Chapter 10: The Fight for Valentina

Chapter 10: The Fight for Valentina
The courtroom was not built for children.
It was built for arguments.
For accusations.
For evidence.
For adults fighting over things they believed they owned.
But that morning, when Diego Villaseñor walked into the family court, he carried only one thought.
Valentina was not something to win.
She was his daughter.
A little girl who had already lost too much.
And he refused to let adults take anything else from her.
The media surrounded the courthouse.
Cameras flashed.
Reporters shouted questions.
“Mr. Villaseñor, did you hide your daughter from the public?”
“Is Marisol an unfit mother?”
“Will Paulina Robles receive custody?”
Diego ignored every question.
His hand remained around Valentina’s small backpack.
Because inside was her favorite stuffed rabbit.
The only thing he cared about.
Behind him, Marisol walked quietly.
She looked exhausted.
Not because she was afraid of losing.
Because she knew the truth was complicated.
She had protected Valentina.
But she had also hidden a father from his child.
And Paulina was using that mistake as a weapon.
Inside the courtroom, Paulina appeared completely different.
Elegant.
Calm.
Controlled.
The perfect woman.
The woman everyone wanted to believe.
Her lawyer stood beside her.
“Your Honor, this case is not about revenge.”
He looked toward Diego.
“It is about protecting a child.”
Diego's jaw tightened.
He already knew what was coming.
“Mr. Villaseñor is a powerful businessman.”
The lawyer continued.
“He has influence.”
“He has money.”
“He has resources.”
“But wealth does not automatically make someone a good parent.”
The courtroom became silent.
Then he turned toward Marisol.
“And neither does love.”
A painful sentence.
Because everyone understood the accusation.
“Ms. Marisol concealed the existence of this child for three years.”
“She made every decision without the father.”
“She denied him the opportunity to raise his daughter.”
Marisol lowered her eyes.
The words hurt because they were partly true.
Diego looked at her.
For a moment, he remembered the woman who had carried their daughter alone.
The woman who worked every day.
The woman who slept beside a child instead of living comfortably.
He knew mistakes existed.
But he also knew cruelty.
And Paulina's plan was cruelty.
Then Diego's lawyer stood.
“Your Honor.”
He placed a document on the table.
“The defense acknowledges that Ms. Marisol made a serious mistake.”
Marisol looked surprised.
Diego had chosen honesty.
Not excuses.
“But this case ignores the reason behind that mistake.”
He turned toward the evidence.
“For three years, Ms. Marisol raised this child alone.”
“She provided food.”
“She provided shelter.”
“She provided emotional stability.”
“And most importantly…”
He paused.
“She protected her.”
The lawyer submitted photographs.
Valentina at school.
Valentina at the hospital where Marisol worked.
Valentina drawing pictures of her mother.
A child's life.
Not a scandal.
Then came the moment Paulina had been waiting for.
The witness.
Camila.
The courtroom shifted.
Everyone recognized the name.
The woman connected to the past.
The woman who disappeared.
Paulina smiled slightly.
She believed Camila would destroy Marisol.
But she was wrong.
Camila sat down.
The judge looked at her.
“Do you swear to tell the truth?”
Camila hesitated.
Then answered:
“Yes.”
The first question came.
“Did you know about Valentina before Mr. Villaseñor?”
Camila swallowed.
“Yes.”
A wave moved through the courtroom.
Paulina looked satisfied.
“Did Ms. Marisol intentionally hide the child?”
Everyone waited.
Camila looked toward Paulina.
Then toward Diego.
Then she said:
“No.”
The courtroom froze.
Paulina's expression changed.
“What?”
The judge struck the table.
“Silence.”
Camila continued.
“She wanted to tell him.”
“She tried.”
“Many times.”
Diego closed his eyes.
Because he already knew.
But hearing someone else confirm it hurt.
“Why didn't she?”
The lawyer asked.
Camila looked down.
“Because we stopped her.”
Silence.
The courtroom erupted.
Paulina stood.
“She's lying!”
The judge ordered silence.
But it was too late.
The illusion had cracked.
“Who stopped her?”
The lawyer asked.
Camila's voice trembled.
“Mateo Villaseñor.”
A gasp moved through the courtroom.
“And who ordered it?”
Camila looked at Paulina.
Everyone followed her gaze.
Paulina's face turned pale.
“Paulina Robles.”
The courtroom went silent.
For the first time...
Paulina had no perfect answer.
No prepared speech.
No carefully designed expression.
Only fear.
But then she did something unexpected.
She smiled.
A small, cold smile.
Because she still had one final card.
A secret nobody knew.
A secret about Valentina's birth.
A secret she had kept hidden for years.
She leaned toward her lawyer and whispered:
“Now.”
The lawyer nodded.
And opened a new file.
A file that made Diego's blood run cold.
Because written on the first page was one sentence:
“Biological paternity may not be the only truth.”
Everyone turned toward Diego.
And for the first time since discovering his daughter...
He felt uncertain.
May you like
Because Paulina was about to reveal something that could change everything.
