CHAPTER 11: THE FALL OF THE TRAITOR

CHAPTER 11: THE FALL OF THE TRAITOR
The Ríos mansion had never felt so silent.
Not after Sofia's funeral.
Not after Mateo stopped speaking.
Not even after the attempted kidnapping.
This silence was different.
It was the silence that came before a family destroyed itself.
Alejandro stood in the security control room, watching dozens of surveillance screens.
Every hallway.
Every entrance.
Every garden.
Every face.
For the first time in his life, he no longer trusted the walls around him.
Because walls could hide traitors.
Mateo refused to let go of Valeria's hand.
Even while the doctor checked him for injuries, his tiny fingers remained wrapped around hers.
The physician smiled gently.
"Physically, he's fine."
Alejandro exhaled for what felt like the first time all morning.
"But emotionally..."
The doctor glanced at Mateo.
"He needs stability."
Alejandro looked toward Valeria.
He already knew.
Gabriel entered the room carrying a thick folder.
"The kidnapper survived surgery."
Alejandro's expression hardened.
"When can I question him?"
"Soon."
Gabriel hesitated.
"But there's something else."
He placed several photographs on the table.
"They weren't targeting Mateo."
Alejandro frowned.
"What?"
"The operation was designed to force Valeria out of the mansion."
Every photograph showed the same thing.
One kidnapper watching Valeria.
Another watching Alejandro.
Only one watching Mateo.
Gabriel pointed to a map of the estate.
"The child was bait."
Alejandro's jaw tightened.
"They wanted Valeria."
Across the room, Valeria overheard the conversation.
She slowly lowered her eyes.
"So..."
She whispered.
"This is all because of me."
Alejandro immediately turned.
"No."
"It is."
She forced herself to meet his gaze.
"If I leave..."
"You won't."
She blinked.
"They'll stop."
Alejandro walked toward her.
"No."
"They'll simply choose another victim."
That afternoon, the captured kidnapper finally regained consciousness.
He was transferred to a heavily guarded private medical suite.
Alejandro entered alone.
No lawyers.
No bodyguards.
Only Gabriel waited outside the door.
The prisoner's arm was heavily bandaged.
Yet he smiled when he saw Alejandro.
"I wondered how long you'd take."
Alejandro pulled up a chair.
"You know why I'm here."
The man nodded.
"You want names."
"I want the truth."
The prisoner laughed quietly.
"The truth is expensive."
Alejandro leaned forward.
"I've paid more."
For several minutes, neither man spoke.
Finally, the prisoner asked,
"Did Sofia ever tell you why she visited Saint María Hospital so often?"
Alejandro's eyes narrowed.
"No."
"Because she wasn't sick."
Silence.
"She was meeting someone."
"Valeria's mother."
The words echoed through the room.
Alejandro remained perfectly still.
"They discovered financial records."
The prisoner continued.
"Money disappearing."
"Weapons shipments."
"Secret accounts."
"They thought someone inside the Ríos organization was building a second empire."
Alejandro asked only one question.
"Who?"
The prisoner smiled.
"I'll tell you."
He paused.
"If I survive."
Meanwhile, Ricardo Ríos sat inside his private estate.
His phone rang.
The moment he answered, he knew something had gone wrong.
"They captured him."
Ricardo closed his eyes.
"Can he talk?"
"We don't know."
He stood and walked toward the window.
"Then make sure he never does."
Back at the mansion, Gabriel rushed into Alejandro's office.
"Sir!"
Alejandro looked up.
"The prisoner..."
"What about him?"
"He was poisoned."
Within seconds, Alejandro was running.
Doctors crowded the hallway.
Security officers blocked every entrance.
The prisoner's heart monitor screamed.
By the time Alejandro entered...
It was too late.
The man was dead.
The doctor removed his gloves.
"I'm sorry."
Alejandro stared at the lifeless body.
Someone had silenced him.
Inside a guarded hospital.
Surrounded by armed officers.
That meant only one thing.
The traitor's reach extended far beyond the mansion.
Gabriel looked devastated.
"No visitor records."
"No forced entry."
"No cameras showing anyone suspicious."
Alejandro slowly looked around the room.
Then his eyes stopped on a bouquet of white lilies sitting beside the bed.
"Who sent the flowers?"
The nurse checked the card.
"There wasn't one."
Alejandro walked closer.
The scent was unusually strong.
Too strong.
He looked at the doctor.
"Test them."
Two hours later, the laboratory confirmed it.
The flowers had been coated with an odorless airborne toxin.
Not enough to affect healthy people.
But enough to kill an already wounded man.
Someone had planned everything.
Valeria sat quietly beside Mateo that evening.
The little boy was drawing again.
This time...
He drew a snake.
Long.
Black.
Hidden beneath green grass.
"What is that?" Valeria asked.
Mateo pointed.
"Bad man."
"Who?"
He looked toward the mansion.
"Hiding."
Valeria felt a chill run through her body.
Children often saw things adults ignored.
Later that night, Alejandro gathered every senior employee in the main hall.
Housekeepers.
Drivers.
Guards.
Accountants.
Gardeners.
Everyone.
More than sixty people stood silently beneath the crystal chandelier.
Alejandro walked to the center.
"I know someone here has betrayed this family."
Nobody moved.
"I don't know who."
Still silence.
"But I promise you this."
His voice echoed across the marble floor.
"I will."
Then Gabriel stepped forward carrying several sealed envelopes.
One by one, he handed them to selected employees.
Confusion spread.
Inside each envelope was the same message.
You are under investigation. Do not leave the estate.
Gasps filled the room.
Fear spread instantly.
Alejandro wasn't looking for confessions.
He was looking for reactions.
Most people appeared frightened.
Some looked offended.
One person...
Looked terrified.
Claudia's replacement, an elderly records clerk named Esteban, suddenly turned pale.
He took one step backward.
Then another.
Before anyone realized what was happening...
He ran.
Guards chased him through the west corridor.
He knocked over tables.
Smashed a window.
Reached the garage.
Almost escaped.
Almost.
Gabriel tackled him to the ground just before he reached a waiting car.
Back inside the mansion, Esteban refused to speak.
Until Alejandro placed Sofia's photograph on the table.
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
"I never wanted her to die."
Alejandro's voice became dangerously calm.
"Then why help them?"
"I didn't know!"
Esteban cried.
"They only asked me to remove documents."
"What documents?"
"The security logs."
Alejandro leaned closer.
"Who gave the order?"
Esteban closed his eyes.
Then whispered a single name.
"Ricardo."
The confession was recorded.
Signed.
Witnessed.
For the first time, Alejandro had direct evidence linking Ricardo to the conspiracy.
But Gabriel wasn't celebrating.
"Something's wrong."
Alejandro looked at him.
"What?"
Gabriel spread several maps across the table.
"Ricardo is too careful."
"What do you mean?"
"He wouldn't leave a witness alive."
Alejandro understood immediately.
"Unless..."
Gabriel finished the sentence.
"Unless he wanted us to find him."
At that exact moment, Ricardo was already gone.
His mansion stood empty.
His phones were destroyed.
His bank accounts had been emptied.
Private aircraft records showed one unexpected flight.
Destination:
Unknown.
Alejandro stared at the report.
For years, Ricardo had been one step ahead.
But now...
He was running.
And guilty men only ran for one reason.
They knew the truth was catching up.
Late that night, Mateo quietly walked into Alejandro's study.
His father looked exhausted.
Stacks of evidence covered the desk.
The little boy climbed onto Alejandro's lap without saying a word.
Alejandro wrapped an arm around him.
"What is it?"
Mateo looked up.
"Bad man gone?"
Alejandro smiled sadly.
"Not yet."
Mateo thought for a moment.
Then placed his tiny hand over Alejandro's heart.
"No angry."
Alejandro looked at his son.
"No hate."
The words were simple.
But they struck deeper than any bullet.
Sofia had once told Alejandro that revenge could consume a man until nothing remained.
Now...
Her son was teaching him the very same lesson.
Across the city, Ricardo Ríos sat inside an abandoned warehouse.
A suitcase filled with cash rested beside him.
A satellite phone rang once.
He answered immediately.
"It's done?"
The voice replied,
"No."
A pause.
"The maid is still alive."
Ricardo's face darkened.
"And Alejandro?"
"Closer than ever."
Ricardo slowly smiled.
"Good."
The man on the other end sounded confused.
"Good?"
Ricardo looked toward an old photograph of the Ríos family.
"Because he's finally walking exactly where I want him."
He hung up.
Then opened a hidden safe beneath the floor.
Inside lay a faded envelope.
Across the front, in Sofia's handwriting, were four chilling words:
The Final List.
Ricardo laughed softly.
"Come find me, nephew."
May you like
"You still have no idea who the real traitor is."
