Chapter 8

Chapter 8
The Chase
The city woke beneath a blanket of low gray clouds.
Rush-hour traffic clogged every major avenue. School buses rumbled through neighborhoods. Coffee shops filled with people too busy to notice the black SUV parked quietly across from Brookside Elementary.
Inside, Gabriel watched the front gate through the windshield.
Noah glanced at the clock.
"Our teams are in position."
Gabriel nodded.
"Any movement?"
"Nothing unusual."
That was exactly what worried him.
Marcus Varga was not a man who acted impulsively.
When everything looked normal, it usually meant the real danger had already begun.
Lucy skipped through the school gates carrying her backpack and the little wooden music box tucked safely inside.
Mrs. Harper smiled as she greeted the students.
"Good morning, Lucy."
"Good morning!"
Lucy reached into her bag.
"I brought something to show everyone."
"The music box?"
Lucy nodded proudly.
"It plays my favorite song."
Mrs. Harper smiled.
"I can't wait to hear it."
From across the street, Gabriel watched his daughter disappear into the building.
Only then did he allow himself to breathe.
Miles away, inside an abandoned warehouse, Marcus studied a digital map of the city.
Red dots marked surveillance teams.
Blue dots marked escape routes.
One flashing icon represented Lucy's school.
Viktor entered carrying a folder.
"Our men have confirmed the routine."
Marcus looked up.
"And?"
"The child leaves school at three-fifteen."
"Walks two blocks before meeting her mother."
Marcus tapped the map.
"No security visible."
"They're there."
"They're simply well hidden."
Marcus smiled.
"So we'll make them reveal themselves."
At three-fifteen sharp, the final school bell rang.
Children poured out onto the sidewalk in waves of laughter.
Lucy waved goodbye to Mrs. Harper before stepping through the front gate.
Olivia wasn't there yet.
She checked the small pink watch on her wrist.
Mom was usually early.
She decided to wait beside the flower bed near the entrance.
Across the street, Noah frowned.
"Olivia's thirty seconds late."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"Call Team Three."
A voice crackled through the radio.
"Negative. Olivia's bus is stuck behind an accident two blocks away."
Gabriel's instincts sharpened immediately.
"Move closer."
At the far end of the block, a white delivery van rolled slowly toward the curb.
It looked ordinary.
No company logo.
No unusual markings.
Just another vehicle among dozens.
The side door slid open.
Two men stepped out.
One carried a clipboard.
The other smiled politely.
"Excuse me," the first man called to Lucy.
She looked up.
"Yes?"
"We're looking for Brookside Library."
Lucy pointed down the street.
"I think it's that way."
"Thank you."
The second man took one casual step closer.
Then another.
Inside the SUV, Noah's voice became urgent.
"They're moving."
Gabriel's hand tightened around the door handle.
"Wait."
The second man reached into his jacket.
Not for a weapon.
For a small stuffed bear.
"Is your name Lucy?"
She hesitated.
"...Yes."
"We have a birthday present for you."
Her smile faded.
"My mommy says I shouldn't take presents from strangers."
The man's smile never changed.
"Your daddy sent it."
Lucy froze.
"My... daddy?"
Gabriel's heart slammed against his ribs.
He threw open the SUV door before Noah could stop him.
"Boss!"
Too late.
Gabriel was already running.
The two men spotted him instantly.
"Abort!"
One grabbed Lucy.
She screamed.
The other shoved the stuffed bear into the van and slammed the side door.
Everything happened in seconds.
"No!"
Gabriel's voice echoed across the street.
The man holding Lucy lifted her off the ground.
She kicked wildly.
"I want my mommy!"
A hidden security operative tackled the kidnapper from behind.
Lucy slipped free.
Gabriel reached her just as the second attacker drew a pistol.
A single shot rang out.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
Gabriel pulled Lucy behind a parked car as another operative returned fire.
The white van roared away, tires shrieking against the pavement.
"Lucy!"
Gabriel looked down.
The little girl was shaking.
Tears streamed down her face.
"They said..."
She struggled to breathe.
"They said Daddy sent them..."
Gabriel's chest tightened.
He gently placed both hands on her shoulders.
"They lied."
His voice was calm despite the chaos around them.
"They lied to you."
Lucy looked into his eyes.
"You came."
"I did."
"You ran."
"I'll always run if you're in danger."
The words escaped before he realized what he had said.
Lucy stared at him.
For a brief moment, something passed between them.
Something neither of them could explain.
Police sirens echoed through the streets.
Parents rushed toward frightened children.
Mrs. Harper hurried outside, horrified by the scene.
Olivia's taxi screeched to a stop at the curb.
She jumped out before it had fully halted.
"Lucy!"
Lucy burst into tears and ran into her mother's arms.
"I'm sorry..."
Olivia held her tightly.
"It's okay."
"I was scared."
"I know."
Olivia looked over Lucy's shoulder toward Gabriel.
"You saved her."
Gabriel simply nodded.
Anyone else might have accepted her gratitude.
He couldn't.
Because saving Lucy wasn't an act of heroism.
It was the bare minimum a father should do.
Across town, Marcus watched the failed operation through a live drone feed.
He wasn't angry.
He was fascinated.
Viktor looked uneasy.
"We lost two men."
Marcus ignored the comment.
Instead, he replayed the footage.
Again.
And again.
Gabriel hadn't hesitated.
He hadn't protected himself.
He hadn't waited for backup.
He had sprinted directly toward the child.
Marcus paused the video on a single frame.
Gabriel shielding Lucy with his own body.
"There it is," Marcus whispered.
Viktor frowned.
"What?"
"The answer."
He enlarged the image.
The fear on Gabriel's face was unmistakable.
Not fear of dying.
Fear of losing her.
Marcus smiled slowly.
"We finally know where his heart lives."
That night, Lucy sat quietly on her bed, clutching the little blue paper star she had secretly borrowed from Gabriel's coat pocket when he hugged her goodbye after the police interviews.
She didn't know why she had done it.
It simply reminded her that she hadn't been alone.
Olivia knocked gently before entering.
"How are you feeling?"
Lucy looked up.
"I keep hearing those men."
Olivia sat beside her.
"They can't hurt you now."
Lucy nodded slowly.
After a long silence, she asked,
"Mommy..."
"Yes?"
"When Mr. Gabe said he'd always come if I was in danger..."
"...why did it sound like a promise he'd been waiting a long time to make?"
Olivia had no answer.
Across the city, Gabriel stood alone in his office, replaying the security footage.
His phone buzzed with a secure message from Noah.
UNKNOWN DRONE IDENTIFIED. SOURCE ESCAPED.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
The attack had failed.
But it had accomplished something even more dangerous.
May you like
Someone now knew exactly how far he was willing to go for one little girl.
