Chapter 11

The Final Trap

The storm arrived before dawn.

Rain lashed against the apartment windows while thunder rolled over the city, shaking the glass just enough to wake Gabriel.

He opened his eyes instantly.

Years of dangerous work had trained him to recognize the difference between ordinary sounds and the feeling that something was wrong.

The apartment was quiet.

Too quiet.

He checked the clock.

5:42 a.m.

Beside him on the couch, his phone vibrated.

NOAH

Gabriel answered immediately.

"Report."

"We lost visual contact with Team Four."

His expression hardened.

"Where?"

"Three blocks from Olivia's apartment."

"Communications?"

"No response."

Gabriel was already on his feet.

"I'm coming."

By seven o'clock, the rain had eased into a cold drizzle.

Lucy sat at the kitchen table drawing pictures while Olivia packed her school lunch.

Gabriel tried to smile.

"You ready for school?"

Lucy nodded enthusiastically.

"We have science today!"

She held up a drawing.

Three stick figures stood beneath a sky full of stars.

One was tall.

One wore a dress.

One had curly hair.

For the first time...

All three faces had smiles.

Gabriel looked at the picture longer than he intended.

"I like it."

Lucy grinned.

"It's our family."

The word settled warmly in his chest.

Family.

It still felt like a gift he hadn't fully earned.

Outside the apartment building, Noah waited beside a black SUV.

"The missing team?"

Gabriel asked.

Noah handed him a tablet.

"They've been found."

"Alive?"

"Barely."

The screen showed an ambulance leaving a warehouse district.

"They were drugged."

"No signs of interrogation."

"No."

Gabriel frowned.

"They weren't attacked."

"They were delayed."

Silence.

Both men reached the same conclusion.

Marcus wasn't trying to eliminate security.

He was creating gaps.

At school, Lucy laughed with her classmates as Mrs. Harper demonstrated a simple science experiment.

No one noticed the electrician replacing a security camera in the hallway.

No one questioned the delivery driver unloading boxes near the gymnasium.

Everything appeared routine.

Exactly as Marcus preferred.

Across the street, Viktor lowered a pair of binoculars.

"The building is mapped."

Marcus stood beside him inside a parked maintenance van.

"And the exits?"

"Four."

"The security teams?"

"They've adapted."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Good."

He never enjoyed defeating careless opponents.

That afternoon, Gabriel attended an emergency meeting at headquarters.

Government officials wanted an update on Marcus's organization.

Maps covered the conference table.

Evidence folders stacked shoulder-high.

One minister looked at Gabriel.

"We're close."

Gabriel didn't answer.

He didn't believe in close.

He believed in finished.

His phone buzzed beneath the table.

A message from Olivia.

Lucy wants to know if you're still coming tonight. Movie night.

Without thinking, Gabriel smiled.

He typed back.

I wouldn't miss it.

Across the table, Noah noticed the smile.

For a brief second, he allowed himself to believe they might actually have a future beyond this war.

At exactly 3:27 p.m., Olivia left the hospital where she worked.

She declined a colleague's offer of coffee.

"I promised my daughter we'd bake cookies."

She climbed into her car.

Two blocks later, traffic came to an unexpected stop.

Construction.

Workers waved vehicles into a detour.

Olivia sighed and turned down a quieter side street.

She never saw the black SUV pull in behind her.

At 3:34 p.m., Gabriel's secure phone rang.

Noah answered first.

His face immediately changed.

"What happened?"

Noah lowered the phone slowly.

"Olivia's tracker just went offline."

Gabriel stood so quickly his chair crashed backward.

"Call every team."

"They already are."

"Traffic cameras."

"Checking."

"Her phone?"

"No signal."

Gabriel's heartbeat thundered in his ears.

Marcus.

Three minutes earlier...

Olivia's car had rounded a narrow corner.

A delivery truck suddenly blocked the road ahead.

She reached for the brake.

Before she could reverse—

A dark van stopped behind her.

Doors opened.

Masked figures surrounded the vehicle.

One shattered the driver's side window.

Olivia fought back fiercely.

She kicked.

Scratched.

Reached for the emergency alarm.

A gloved hand pulled the keys away.

Another covered her mouth with a cloth.

Her vision blurred.

The last thing she saw before darkness claimed her...

...was the small paper shopping bag on the passenger seat.

Cookie ingredients.

She had promised Lucy.

At 4:02 p.m., Lucy waited outside school with Mrs. Harper.

Most of the children had already gone home.

She checked the little watch Gabriel had given her.

"Daddy's late."

Mrs. Harper smiled reassuringly.

"I'm sure he's on his way."

Lucy nodded.

"He always keeps his promises."

Gabriel's SUV skidded to a stop outside the school.

Lucy ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

He knelt and hugged her tightly.

A little too tightly.

She immediately noticed.

"What's wrong?"

Gabriel forced a smile.

"Your mommy got called back to work."

Lucy accepted the explanation without question.

"Can we still have movie night?"

He looked into her hopeful eyes.

"Yes."

Even if every plan in the city had to change.

An hour later, inside an abandoned riverside warehouse, Olivia slowly regained consciousness.

Her wrists were tied to a metal chair.

A single light bulb swung gently overhead.

Footsteps echoed.

Marcus Varga emerged from the shadows.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

Measured smile.

"I'm sorry about the accommodations."

Olivia stared at him.

"Who are you?"

"The wrong question."

He pulled up a chair opposite her.

"The right question is..."

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Gabriel laughing with Lucy.

"...how much is Gabriel Knight willing to sacrifice for the people he loves?"

Olivia's blood ran cold.

"You won't touch my daughter."

Marcus smiled.

"That depends entirely on her father."

That night, Gabriel stood alone in the operations room as dozens of screens displayed live feeds from across the city.

Noah approached quietly.

"No ransom."

"No demands."

"Nothing."

Gabriel looked at Olivia's empty location marker on the map.

"He wants me desperate."

Noah nodded.

"And when the call comes?"

Gabriel's voice became perfectly still.

"I'll answer."

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

The room fell silent.

Gabriel pressed the speaker button.

Marcus's calm voice filled the room.

"Good evening, Gabriel."

"What do you want?"

"A conversation."

"If you've hurt Olivia—"

Marcus interrupted him.

"She's alive."

"For now."

A long pause followed.

Then Marcus delivered the sentence Gabriel had feared most.

"You've spent years taking apart my empire."

Another pause.

"So now..."

"...I'm going to dismantle your family."

The line went dead.

Noah looked toward Gabriel.

For several seconds, Gabriel didn't move.

Then he picked up his jacket.

"Where are you going?" Noah asked.

Gabriel's eyes never left the silent phone.

"To end this."

Outside, thunder split the night sky.

Across town, Lucy had fallen asleep on the couch, still waiting for movie night to begin.

The bowl of popcorn sat untouched on the coffee table.

She didn't know her mother had been taken.

She didn't know a war had already begun.

She only knew one thing with absolute certainty.

May you like

Her father had promised he would always come home.
