.

"Payments."

She looked at Alessandro.

"People who were paid to disappear."

The room went silent.

Then...

A sound.

A small sound.

Emma.

My daughter tugged on my sleeve.

"Mama."

I looked down.

Her eyes were fixed on something behind Vanessa.

A painting.

On the wall.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

She pointed.

"The scary man."

Everyone turned.

The portrait showed an older man.

Cold eyes.

Perfect suit.

A powerful presence.

Alessandro went completely still.

Because he knew the painting.

His father.

"What did you say?"

he asked softly.

Emma hid behind me.

"The scary man."

She pointed again.

"He was in Daddy's picture."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Alessandro looked at me.

"You have a picture of my father?"

I shook my head.

"No."

But Emma continued.

"The one Daddy kept."

Nobody moved.

Because now the impossible question existed.

How did Daniel Rodriguez...

A construction worker...

A man with no connection to the Moretti family...

Have a picture of Alessandro's father?

Marco immediately spoke.

"Sir."

Everyone turned.

He was holding a tablet.

"Security found something else."

Alessandro looked at him.

"What?"

Marco swallowed.

"The mansion cameras."

A pause.

"They show Miss Cole entering your private office six months ago."

Vanessa's face changed.

"And she wasn't alone."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Who was with her?"

Marco looked at the screen.

Then answered:

"Daniel Rodriguez."

The room exploded.

I stopped breathing.

Because that was impossible.

Daniel had been dead for three years.

But the footage...

Was dated six months ago.

Alessandro looked at the screen.

Then at me.

And for the first time...

The impossible became the only explanation.

My husband had been hiding something.

Something that connected him to the Moretti family.

May you like

Something that could destroy everything.
