CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The words from Mateo’s mouth changed everything.

“Don’t touch her.”

Three simple words.

Spoken by a child who had not defended anyone in two years.

Not himself.

Not his father.

Not even his own memories.

But that night…

Mateo Ríos stood in the hallway of the mansion, holding his stuffed bear tightly against his chest, staring at a person who had entered the darkness with one purpose.

To silence Valeria Gómez.

The shadow froze.

Nobody expected Mateo to speak.

Especially not like that.

The person standing outside Valeria’s room slowly turned.

For a moment, they looked at the little boy differently.

Not as a broken child.

Not as a weak child.

But as a threat.

Because Mateo had changed.

And everyone inside the Ríos mansion knew one thing.

A child who remembered…

Was dangerous.

The lights suddenly turned on.

Alejandro stood at the end of the hallway.

His expression was terrifying.

“What are you doing here?”

The person immediately stepped back.

“Sir, I was only checking—”

“Checking what?”

Silence.

Alejandro walked closer.

The entire mansion seemed to become colder.

Nobody moved when Alejandro Ríos was angry.

Not because he shouted.

Because he didn’t need to.

His calm was always more frightening.

“You entered my employee’s room.”

The person swallowed.

“I thought there was a noise.”

Alejandro looked at Mateo.

Then at Valeria’s closed door.

Then back.

“A noise?”

His voice lowered.

“At two in the morning?”

No answer.

The person apologized.

They gave excuses.

They tried to explain.

But Alejandro had already made his decision.

“Leave.”

The entire hallway went silent.

“Sir?”

“You heard me.”

“But I have worked for this family for years.”

Alejandro’s eyes hardened.

“And that is exactly why I am disappointed.”

The person lowered their head.

Then walked away.

After the hallway was empty, Alejandro looked at Mateo.

His son was still standing there.

Still protecting Valeria.

Alejandro felt something inside him break.

Because for years, he had wanted Mateo to fight.

To speak.

To react.

But he never imagined the first time would be because he wanted to protect someone else.

“Mateo.”

The little boy looked at him.

Alejandro slowly approached.

“Are you okay?”

Mateo did not answer.

But he did not run.

That alone was enough.

Alejandro crouched down.

“Thank you.”

Mateo stared at him.

“For protecting Valeria.”

The boy looked toward her door.

Then quietly said:

“She stayed.”

Alejandro’s heart tightened.

Because he understood.

To Mateo…

Staying meant everything.

The next morning, the mansion felt different.

Everyone knew something had happened.

But nobody knew exactly what.

They only knew one thing:

Mateo Ríos had spoken again.

And he had spoken for Valeria.

Alejandro called Valeria into his office.

She entered carefully.

She still felt strange being there.

A few weeks ago, she was invisible.

Now…

She was sitting across from the most feared man in the city.

“You know what happened last night?”

Valeria nodded.

“Mateo told me.”

Alejandro studied her.

“He protected you.”

She looked down.

“He was scared.”

“Of what?”

She hesitated.

“Of losing another person.”

The answer hit harder than expected.

Because Alejandro knew.

Mateo was not afraid of violence.

He was afraid of abandonment.

“I need to ask you something.”

Valeria looked up.

“Why did you come here?”

The question surprised her.

“I told you.”

“You needed money.”

“Yes.”

“For your brother.”

“Yes.”

“But why did you stay?”

Valeria was quiet.

Because the answer was not simple anymore.

At first, she stayed because of the salary.

Then because of Mateo.

Then because leaving felt impossible.

“I think…”

She paused.

“I think Mateo needed someone who didn’t look at him like a monster.”

Alejandro looked away.

Because those words were exactly what he feared.

Everyone had failed his son because everyone had been afraid.

Including him.

Then Alejandro asked the question that changed their relationship.

“Are you afraid of me?”

Valeria looked surprised.

“Why would I be?”

“Because everyone is.”

She thought for a moment.

Then answered honestly.

“Yes.”

Alejandro’s expression changed slightly.

“But not because of your power.”

“Then why?”

“Because I can see how much pain you carry.”

The room became silent.

Nobody spoke to Alejandro Ríos like that.

Nobody.

“You built walls around yourself.”

Valeria continued.

“Because you think if nobody gets close, nobody can hurt you again.”

Alejandro stared at her.

Because she was right.

And he hated that she was right.

That afternoon, Alejandro received another report.

About Valeria.

Her background.

Her family.

Her life.

The file was thin.

Too thin.

She had no criminal record.

No suspicious connections.

No hidden history.

She was exactly what she appeared to be.

A young woman trying to save her brother.

But there was one thing that caught Alejandro’s attention.

A note from the hospital.

Daniel Gómez’s surgery had been delayed twice.

Why?

Because someone had anonymously paid part of the medical costs.

Alejandro frowned.

He had not done it.

So who had?

Meanwhile, Valeria sat beside Mateo in the garden.

The little boy was drawing again.

This time, the picture was different.

No dark cars.

No screams.

No fear.

A house.

A tree.

Three people.

Valeria.

Mateo.

Alejandro.

She looked at it.

“Who are these?”

Mateo pointed.

First at himself.

Then Valeria.

Then Alejandro.

Valeria smiled.

“You made us a family?”

Mateo immediately looked away.

But he didn’t erase it.

From the balcony above, Alejandro watched.

And for the first time in years…

He imagined a future.

Not an empire.

Not power.

Not revenge.

A normal life.

A dinner where Mateo laughed.

A home where nobody was afraid.

A place where Sofia’s memory was not only pain.

But that hope lasted only a few hours.

Because that evening…

Alejandro received a message.

One picture.

One sentence.

The picture was Valeria entering the mansion.

The sentence:

“The maid knows about Sofia.”

Alejandro’s blood ran cold.

Because nobody outside the family knew about the secret room.

Nobody knew about the recording.

Nobody knew Sofia had left evidence.

Except…

Valeria.

He immediately searched for her.

He found her in the kitchen with Mateo.

Laughing.

Something he had never seen enough of.

Mateo was smiling.

A real smile.

But Alejandro could not ignore the fear growing inside him.

A question.

A terrible question.

Was Valeria truly innocent?

Or had she entered the mansion for another reason?

That night, Alejandro investigated deeper.

He checked every detail.

Her arrival.

Her employment.

Her family.

Her debts.

Everything.

And then he found something strange.

A missing piece.

A gap.

Three months before Valeria applied to work at the mansion…

She had visited the same hospital where Sofia’s old medical records were stored.

Alejandro stared at the information.

Impossible.

Why?

Why would a poor maid from Santa Catarina have any connection to Sofia Ríos?

The next morning, he confronted her.

Valeria walked into his office.

She immediately noticed his expression.

Something was wrong.

“Sit down.”

She did.

Alejandro placed a document on the table.

“You visited Santa María Hospital six months ago.”

Valeria looked at the paper.

Her face changed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Silence.

“Valeria.”

She looked at him.

“I need the truth.”

Her hands tightened.

Because she knew this moment would come.

“I went there because of my brother.”

Alejandro watched her carefully.

“Daniel’s treatment?”

She nodded.

“But that is not the only reason.”

The room became colder.

“What else?”

Valeria looked away.

And for the first time…

Alejandro saw fear in her eyes.

Not fear of him.

Fear of what she was about to reveal.

“My mother worked there.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

“My mother.”

Valeria swallowed.

“She was a nurse.”

A pause.

“And before she died…”

“She told me something.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“What?”

Valeria looked directly into his eyes.

“She told me…”

Her voice became quiet.

“That the Ríos family was not as innocent as everyone believed.”

The silence was unbearable.

Alejandro stared at her.

The woman who had saved his son.

The woman he wanted to trust.

The woman who had somehow walked into his life at the exact moment everything began falling apart.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Valeria’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because I didn’t know if it was true.”

“Then why come here?”

She whispered:

“Because I needed answers.”

Alejandro stepped back.

The woman he thought was a simple maid…

Was not simple.

She carried a secret.

A connection.

A reason.

And suddenly everything became dangerous.

That night, Mateo woke from a nightmare.

He ran through the hallway.

But this time…

He was not searching for his mother.

He was searching for Valeria.

When he found her, he grabbed her hand.

Then he looked at Alejandro.

And said the sentence that changed everything:

“Don’t let them take her.”

Alejandro looked at his son.

Then at Valeria.

Because he finally understood.

The person who had entered his mansion as a stranger…

Was now the person Mateo feared losing the most.

But somewhere in the city…

Someone watched the Ríos mansion.

Someone who knew Valeria’s mother.

Someone who knew what Sofia discovered.

Someone who knew why Valeria had been sent there.

And that person smiled.

May you like

Because the game had finally begun.

TO BE CONTINUED…
