Chapter 3: Paulina’s Perfect Illusion

Chapter 3: Paulina’s Perfect Illusion

Paulina Robles had spent her entire life mastering one skill.

Making people believe what she wanted them to believe.

She knew how to enter a room and make everyone notice her.

She knew how to smile while hiding anger.

She knew how to cry without shedding a single real tear.

And most importantly...

She knew how to make herself look like the victim.

For years, people had admired her.

The elegant woman from one of Mexico’s most influential families.

The woman who attended charity events.

The woman who appeared on magazine covers.

The woman everyone described with the same words:

Perfect.

But perfection was only useful when nobody looked closely.

And now...

Diego Villaseñor was finally looking.

Paulina stood in the center of her bedroom, staring at the engagement ring on her finger.

The same ring that had once represented victory.

The same ring she had proudly shown to reporters.

The same ring that proved she had become the woman beside one of Mexico’s richest men.

Now it felt like evidence.

Evidence of a lie.

“You’re going to lose everything.”

The voice behind her made her turn.

Her brother, Adrian Robles, stood near the doorway.

The only person who knew how carefully she had built her entire plan.

Paulina’s eyes narrowed.

“Careful.”

Adrian smiled.

“Still pretending?”

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Of course you do.”

He walked closer.

“Diego knows about Marisol.”

Paulina looked away.

“He knows about the child.”

Silence.

Adrian continued.

“And now he knows about Camila.”

Paulina’s expression hardened.

“Camila was supposed to handle that.”

“She did.”

“Then why is Diego investigating?”

Adrian leaned against the table.

“Because you underestimated him.”

Paulina looked toward the window.

The Villaseñor mansion stretched beneath her.

The place she thought would become hers.

“He won't leave me.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“Really?”

“He loves me.”

A quiet laugh escaped him.

“No.”

Paulina turned sharply.

“He loves the woman you convinced him you were.”

The words cut.

Because deep down...

She knew.

Meanwhile, Diego was discovering another truth.

The woman he once loved had been destroyed by people around him.

But he needed more than suspicion.

He needed proof.

His attorney, Gabriel Torres, placed a folder on the desk.

“Everything points toward Paulina.”

Diego opened it.

Financial transfers.

Emails.

Communication records.

All connected.

But one thing bothered him.

“She was not the only one.”

Gabriel nodded.

“No.”

“Someone helped her.”

“Someone inside your company.”

Diego’s expression changed.

“Who?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“Your uncle.”

The room became silent.

Mateo Villaseñor.

His father's younger brother.

A man Diego trusted.

A man who had advised him since he took control of the company.

“No.”

Diego said immediately.

Gabriel looked at him.

“I know it is difficult.”

“He raised me.”

“I know.”

Diego closed the folder.

“Find the truth.”

That evening, Diego came home earlier than usual.

Valentina was sitting in the garden.

Drawing.

Diego watched her quietly.

Three years.

Three years of moments he missed.

Her first words.

Her first steps.

Her first day of school.

Her fears.

Her dreams.

All stolen.

“Daddy?”

He smiled.

“Hey, princesa.”

She looked at him carefully.

“Are you sad?”

Children noticed things adults tried to hide.

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

Diego sat beside her.

“Because I missed things.”

“What things?”

He looked at her.

“Everything.”

Valentina was quiet.

Then she took his hand.

“You’re here now.”

The simple sentence almost broke him.

Because she was right.

The past could not be changed.

But the future could.

From the balcony above...

Paulina watched.

And for the first time...

She felt something she had never felt before.

Fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing status.

Fear of losing Diego.

Because she finally understood.

Marisol was not her greatest threat.

Valentina was.

Not because the child wanted to destroy her.

But because the child represented something Paulina could never fake.

A real family.

The next morning, Paulina changed her strategy.

If she could not make Diego love her...

She would make him doubt Marisol.

She invited reporters.

She arranged interviews.

And she told a story.

A heartbreaking story.

“I tried to welcome Marisol.”

“I tried to help her.”

“But suddenly she appeared with a child and demanded a place in Diego’s life.”

The public reacted instantly.

Some believed her.

After all...

Paulina had always been perfect.

Marisol was only a former maid.

The difference was obvious.

At least...

That was what Paulina wanted everyone to think.

When Diego saw the interview, his expression became cold.

“She is doing this publicly.”

Gabriel said.

Diego nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Diego looked at the screen.

At the woman he almost married.

“Because she has nothing left except the illusion.”

That night, Paulina received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“You should have destroyed the evidence when you had the chance.”

Her face turned pale.

Because she knew exactly who sent it.

Camila.

The woman who knew everything.

The woman who could destroy her.

Paulina immediately called.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a final message appeared.

“The truth always comes back, Paulina.”

She dropped the phone.

For years, she believed she controlled the story.

But stories built on lies had one weakness.

Eventually...

Someone finds the missing pages.

And Diego Villaseñor was about to discover the chapter Paulina had spent years trying to erase.
