Chapter 14

A Different Sunrise

The lighthouse stood alone where the cliffs met the sea.

For decades, ships had relied on its beacon to find their way through storms.

Now its light had become a prison.

Olivia stood by the narrow window of the small room where Marcus had locked her away.

The horizon slowly brightened.

Another sunrise.

Another day without Lucy.

She closed her eyes.

"Please let her be safe."

She wasn't praying for herself anymore.

Only for her daughter.

Miles away, the operations room was silent.

The walls were covered with maps, satellite images, intercepted communications, and photographs of Marcus's known associates.

Gabriel stood in front of the largest screen.

His face was pale.

His movements were slower after the cardiac arrest.

But his eyes had never been clearer.

Noah entered carrying a flash drive.

"We finally caught a break."

Gabriel looked up.

"What did we get?"

"A fishing trawler."

Gabriel frowned.

"The one that supplied Marcus's coastal safe houses."

Noah plugged the drive into the main computer.

A grainy surveillance video appeared.

At 2:17 a.m., a truck had unloaded food, fuel, and medical supplies onto the boat.

The vessel sailed north before dawn.

Gabriel paused the footage.

"Freeze."

Noah enlarged the frame.

For only a fraction of a second, reflected in the truck's side mirror, stood the outline of a lighthouse.

Gabriel's pulse quickened.

"Can you identify it?"

Already typing, Noah cross-referenced every lighthouse within two hundred miles.

One by one, they disappeared from the screen.

Modern.

Too small.

Inactive.

Until only one remained.

Blackstone Point Lighthouse.

Abandoned twenty years earlier.

Accessible only by a narrow coastal road.

Exactly the kind of place Marcus would choose.

Marcus stood at the top of the lighthouse, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.

Viktor approached quietly.

"Our perimeter is ready."

Marcus nodded.

"Snipers?"

"In position."

"Explosives?"

"Armed."

"And the hostage?"

"Still refusing to cooperate."

Marcus smiled.

"I wasn't expecting cooperation."

He looked toward the endless sea.

"I was expecting Gabriel."

Meanwhile...

Lucy was spending the day with Mrs. Harper.

They sat beneath the giant maple tree in the school garden.

The teacher noticed Lucy staring at the clouds.

"Thinking about your parents?"

Lucy nodded.

"I had a dream."

"What happened?"

"Daddy and Mommy were standing on a beach."

She looked up.

"There was a big light behind them."

Mrs. Harper smiled gently.

"A lighthouse?"

Lucy blinked.

"Maybe."

She picked up a fallen leaf.

"I think they were trying to come home."

By late afternoon, dozens of unmarked vehicles gathered along the coastal highway.

The ocean stretched endlessly beside them.

Gabriel stepped out of the lead SUV.

The salty air stung his lungs.

His heart monitor remained hidden beneath his jacket.

Dr. Ross approached.

"You shouldn't be here."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"You've said that a lot lately."

"I keep hoping you'll listen."

He looked toward the distant lighthouse barely visible through the mist.

"I promised my daughter."

Dr. Ross knew there would be no changing his mind.

She simply handed him another dose of medication.

"For as long as it lasts."

The tactical team moved silently through the cliffs.

Night was beginning to fall.

The beam of the old lighthouse swept slowly across the sea.

One rotation.

Another.

Noah whispered into his radio.

"All units in position."

Gabriel raised one hand.

"Wait."

Something felt wrong.

Too quiet.

Marcus wanted him here.

Every instinct told him this wasn't a rescue.

It was a stage.

Inside the lighthouse...

Olivia heard footsteps climbing the stairs.

Marcus unlocked the door.

"Your family is almost here."

She glared at him.

"You'll lose."

Marcus chuckled.

"Perhaps."

He stepped aside.

"But tell me..."

"If Gabriel saves you..."

"...who saves him?"

Olivia's expression changed.

"What have you done?"

Marcus didn't answer.

He simply walked away.

Outside—

A spotlight suddenly illuminated the cliffside.

The darkness disappeared.

Hidden speakers crackled to life.

Marcus's calm voice echoed across the crashing waves.

"Welcome, Gabriel."

Snipers immediately aimed toward the lighthouse.

Tactical teams took cover behind rocks.

Gabriel stepped into the open.

"I'm here."

"I know."

Marcus's laughter echoed through the speakers.

"I've been waiting."

The lighthouse door slowly opened.

Olivia appeared on the balcony above.

Her hands were still tied.

She searched desperately through the darkness.

Then she saw him.

"Gabriel!"

He looked up.

Their eyes met for the first time since her kidnapping.

Relief lasted only a second.

Marcus stepped beside her.

One hand rested lightly on the detonator in his pocket.

The other pointed toward the sea.

Large floodlights suddenly illuminated the cliffs below.

Dozens of explosives were wired into the rocky foundation beneath the lighthouse.

Noah's face went pale.

"He's mined the entire cliff."

Marcus smiled.

"You can storm the building."

"You can shoot me."

"You can even save Olivia."

He looked directly at Gabriel.

"But if this detonator leaves my hand..."

"...the lighthouse falls into the ocean."

Silence.

Only the waves could be heard.

Marcus's voice softened.

"You've always believed every problem has a solution."

"Let's test that belief."

Gabriel took one slow step forward.

"What do you want?"

Marcus looked almost disappointed by the question.

"You still don't understand."

He reached into his coat.

Instead of a weapon...

...he removed Lucy's blue paper star.

Crushed.

Wrinkled.

Nearly torn apart.

"I don't want money."

"I don't want power."

He let the paper drift into the wind.

"I want you to lose what gave you hope."

The tiny blue star floated downward before disappearing into the darkness below.

Gabriel watched it vanish.

For a moment, grief flashed across his face.

Then something unexpected happened.

He smiled.

Marcus frowned.

"You find this amusing?"

Gabriel slowly shook his head.

"No."

"You've made a mistake."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"I destroyed her gift."

Gabriel looked toward the sea.

"No."

"You destroyed paper."

He placed one hand over his heart.

"The hope she gave me..."

"...is here."

For the first time in years...

Marcus stopped smiling.

Far away, in the city, Lucy stood beside her bedroom window.

The sky above the ocean glowed with the last colors of sunset.

She pressed one hand against the glass.

"I think Daddy needs me."

She closed her eyes.

"I believe in you."

Back at the lighthouse, Gabriel looked directly at Marcus.

"You once told me every person has a weakness."

Marcus remained silent.

"You were right."

Gabriel's voice was calm.

"My weakness isn't love."

He took another step forward.

"It's the fear of losing it."

He glanced toward Olivia.

"And I'm done being afraid."

Marcus's thumb slowly tightened around the detonator.

The final move had arrived.

May you like

Only one sunrise remained.
