Chapter 2 – The Woman Behind the Smile

Chapter 2 – The Woman Behind the Smile
The most dangerous people are not always the ones who raise their voices.
Sometimes...
They are the ones who smile while they destroy you.
Vanessa Cole had mastered that smile.
I had seen it hundreds of times.
At charity dinners.
At corporate events.
When photographers arrived.
When important guests entered the mansion.
It was the smile of a woman who knew exactly what people wanted to see.
Grace.
Elegance.
Kindness.
But that night...
Standing beneath the crystal chandeliers with three hundred witnesses watching her world collapse...
The smile became something else.
A weapon.
"Alessandro."
Vanessa spoke softly.
Almost lovingly.
"You cannot actually believe this."
She looked around the ballroom.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the people who had come to celebrate her future.
"Look at what is happening."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Your employee has humiliated me in front of everyone."
It was brilliant.
I hated that I had to admit it.
She didn't scream.
She didn't panic.
She didn't deny too quickly.
She made herself the victim.
And for a moment...
Some people believed her.
Because people like Vanessa knew something important.
The world often believes the person who looks the most hurt.
Not the person who was actually harmed.
I held Emma tighter.
She was getting tired.
Her fever made her cheeks pink.
She whispered:
"Mama..."
"Can we go home?"
That question broke my heart.
Because home was a small apartment with peeling paint and a broken heater.
But to Emma...
It was safe.
It was where nobody looked at her like she didn't belong.
I kissed her hair.
"Soon, baby."
Alessandro heard.
His eyes moved toward us.
For a moment, his expression changed.
Then he turned back to Vanessa.
"Where is the box?"
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Vanessa blinked.
"What?"
"The pregnancy prosthetic."
"I want to see it."
A nervous silence spread.
"You are actually investigating this?"
Vanessa asked.
The hurt in her voice was almost convincing.
Almost.
Alessandro stared at her.
"Yes."
One word.
No explanation.
No apology.
That was Alessandro Moretti.
He didn't argue with emotions.
He followed facts.
Marco approached.
"Sir."
"Security has located the item."
The room shifted.
Everyone suddenly wanted to see.
Proof was more powerful than rumors.
The elevator doors opened.
Two female security officers walked out carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside...
Was the box.
White.
Elegant.
With small golden flowers printed across the lid.
Emma immediately pointed.
"That's it."
Her tiny voice echoed.
"The flower pillow."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Only briefly.
But I saw it.
A moment of fear.
Alessandro saw it too.
Marco placed the box on the table.
"Found behind several garment bags in Miss Cole's private closet."
Vanessa immediately responded.
"I put it there because I was planning a surprise."
Nobody spoke.
"A surprise?"
Alessandro asked.
She nodded quickly.
"Yes."
"For you."
He looked at the box.
Then at her.
"What kind of surprise requires pretending to be pregnant?"
The question landed harder than any accusation.
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
"I was scared."
Her voice became softer.
"There are things you don't understand."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
"Then explain."
She looked at him.
And for the first time...
I saw something underneath the perfect image.
Desperation.
"I thought I was losing you."
The room went quiet.
"You became distant."
She continued.
"Your work consumed you."
"Your father."
"Your empire."
"Your enemies."
"Everything mattered more than me."
A few guests looked sympathetic.
Because loneliness was easier to understand than manipulation.
Then she touched her stomach.
"I wanted you to choose me."
That sentence almost worked.
Almost.
Because it sounded human.
Until Alessandro asked:
"How long?"
Vanessa froze.
"What?"
"How long have you been lying?"
The question changed the atmosphere.
Because he wasn't asking if she lied.
He already knew.
He was asking how deep it went.
Vanessa looked away.
That was her answer.
Alessandro turned toward Marco.
"Search everything."
Vanessa's face hardened.
"You don't trust me."
"No."
The answer came immediately.
The entire ballroom went silent.
"I don't."
For the first time...
Vanessa looked small.
Not innocent.
Not helpless.
Small.
Security moved through the east wing.
The guests waited.
Some whispered.
Some watched Vanessa.
Some watched me.
I hated that.
The attention.
The judgment.
The feeling that my entire life had become entertainment.
Then Alessandro approached me.
"Elena."
I looked up.
"Yes, sir?"
His expression softened slightly.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
I looked down.
Because the answer was embarrassing.
Because the truth was simple.
"Because I thought you wouldn't believe me."
Something changed in his eyes.
"Why?"
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because he genuinely didn't understand.
"Because she is Vanessa Cole."
I looked around the ballroom.
"She belongs here."
I looked at myself.
"I don't."
The silence between us was heavy.
Then Alessandro said something I never expected.
"That is not an answer."
I looked at him.
"The truth doesn't become less true because of someone's last name."
Nobody had ever said that to me before.
Before I could respond...
Marco returned.
His expression was different.
Serious.
"Sir."
Alessandro immediately understood.
"What did you find?"
Marco glanced at Vanessa.
Then back at Alessandro.
"More than the prosthetic."
The room became silent.
"What else?"
Marco handed him a folder.
"Medical documents."
Vanessa's face changed.
"That is private."
Her voice cracked.
Marco continued.
"Fake medical records."
A wave of shock moved through the guests.
"Hospital appointment confirmations."
"Ultrasound images."
"Doctor signatures."
Alessandro opened the folder.
He looked through every page.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Then he stopped.
"What?"
Marco asked.
Alessandro didn't answer immediately.
Because one document had caught his attention.
A fertility clinic report.
But not Vanessa's.
Someone else's name was written on it.
A woman's name.
A woman who had no reason to be connected to this.
Elena Rodriguez.
My name.
My blood went cold.
"I don't understand."
I whispered.
Alessandro looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
And for the first time that night...
His anger was no longer controlled.
"Why does Vanessa Cole have a medical file using my housekeeper's identity?"
The ballroom erupted.
Everyone looked at me.
Vanessa smiled.
Not the frightened smile from before.
Not the broken smile.
A different one.
The smile of someone who believed she had just found a way to destroy me.
"Now..."
She whispered.
"Maybe they should investigate the maid."
And I realized...
The fake pregnancy was never the real plan.
It was only the beginning.
Because Vanessa Cole had not just tried to steal Alessandro's future.
May you like
She had prepared to steal mine.
