CHAPTER 9: THE WORLD AGAINST VALERIA

CHAPTER 9: THE WORLD AGAINST VALERIA
By sunrise, Valeria Gómez had become the most hated woman in Mexico.
Not because she had committed a crime.
Not because she had lied.
Not because she had stolen anything.
But because the world had decided her story before ever hearing her voice.
Television stations replayed the same photographs every hour.
Valeria walking through the Ríos mansion.
Valeria kneeling beside Mateo.
Valeria standing next to Alejandro in the garden.
The headlines grew more vicious with every broadcast.
"THE MAID WHO STOLE A CARTEL BOSS'S HEART?"
"POOR GIRL OR MASTER MANIPULATOR?"
"IS MATEO RÍOS BEING USED?"
Nobody asked what really happened.
Nobody asked how a frightened four-year-old had smiled for the first time in two years.
Kindness was not a headline.
Scandal was.
Inside the mansion, the atmosphere became unbearable.
Some servants refused to meet Valeria's eyes.
Others whispered whenever she passed.
A few even believed the rumors.
Claudia, the senior housekeeper, folded fresh towels without looking up.
"You should leave."
Valeria quietly continued organizing the shelves.
"I've heard that before."
"This time I mean it."
Claudia sighed.
"They'll never accept you."
Valeria smiled sadly.
"I didn't come here to be accepted."
She paused.
"I came here to work."
"And now?"
Valeria looked toward the window where Mateo was playing with wooden blocks.
"Now I stay because a little boy finally feels safe."
Outside the gates, reporters gathered day and night.
Cameras pointed toward every entrance.
Microphones waited like weapons.
One wrong step.
One photograph.
One misunderstood glance.
That was all they needed.
Alejandro watched everything from his office.
Gabriel entered carrying another stack of newspapers.
"It keeps getting worse."
Alejandro barely glanced at the headlines.
"Who leaked the photographs?"
"We're still investigating."
"No."
Alejandro's voice turned cold.
"You've had three days."
Gabriel lowered his eyes.
"We have one lead."
Alejandro looked up.
"A media company received the photos from an anonymous source."
"Trace it."
"We already are."
Alejandro stood.
"I don't want assumptions."
"I want names."
Meanwhile, Valeria tried to pretend none of it mattered.
She cleaned.
She cooked.
She folded Mateo's clothes.
She read him stories.
She smiled whenever he looked at her.
But every night, when she was finally alone...
She cried.
Not because strangers hated her.
Because Daniel might see those stories.
Her little brother had always believed she deserved a better life.
Now the whole country believed she was a liar.
That evening, Daniel called from the hospital.
His voice sounded weaker than usual.
"I saw the news."
Valeria closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?"
"They're saying terrible things."
Daniel laughed softly.
"They don't know my sister."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I don't want you worrying."
"I'm always going to worry."
He coughed.
"But I also know something."
"What?"
"If Mateo smiles because of you..."
He paused to catch his breath.
"Then you're exactly where you're supposed to be."
When the call ended, Valeria sat alone in the hospital chapel's livestream on her phone for several minutes.
She whispered only one sentence.
"Please don't let Daniel suffer because of me."
She never asked for herself.
Only for him.
The next morning, the attacks became personal.
Someone painted words across the outer wall near the servants' entrance.
GO BACK WHERE YOU BELONG.
The servants found it before sunrise.
Doña Socorro immediately ordered it cleaned.
But Mateo saw it first.
He looked at the letters.
Then at Valeria.
"What mean?"
Valeria knelt beside him.
"It means..."
She searched for the right words.
"It means some people speak before they understand."
Mateo frowned.
"They bad?"
She hesitated.
"They're hurt."
He thought quietly.
"Like me?"
Valeria's heart nearly broke.
She gently touched his cheek.
"Maybe."
From the balcony above, Alejandro had heard everything.
He walked downstairs without saying a word.
He stopped in front of the wall.
The paint was still wet.
His jaw tightened.
He turned toward Gabriel.
"I want every camera within five blocks."
"Yes, sir."
"And whoever did this..."
Gabriel waited.
Alejandro's voice became calm.
"The police can question them."
Gabriel looked surprised.
"No retaliation?"
Alejandro looked at Mateo, who was holding Valeria's hand.
"My son has seen enough violence."
The decision spread quickly through the organization.
Some of Alejandro's oldest associates were shocked.
"The boss called the police?"
"He never would have done that before."
"He's changing."
No.
He had already changed.
The only question was whether the people around him could accept it.
That afternoon, Ricardo Ríos arrived unexpectedly.
He entered Alejandro's office without knocking.
"You've become soft."
Alejandro didn't look up from the file he was reading.
"Good afternoon to you too."
Ricardo closed the door.
"You're risking everything."
"For what?"
"A maid."
Alejandro finally raised his eyes.
"No."
He spoke quietly.
"For my son."
Ricardo scoffed.
"Your son needs discipline."
"My son needed someone who loved him."
The room fell silent.
Ricardo's expression hardened.
"Don't forget who built this family."
Alejandro stood.
"I remember."
He stepped closer.
"Do you remember who destroyed it?"
Ricardo's face remained unreadable.
But for the first time...
A flicker of uncertainty crossed his eyes.
Late that evening, Mateo refused dinner.
He simply stared at the empty chair beside him.
Valeria noticed.
"What's wrong?"
He whispered one word.
"Scared."
She sat beside him.
"Of what?"
"They take you."
Alejandro stopped walking.
The room became still.
Valeria smiled gently.
"I'm here."
Mateo shook his head.
"They took Mommy."
The sentence struck every person in the room.
Alejandro slowly knelt beside his son.
"No one is taking Valeria."
Mateo looked at him.
"You promise?"
Alejandro did not answer immediately.
Because promises had once failed his family.
Instead, he held out his hand.
"I'll spend every day proving it."
Mateo looked at his father's hand.
Then placed his tiny hand inside it.
That night, Alejandro made a public statement for the first time since Sofia's death.
Every major news network carried it live.
He stood alone before dozens of cameras.
No lawyers.
No public relations team.
No prepared speech.
Only the truth.
"My son has suffered more than any child should."
He paused.
"For two years, the world called him violent."
Another pause.
"They were wrong."
The reporters remained silent.
"Valeria Gómez did not manipulate my son."
His voice became firmer.
"She listened when the rest of us failed."
Questions exploded from every direction.
"Are you in a relationship with her?"
"Will she remain in the mansion?"
"Is she influencing your business decisions?"
Alejandro answered only once.
"She earned my respect."
Then he walked away.
The statement divided the country.
Some people continued attacking Valeria.
Others began asking different questions.
If Alejandro Ríos—who trusted almost no one—was defending her so fiercely...
What had they misunderstood?
That same night, Gabriel entered Alejandro's office carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"We identified the source of the leaked photographs."
Alejandro looked up.
"Who?"
Gabriel placed another photograph on the desk.
It showed a familiar face leaving the mansion three nights before the scandal began.
Claudia.
The senior housekeeper.
But she wasn't alone.
Standing beside her...
Was a woman Alejandro recognized immediately.
A woman who had disappeared two years earlier.
Sofia's former personal assistant.
The woman everyone believed had left the country after Sofia's funeral.
Gabriel spoke quietly.
"Sir..."
He slid a second file across the desk.
"We found her."
Alejandro opened it.
Inside was a recent bank transfer.
The sender's name made the blood drain from his face.
Ricardo Ríos.
The lies were no longer rumors.
The conspiracy had a face.
May you like
And the war inside the Ríos family had finally entered the open.
