Chapter 1: The Daughter He Never Knew

Chapter 1: The Daughter He Never Knew
The question remained suspended between them.
“Why did you never tell me she was my daughter?”
For three years, Marisol had imagined this moment.
She imagined Diego discovering the truth.
She imagined his anger.
His disappointment.
The pain in his eyes.
But no imagination could prepare her for the reality.
Because standing in front of her was not just Diego Villaseñor.
Not the billionaire.
Not the powerful businessman whose name appeared on buildings across Mexico.
It was the man she once loved.
The man who held her hand when she was afraid.
The man who promised her they would build a future together.
The man she believed had abandoned her.
And now he was looking at the little girl she had protected with everything she had.
Valentina.
Their daughter.
Marisol opened her mouth.
But no words came.
“Marisol.”
Diego’s voice was quieter this time.
Not angry.
Almost broken.
“Answer me.”
Valentina stood between them, holding the golden button in her tiny hand.
She looked from her mother to Diego.
Confused by the tension.
Confused by the silence.
“Mommy?”
The small voice shattered Marisol’s hesitation.
She immediately pulled her daughter closer.
“I’m sorry.”
Her voice trembled.
“I’m so sorry.”
Diego stared at her.
“For three years?”
A painful laugh escaped him.
“Three years, Marisol.”
“I know.”
“You lived in my house.”
His eyes moved toward Valentina.
“My daughter lived twenty meters away from me.”
Marisol lowered her head.
“I know.”
“And every day I walked past her.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“I looked at her.”
A pause.
“I wondered why she felt familiar.”
Another pause.
“And you knew.”
Marisol closed her eyes.
Because that was the part that hurt the most.
Not his anger.
Not his questions.
The truth.
She had known.
“Yes.”
The single word changed everything.
Diego stepped back.
As if the answer physically hurt him.
“Why?”
Marisol looked at Valentina.
The little girl was still holding onto her apron.
Still afraid.
Because for three years, she had taught her daughter one thing.
Never expect anyone to stay.
“I tried to find you.”
Marisol whispered.
Diego froze.
“What?”
“I tried.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“After I found out I was pregnant, I went to your office.”
Diego stared.
“I waited outside for hours.”
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Marisol shook her head.
“It happened.”
“You never came.”
Diego frowned.
“I was there every day.”
“Not that day.”
Silence.
Marisol continued.
“The receptionist told me you didn’t want to see me.”
Diego’s expression changed.
“What?”
“She told me you were busy.”
A tear rolled down Marisol’s cheek.
“She told me you had moved on.”
Diego’s jaw tightened.
“Who?”
Marisol hesitated.
“Camila.”
The name hit him instantly.
Camila Reyes.
His former executive assistant.
The woman who worked closest to him during that period.
“No.”
Diego shook his head.
“Camila would never—”
He stopped.
Because suddenly memories started connecting.
The strange way Camila avoided certain conversations.
The way she insisted on handling his personal messages.
The way she disappeared from the company shortly after Marisol vanished.
“What else happened?”
Diego asked.
Marisol swallowed.
“When I finally reached you again…”
She looked down.
“Your phone number had changed.”
Diego said nothing.
“I went to your apartment.”
Another pause.
“Your security guard told me you had instructed him not to let me enter.”
Diego’s face hardened.
“I never gave that order.”
“I know that now.”
“But back then?”
Marisol looked at him.
“Back then, I believed you.”
The words hurt more than anger.
Because she had not hated him.
She had believed him.
She believed he chose to leave.
“What did you do?”
Diego asked softly.
“What did you do when you thought I didn't want you?”
Marisol looked at Valentina.
“I left Mexico.”
The answer shocked him.
“I went to my cousin’s house.”
“I had no money.”
“I was pregnant.”
“And I was alone.”
Diego looked at the child beside her.
“And then?”
“Then Valentina was born.”
A small smile appeared.
“The moment I held her, I knew I would do anything to protect her.”
Diego looked at the little girl.
She had his eyes.
His expression.
Even the way she tilted her head when she was confused.
Everything he missed.
Everything stolen from him.
“Why did you come here?”
He asked.
Marisol hesitated.
“Because I had nowhere else.”
The honesty hurt.
“I didn’t know this was your house when I applied.”
Diego looked surprised.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I only knew the Villaseñor name.”
“I never imagined…”
Her voice disappeared.
She never imagined she would walk back into the life of the man who broke her heart.
Before Diego could answer, footsteps echoed.
Paulina.
She stood at the top of the stairs.
Her face had lost its confidence.
She had heard everything.
“You’re lying.”
Her voice cut through the hallway.
Everyone turned.
Paulina slowly walked down.
“She’s telling you a beautiful story because she knows you’re emotional.”
Diego stared at her.
“Paulina.”
“No.”
She pointed toward Marisol.
“She waited until she found the perfect moment.”
Marisol looked shocked.
“After three years, suddenly she remembers you are the father?”
Diego’s expression changed.
Not because he believed Paulina.
Because he realized something.
Paulina was afraid.
Very afraid.
“Leave.”
Diego said.
Paulina froze.
“What?”
“I said leave this conversation.”
“You’re choosing her?”
Diego looked at Valentina.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m choosing the truth.”
Paulina’s face darkened.
“This woman is using you.”
“No.”
Diego replied.
“She protected my daughter.”
The words struck Paulina.
“My daughter?”
Diego looked at Valentina.
For the first time, he said it without hesitation.
“My daughter.”
Valentina looked up.
“Daddy?”
The word was quiet.
Almost accidental.
But Diego heard it.
And it destroyed him.
Because for three years...
His daughter had lived in the same house.
And he never knew.
He slowly knelt.
The same way he had when he picked up the golden button.
“Can I ask you something?”
He whispered.
Valentina nodded.
“Do you know who I am?”
The little girl looked confused.
“You’re Mr. Diego.”
A painful smile appeared.
“And?”
She looked at Marisol.
Then back at him.
“Mommy said you were important.”
Diego’s heart broke.
“Did Mommy ever tell you I was your father?”
Valentina became quiet.
“No.”
“Why?”
She hugged her rabbit.
“Mommy said some people leave.”
The sentence crushed him.
Because a child should never learn that lesson so young.
Diego slowly looked up at Marisol.
“You thought I would leave her?”
Marisol cried silently.
“I thought you already did.”
And that was the truth.
The truth neither of them wanted.
Two people who loved each other had spent three years separated by a lie.
A lie someone else created.
And now that lie had finally broken.
But Diego knew something.
Finding out he had a daughter was only the beginning.
Because someone had stolen three years from him.
Someone had destroyed his relationship with Marisol.
And someone had made his daughter grow up believing her father did not want her.
Diego stood.
His expression changed.
The pain remained.
But something stronger replaced it.
Determination.
“Marisol.”
She looked at him.
“I need the complete truth.”
A pause.
“Everything.”
She nodded.
“I’ll tell you.”
Diego looked toward the staircase.
Toward Paulina.
And for the first time, his fiancée looked like she understood.
The engagement was no longer the most important thing in the mansion.
Because a secret had been revealed.
A daughter had been found.
May you like
And someone was about to lose everything trying to hide the truth.
