Chapter 8: The Woman Behind Paulina

Chapter 8: The Woman Behind Paulina

For the first time in years, Paulina Robles was afraid.

Not because she was losing money.

Not because she was losing her social status.

Not because newspapers were questioning her reputation.

She was afraid because Diego Villaseñor was no longer the man she could manipulate.

The man who once believed every word she said was gone.

Now every sentence she spoke was examined.

Every action was questioned.

Every smile was viewed as a possible weapon.

And Paulina hated it.

Because she had spent her entire life controlling the image people saw.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Perfect.

But perfection had one weakness.

It collapsed when people saw what was underneath.

“Your mistake was thinking Diego would never investigate.”

The voice behind her made Paulina turn.

A woman stood near the window of the private apartment overlooking Mexico City.

Sophia Valdés.

The woman who had been behind the scenes since the beginning.

The woman who knew how to destroy people without ever appearing in the room.

Paulina’s expression hardened.

“You said everything was handled.”

Sophia calmly poured herself a glass of wine.

“It was.”

“No.”

Paulina stepped closer.

“It wasn’t.”

Sophia looked at her.

“Because you became emotional.”

The words irritated Paulina.

“I did everything you asked.”

“Almost.”

Sophia smiled.

“You forgot one thing.”

“What?”

“People protect what they love.”

A pause.

“Diego loves that child.”

Paulina looked away.

“I didn't know she existed.”

Sophia raised an eyebrow.

“You knew enough.”

The truth was something Paulina had spent years hiding.

She did not discover Marisol by accident.

She searched for her.

She knew about Diego’s past.

She knew there had been another woman.

She knew there had been a possibility of a child.

And instead of walking away...

She decided to erase the problem.

Three years earlier...

Paulina had met Camila through a mutual connection.

At the time, Diego was emotionally distant.

Successful.

Powerful.

But lonely.

The perfect target.

Camila told her everything.

About Marisol.

About their relationship.

About the pregnancy.

And about Diego’s family refusing to accept someone outside their world.

Paulina saw an opportunity.

Not love.

Opportunity.

“You promised me Diego would never know.”

Paulina whispered.

Sophia smiled.

“And he didn’t.”

“Until now.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But that does not mean we lost.”

Paulina looked confused.

“What are you saying?”

Sophia leaned forward.

“Diego believes DNA makes a family.”

A cold smile.

“Make him question everything else.”

Meanwhile, inside the Villaseñor mansion...

Diego sat with his lawyers.

The custody case had officially begun.

Gabriel placed documents on the table.

“Paulina’s argument is stronger than expected.”

Diego frowned.

“Why?”

“She has evidence that Marisol concealed Valentina.”

Diego became silent.

Because that was the one thing he could not defend.

Not completely.

“She made a mistake.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.”

“But courts don't only look at intentions.”

“They look at actions.”

Diego looked through the window.

Valentina was outside playing.

Laughing.

Happy.

The sound reminded him what was at stake.

“I won't let them take her.”

Gabriel studied him.

“Then we need to know everything.”

“Everything about Paulina.”

That same evening, Marisol found Diego in his office.

“You regret it.”

He turned.

“What?”

“Finding out.”

The sadness in her voice surprised him.

“You regret knowing.”

Diego walked toward her.

“No.”

“Then why do you look like that?”

Because he was torn.

Because he loved his daughter.

Because he loved Marisol.

But because part of him still hurt.

“You should have trusted me.”

The words came quietly.

Marisol looked down.

“I know.”

“I would have chosen you.”

“I know.”

“I would have protected you.”

“I know.”

The repetition broke her.

“Then why didn't you?”

Marisol finally looked at him.

“Because someone convinced me you didn't want me.”

A pause.

“And because I was young.”

“I was alone.”

“And I was terrified.”

Diego's anger softened.

Not disappeared.

But softened.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

Gabriel.

His voice was urgent.

“We found something.”

Diego stood.

“What?”

“Information about Sophia Valdés.”

The name meant nothing.

Until Gabriel continued.

“She was the person who financed Camila after she left.”

Diego froze.

“What?”

“And Diego…”

“Yes?”

“She also has a connection to Paulina’s family.”

“How?”

A pause.

“She is Paulina’s biological mother.”

The room went silent.

Marisol looked at Diego.

Diego stared ahead.

The woman behind Paulina was finally revealed.

But the discovery created an even bigger question.

Why would a mother help her daughter destroy another family?

The answer came hours later.

When Gabriel uncovered one final document.

A business agreement.

Signed years before.

Between Sophia Valdés...

And Mateo Villaseñor.

The same uncle Diego had trusted.

The conspiracy was larger than anyone imagined.

Paulina was not the beginning.

She was only the face.

Behind her was a network of people who had spent years controlling Diego’s life.

And now Diego finally understood.

The woman who stole the truth was not acting alone.

May you like

She had an entire army behind her.
