CHAPTER 13: THE NEW RÍOS FAMILY

CHAPTER 13: THE NEW RÍOS FAMILY

The note remained on Alejandro's desk all night.

"A good father cannot save everyone."

He had read those words dozens of times.

Not because he feared the threat.

Because he understood the message behind it.

Someone wanted him to choose.

His empire...

Or his family.

Two years ago, the answer would have been simple.

Today...

It wasn't.

Just before sunrise, Alejandro walked through the silent halls of the mansion.

Every light was on.

Every security checkpoint was doubled.

Every guard had received new orders.

No one entered.

No one left.

Not until the traitor was found.

He stopped outside Mateo's bedroom.

The little boy was still asleep.

His stuffed bear rested beneath one arm.

Valeria had fallen asleep in a chair beside the bed, exhausted after another sleepless night.

A blanket covered her shoulders.

Alejandro smiled faintly.

He hadn't placed it there.

Mateo had.

The blanket was too small.

One side barely reached her shoulder.

The other dragged across the floor.

Yet somehow...

It was the warmest thing Alejandro had seen in years.

Quietly, he picked up the blanket and covered Valeria properly.

She stirred.

Opening her eyes.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I didn't mean to fall asleep."

"You stayed with him."

Alejandro looked at Mateo.

"That's all that matters."

Valeria hesitated.

"You should have someone else watch him today."

Alejandro shook his head.

"No."

"The threats are getting worse."

"I know."

She lowered her voice.

"Alejandro... they're using me to reach you."

He met her eyes.

"No."

"They're using my family to control me."

She frowned.

He continued,

"And whether you like it or not..."

He looked toward the sleeping child.

"You've become part of that family."

Valeria didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Because somewhere deep inside...

She had begun feeling the same thing.

She no longer woke each morning wondering when she would leave the mansion.

She wondered how to protect the people inside it.

Later that morning, Mateo wandered into the kitchen wearing dinosaur pajamas.

His hair pointed in every direction.

He rubbed his sleepy eyes.

"Hungry."

Doña Socorro laughed.

"That's the first thing you've said today?"

Mateo nodded seriously.

"Hungry first."

The elderly housekeeper smiled at Valeria.

"Now that's a healthy child."

Alejandro entered a few moments later.

Instead of wearing one of his expensive tailored suits...

He wore jeans and a simple blue sweater.

The kitchen staff stared.

One of the cooks whispered,

"Is that really Mr. Ríos?"

Doña Socorro smiled.

"No."

The cook looked confused.

"No?"

"The old Mr. Ríos would never dress like that."

Alejandro ignored the surprised faces.

He rolled up his sleeves.

"What's for breakfast?"

Doña Socorro blinked.

"You... want breakfast?"

"I want to make breakfast."

Silence filled the room.

"You cook?" she asked.

Alejandro smiled awkwardly.

"Sofia tried to teach me."

"And?"

"I was terrible."

Twenty minutes later...

The kitchen looked like a battlefield.

Flour covered the counter.

Eggshells littered the floor.

One pancake had somehow become completely black.

Mateo laughed so hard he nearly fell off his chair.

Valeria couldn't stop smiling.

Even Doña Socorro wiped tears of laughter from her eyes.

Alejandro held up the burned pancake.

"I think this one deserves a proper funeral."

Mateo burst into laughter.

The sound echoed through the mansion.

For years, those halls had known only grief.

Now...

They carried joy.

Upstairs, several security guards paused.

One young guard quietly asked Gabriel,

"Have you ever heard the boss laugh like that?"

Gabriel folded his arms.

"Never."

"What changed him?"

Gabriel looked toward the kitchen.

"A little boy."

He paused.

"And the woman who reminded him how to be his father."

Later that afternoon, Alejandro surprised everyone again.

He called a meeting.

Not with executives.

Not with lawyers.

With every employee in the mansion.

More than fifty people gathered in the main hall.

Housekeepers.

Drivers.

Gardeners.

Chefs.

Guards.

Office staff.

Alejandro stood before them.

"I owe all of you an apology."

Confused glances spread through the crowd.

"For years..."

He continued,

"I expected loyalty."

He looked around the room.

"But I rarely offered trust."

Silence.

"This house became a place where people obeyed."

His voice softened.

"It should have been a home."

Nobody expected those words.

Especially from Alejandro Ríos.

He looked toward Valeria.

Standing quietly near the back.

"This woman reminded me..."

He smiled faintly.

"...that respect is earned."

Not through fear.

Through kindness.

One by one...

The employees began applauding.

It started with Doña Socorro.

Then the cooks.

Then the gardeners.

Finally...

Even some of the guards joined in.

Not because Alejandro ordered them.

Because they believed him.

After the meeting, Valeria approached him.

"You didn't have to do that."

"Yes."

He looked around the mansion.

"I did."

She smiled.

"They're going to think you've become soft."

Alejandro laughed.

"Let them."

That afternoon, Gabriel interrupted the peaceful moment.

"We found another hidden room."

Alejandro's expression changed immediately.

"Where?"

"Beneath the old wine cellar."

The underground room had not appeared on any official blueprint.

Dust covered the narrow staircase.

The air smelled old.

Forgotten.

A single metal door stood at the bottom.

Gabriel forced it open.

The room was filled with boxes.

Files.

Old ledgers.

Photographs.

And dozens of surveillance tapes dating back more than twenty years.

Valeria carefully picked up one photograph.

Her breath caught.

It showed Sofia.

Standing beside...

Her mother.

The two women were smiling.

Holding coffee cups.

Like old friends.

Alejandro found a leather-bound journal inside one of the boxes.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

He slowly opened the first page.

His expression darkened.

Every entry listed names.

Payments.

Threats.

Political favors.

Disappearances.

His father's empire had been far darker than even Alejandro imagined.

Then he reached the final page.

Written in different ink.

Clearly added years later.

Only one sentence appeared.

"Never let Alejandro discover Project Phoenix."

Gabriel frowned.

"Project Phoenix?"

Alejandro slowly closed the journal.

"I've never heard of it."

Valeria looked uneasy.

"But your father believed it was important enough to hide."

At that exact moment, Mateo wandered into the cellar despite everyone's instructions to stay upstairs.

He looked around curiously.

Then pointed toward the far wall.

"There."

Everyone turned.

"What is it?" Alejandro asked.

Mateo walked toward a loose stone.

"I saw Mommy."

Silence.

Alejandro's heart skipped a beat.

"When?"

Mateo touched the wall.

"Before."

Gabriel immediately examined the stones.

One brick sounded hollow.

He pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside...

There was only one object.

A small silver key.

Attached to it was a faded tag.

PHOENIX ARCHIVE

Alejandro stared at the key.

Every clue.

Every lie.

Every betrayal.

Every attack.

They had all been leading here.

Project Phoenix.

Whatever it was...

It had been important enough for Sofia to investigate.

Important enough for Valeria's mother to die protecting.

Important enough for Ricardo to betray his own family.

And now...

It was about to change everything.

As Alejandro closed his hand around the silver key, Mateo quietly slipped his tiny hand into Valeria's.

The little boy looked up at both of them.

Then smiled.

"Daddy."

He looked at Alejandro.

"Mama Valeria."

The room fell completely silent.

Valeria's eyes filled with tears.

Alejandro looked at his son in shock.

Mateo wasn't replacing Sofia.

He was simply giving a name to the person who had made him feel safe again.

Valeria knelt in front of him.

"You'll always have one mommy."

She gently touched his cheek.

"And she'll always love you."

Mateo nodded.

Then wrapped his arms around both adults.

Alejandro slowly embraced them too.

For one brief, precious moment...

The fear disappeared.

The grief became lighter.

The mansion no longer felt like a prison.

It felt like a home.

A new family.

Not perfect.

Not complete.

But healing.

None of them noticed the tiny red light blinking inside an old ventilation grate.

A hidden camera.

Someone had been watching everything.

The embrace.

The key.

The hidden archive.

And somewhere far away, a man picked up his phone and smiled.

"So..."

he whispered.

"They finally found Phoenix."

He stood and loaded a pistol into a leather bag.

May you like

"It's time to finish what Sofia started."
