Chapter 13

Chapter 13
The Man Who Chose Love
"Clear!"
The defibrillator discharged with a violent jolt.
Gabriel's body arched off the concrete floor before falling back heavily.
Every person inside the abandoned warehouse held their breath.
The heart monitor showed only a thin, unwavering line.
No rhythm.
No heartbeat.
Dr. Amelia Ross pressed two fingers against his neck.
Nothing.
She looked at Noah.
"Start compressions."
Noah dropped to his knees without hesitation.
One.
Two.
Three.
He counted aloud as his hands pressed firmly against Gabriel's chest.
Around them, tactical officers continued searching the warehouse, but their voices sounded impossibly distant.
For Noah, there was only one mission left.
Keep his friend alive.
Across town, Lucy sat beside the apartment window watching the evening sky.
The first stars had begun to appear.
She rested her chin on the windowsill.
"Mommy's still working."
The words sounded more like a question than a statement.
Mrs. Harper, who had agreed to stay with Lucy until Olivia returned, smiled gently.
"I'm sure she's thinking about you."
Lucy nodded.
"And Daddy?"
Mrs. Harper hesitated.
"I'm sure he is too."
Lucy looked toward the brightest star.
"I think something's wrong."
Back at the shipyard—
"Clear!"
A second shock.
Gabriel's body jerked again.
Still nothing.
Dr. Ross checked the monitor.
"Continue compressions."
Noah refused to stop.
His arms burned.
Sweat rolled down his face.
"You don't get to quit," he muttered between breaths.
"You promised that little girl."
Another thirty seconds passed.
Dr. Ross reached for the defibrillator one final time.
"Three hundred joules."
She looked around the silent warehouse.
"Clear!"
The shock echoed through the cavernous building.
The monitor flickered.
Flatline.
Then—
A tiny spike.
Another.
A slow, uneven rhythm returned.
Beep.
...
Beep.
...
Beep.
Dr. Ross released a long breath.
"We've got him."
Noah closed his eyes for just a moment.
"Don't scare me like that again."
Gabriel woke inside the ambulance.
Everything hurt.
His chest.
His lungs.
His shoulder.
His heart.
Most of all, his heart.
Dr. Ross noticed his eyes opening.
"Don't move."
He ignored her.
"Olivia."
"We haven't found her."
"Lucy."
"She's safe."
He relaxed slightly.
Then he looked at the ceiling.
"I died."
Dr. Ross didn't answer immediately.
"For forty-three seconds."
Gabriel smiled weakly.
"I always wondered what death felt like."
"And?"
He closed his eyes again.
"It felt like I was leaving before I finished saying goodbye."
Late that night—
Lucy had fallen asleep on the living room couch.
Her notebook rested open on her lap.
Mrs. Harper gently picked it up to keep it from falling.
A folded page slipped onto the floor.
She hesitated.
Then noticed the words written across the top.
For Daddy.
She wasn't trying to invade the child's privacy.
The paper had already unfolded.
Her eyes caught only the first few lines.
Dear Daddy,
Thank you for finding me.
Even if you came late...
...you still came.
Mrs. Harper quietly folded the letter again.
A tear escaped before she realized it.
At the hospital, Gabriel refused to remain in bed.
Dr. Ross blocked the doorway.
"You suffered a cardiac arrest."
"I know."
"You need surgery."
"I know."
"You cannot leave."
Gabriel looked at her steadily.
"If Olivia dies while I'm lying in this bed..."
"...I'll never forgive myself."
Dr. Ross's shoulders slumped.
She had spent years treating hearts.
She had learned that medicine could repair muscle.
It could not change love.
She stepped aside.
"Then at least take this."
She handed him a small bottle of medication.
"It might buy you a little more time."
Gabriel accepted it.
"Thank you."
"No."
She smiled sadly.
"Come back alive."
Meanwhile, Marcus Varga stood inside a lighthouse overlooking the ocean.
Olivia remained locked inside an upstairs room.
Viktor approached quietly.
"Gabriel survived."
Marcus wasn't surprised.
"I expected he would."
"We nearly killed him."
Marcus turned toward the dark sea.
"No."
"We reminded him that every heartbeat now belongs to us."
He removed Lucy's blue paper star from his pocket.
"So fragile."
With one careless motion, he crushed it in his hand.
The tiny folds slowly unfolded.
Hope becoming paper again.
Noah entered the hospital parking garage just as Gabriel reached his SUV.
"You should be resting."
Gabriel climbed into the driver's seat.
"I rested."
"For twenty minutes."
"I was unconscious."
"Exactly."
Noah sighed.
"You really are impossible."
Gabriel started the engine.
"No."
"I'm a father."
As they drove through the sleeping city, Noah glanced sideways.
"You know..."
"...six months ago you'd have sent a team."
"I know."
"You wouldn't have gone yourself."
"I know."
"So what changed?"
Gabriel looked through the windshield.
"For years I believed love made people weak."
He smiled faintly.
"Lucy proved the opposite."
"How?"
"Because now..."
"...I finally know what I'm fighting for."
Before dawn, Gabriel quietly returned to Olivia's apartment.
He didn't want to wake Lucy.
He simply wanted to see her.
The apartment was silent.
He gently opened the bedroom door.
Moonlight spilled across the room.
Lucy slept peacefully, one small hand resting beneath her cheek.
Beside her pillow lay the wooden music box.
Gabriel noticed something tucked beneath it.
A folded letter.
His name written carefully in bright blue crayon.
Daddy
He hesitated.
Then slowly opened it.
Inside, in uneven handwriting, were words that shattered the last walls around his heart.
Dear Daddy,
I know grown-ups make mistakes.
Mommy says the brave people are the ones who come back and fix them.
I don't need a perfect daddy.
I just need you.
Love,
Lucy
Gabriel read the letter again.
Then again.
His vision blurred.
A single tear landed on the page.
He carefully folded it and placed it over his heart.
For years, he had measured success in victories, money, influence, and survival.
A six-year-old girl had just taught him a different measure.
Being loved wasn't something he had earned.
It was something he had been given.
And that gift was worth more than his own life.
He leaned down and gently kissed Lucy's forehead.
"I won't fail you again," he whispered.
Lucy stirred slightly in her sleep.
Without opening her eyes, she murmured one sleepy word.
"Daddy..."
Gabriel smiled through his tears.
"No matter what it costs..."
"...I'm coming home with your mommy."
Outside, the first light of morning touched the horizon.
Far away, Olivia looked through the tiny window of her prison cell toward the same sunrise.
She closed her eyes and whispered into the silence.
"Come find me."
Neither of them knew that Marcus had already prepared his final move.
The game was almost over.
May you like
Only one choice remained.
