CHAPTER 6: THE CARTEL FAMILY WAR

CHAPTER 6: THE CARTEL FAMILY WAR

The Ríos mansion had always been a place where decisions were made behind closed doors.

A place where powerful men whispered.

Where secrets were buried.

Where loyalty was valued more than truth.

But after Valeria Gómez arrived…

The walls started talking.

And everyone was afraid of what they might reveal.

The emergency family meeting was called at seven in the morning.

Everyone came.

Alejandro’s relatives.

The oldest members of the Ríos organization.

The people who had helped build the empire.

The people who believed they owned a piece of his life.

They gathered around the long black table in the main hall.

A table where millions had been negotiated.

Where enemies had become allies.

Where promises had been made.

And broken.

Alejandro entered last.

Everyone immediately became silent.

Not because he demanded respect.

Because they felt something different.

The man who entered the room was not only a businessman.

Not only the head of the Ríos empire.

He was a father.

And that made him more dangerous.

His uncle, Ricardo Ríos, was the first to speak.

“You called this meeting because of a maid?”

The word was filled with disgust.

A maid.

Not a person.

Not Valeria.

Just a position.

Alejandro looked at him.

“You mean the woman who helped my son speak again?”

Ricardo leaned back.

“She is manipulating you.”

The room became tense.

Alejandro’s expression did not change.

“Explain.”

Ricardo folded his hands.

“Before she arrived, Mateo was isolated.”

“Yes.”

“Now he trusts her.”

“Yes.”

“That is not normal.”

Alejandro stared.

“Trust is not normal?”

Ricardo sighed.

“You know what I mean.”

Another family member joined.

“She came from nothing.”

A woman named Isabella Ríos.

Alejandro’s cousin.

“She has no education. No family name. No connections.”

Valeria was standing near the doorway.

She heard every word.

But she did not move.

She had spent her entire life hearing people judge her before knowing her.

This was nothing new.

“She is dangerous.”

The sentence came from Ricardo.

Alejandro’s eyes hardened.

“Careful.”

Ricardo ignored the warning.

“Your wife died because someone inside this family betrayed us.”

Silence.

“And now, months later, a woman appears.”

He looked toward Valeria.

“A woman connected to Sofia.”

Everyone turned.

Valeria’s face changed.

Because that information was supposed to be private.

Alejandro noticed.

“How do you know that?”

Nobody answered.

The silence itself was an answer.

Someone knew.

Someone had been watching.

Alejandro stood.

“You are accusing her without proof.”

Ricardo smiled slightly.

“And you are protecting her without proof.”

A pause.

“That is not like you, Alejandro.”

The words hit.

Because they were true.

Alejandro Ríos never trusted easily.

He questioned everyone.

Even his closest allies.

But with Valeria…

Something was different.

Before he could respond, Mateo appeared at the top of the stairs.

Everyone froze.

He was not supposed to be there.

He hated crowds.

He hated unfamiliar voices.

Usually, the sound of arguments made him panic.

But this time…

He walked down.

Slowly.

Until he reached Valeria.

Then he held her hand.

The room went completely silent.

Mateo.

The child who pushed away everyone.

Was choosing her.

In front of everyone.

Ricardo looked uncomfortable.

“Mateo.”

The boy immediately tightened his grip on Valeria’s hand.

A protective movement.

Alejandro noticed.

And something inside him changed.

Because his son was not weak.

He was finally learning to choose.

“Enough.”

Alejandro’s voice cut through the room.

Everyone looked at him.

“Valeria stays.”

Ricardo stared.

“You are choosing a stranger over your own family?”

Alejandro looked at Mateo.

Then at Valeria.

“No.”

A pause.

“I am choosing my son.”

The meeting ended badly.

Nobody apologized.

Nobody accepted.

They left with anger.

And anger inside the Ríos family had always been dangerous.

That afternoon, Valeria packed her things.

Alejandro found her in the small room near the service area.

“What are you doing?”

She looked up.

“Leaving.”

His expression changed.

“Why?”

She forced a smile.

“Because I know what happens when people like me become the reason powerful families fight.”

“You are not the reason.”

“I am.”

She looked around.

“This place was already broken before I arrived.”

A pause.

“I only opened the cracks.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“You think running away protects Mateo?”

Valeria looked down.

“I think staying puts him in danger.”

The answer angered him.

Not because she was wrong.

Because she was willing to sacrifice herself.

Again.

Just like everyone else who loved his son.

“You don’t get to decide that alone.”

Valeria looked surprised.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

His voice softened.

“For years, everyone made decisions about Mateo.”

He swallowed.

“Doctors.”

“Therapists.”

“Family.”

“Everyone thought they knew what was best.”

A pause.

“But nobody asked him.”

Alejandro looked toward the door.

“Until you.”

That night, Mateo had another nightmare.

But this time…

It was different.

He woke up crying.

Not screaming.

Crying.

Valeria rushed in.

Alejandro followed.

Mateo grabbed both their hands.

One in each.

And whispered:

“Stay.”

The word was almost impossible to hear.

But Alejandro heard it.

Valeria heard it.

And both of them understood.

Mateo was not asking for help.

He was asking for a family.

The next day, Alejandro made a decision.

A decision nobody expected.

He moved Valeria’s room.

Not to the servants’ area.

Closer to Mateo’s room.

The entire mansion was shocked.

Doña Socorro stared.

“Sir…”

Alejandro interrupted.

“She is not here as a servant.”

The older woman looked at him.

“Then what is she?”

Alejandro looked toward the garden.

Where Mateo and Valeria were sitting together.

“Someone my son trusts.”

But the family war had already begun.

Because while Alejandro was protecting Valeria…

Someone else was attacking her.

A story appeared online that evening.

A photograph.

Valeria entering the Ríos mansion.

The headline was brutal.

“BILLIONAIRE ALEJANDRO RÍOS REPLACES THERAPISTS WITH A YOUNG MAID.”

The comments were worse.

Gold digger.

Manipulator.

Nobody.

A woman trying to climb into power.

Valeria read the article silently.

She expected insults.

She expected judgment.

But she was not prepared for the message sent privately.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

“Your mother died because she knew too much. Leave before you suffer the same fate.”

Her hands started shaking.

For the first time since entering the mansion…

Valeria was afraid.

Not for herself.

For Mateo.

Alejandro found her sitting alone.

“What happened?”

She quickly hid the phone.

“Nothing.”

He knew immediately she was lying.

“Valeria.”

She looked at him.

Then handed him the phone.

He read the message.

And something inside him disappeared.

The calm.

The patience.

The restraint.

Because this was no longer about rumors.

No longer about family arguments.

Someone had threatened the woman who saved his son.

Someone had threatened Mateo’s safe place.

Alejandro made one call.

One name.

One order.

“Find who sent this.”

The man on the other side hesitated.

“Sir…”

Alejandro’s voice became ice.

“I want the truth.”

A pause.

“And if someone inside my family is responsible…”

He looked toward Mateo’s room.

“…they will answer to me.”

But before the investigation could begin…

A shocking discovery was made.

The person who sent the message had used a phone number registered under the Ríos family name.

Someone inside the mansion.

Someone close.

Someone who had access to everything.

Meanwhile, Mateo sat beside Valeria.

He held her hand.

Then he did something he had never done before.

He looked at Alejandro.

And said:

“Protect her.”

Two words.

But they carried the weight of a promise.

Alejandro looked at his son.

Then at Valeria.

And he understood.

The battle was no longer only about Sofia’s death.

It was about the future.

About the family he wanted to save.

About the woman who had changed everything.

And about the enemies hiding behind the same walls.

Because the Ríos family had survived enemies outside for decades.

But nobody had prepared them for the most dangerous war of all.

May you like

A war inside their own home.
