Chapter 7

The Photograph

The envelope arrived without a return address.

It was slipped beneath the door of Marcus Varga's private office before sunrise.

Inside were eight glossy photographs.

Marcus spread them across the polished oak desk one by one.

The first showed Gabriel standing outside the bookstore.

The second captured him watching Lucy from across the street.

The third showed the little girl handing him a folded paper star.

The fourth—

Marcus stopped.

It was the photograph taken on Lucy's birthday.

The little girl was hugging Gabriel.

Not the polite embrace of a child thanking an acquaintance.

It was natural.

Comfortable.

Trusting.

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

"Interesting."

His intelligence chief, Viktor Soren, folded his arms.

"Our observer believes the man has become emotionally attached to the child."

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he studied Gabriel's face.

For years he had tried to understand the man who had dismantled operation after operation without allowing emotion to cloud his judgment.

Yet the expression in this picture was unlike anything Marcus had seen before.

Not determination.

Not calculation.

Love.

And love, Marcus believed, was the easiest weakness to exploit.

Across town, Gabriel sat through another consultation with Dr. Amelia Ross.

She placed the latest scan beside the previous one.

"The aneurysm has grown."

He already knew from the look on her face.

"You've been ignoring the medication."

"I've been... busy."

"You almost collapsed yesterday."

"It passed."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"No, Gabriel. It didn't pass."

The room fell silent.

"You are gambling with your life."

Gabriel rubbed a hand across his forehead.

"I just need a little more time."

"You keep saying that."

"Because I finally have something worth spending time on."

Dr. Ross softened.

"The little girl?"

Gabriel looked up, surprised.

"I've seen your expression change every time your phone lights up."

She offered a faint smile.

"I don't know who she is."

"But whoever she is..."

"...don't wait until it's too late."

Meanwhile, Lucy skipped home from school, her music box safely tucked inside her backpack.

She couldn't stop humming its melody.

Olivia laughed.

"I think someone likes her birthday present."

"I love it."

Lucy looked thoughtful.

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Do you think Mr. Gabe has a family?"

Olivia hesitated.

"I don't know."

"He looks lonely sometimes."

"He does."

Lucy squeezed her mother's hand.

"Maybe people stop feeling lonely when someone remembers them."

Olivia looked down at her daughter.

"You have a very kind heart."

Lucy smiled.

"I think lonely people need extra kindness."

That afternoon, Noah entered Gabriel's office carrying a tablet.

"We've confirmed it."

Gabriel looked up.

"The gray sedan?"

"No."

"The photographer."

He placed several enlarged images on the desk.

Security cameras from nearby buildings had captured the same man outside the bookstore, the school, and the birthday celebration.

"Professional?"

Noah nodded.

"Very."

"Any identification?"

"None."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"They're not following me anymore."

"They're following Lucy."

The words hung heavily between them.

Gabriel stood immediately.

"Increase the protection."

"It's already doubled."

"Triple it."

"What about Olivia?"

"She can't know."

Noah frowned.

"She deserves to."

"If she knows she's being hunted..."

Gabriel looked toward the window.

"...she'll blame herself."

"And if she doesn't know?"

"I'll make sure nothing reaches her."

Several miles away, Marcus watched a live drone feed of Brookside Elementary.

Children filled the playground.

Teachers laughed.

Parents waved.

Completely ordinary.

Marcus wasn't interested in ordinary.

His attention remained fixed on one small girl sitting beneath a maple tree with a notebook in her lap.

"That's her?"

Viktor nodded.

"Lucy Brooks."

Marcus repeated the name quietly.

"Brooks."

"No connection to Knight on paper."

"No financial links."

"No shared addresses."

"No phone records."

He smiled faintly.

"But people don't look at strangers the way Gabriel looks at this child."

He tapped the photograph of the birthday hug.

"Find the connection."

"Family."

"Old friends."

"Anything."

"And if there isn't one?"

Marcus folded the photograph and slipped it into his pocket.

"There always is."

That evening, rain fell gently outside Olivia's apartment.

Lucy sat at her desk writing another letter.

Dear Daddy,

Today I wondered if lonely people can find their way home.

Mr. Gabe smiles more now.

I think that's nice.

Sometimes I wish you could meet him.

I think you'd like him.

Love, Lucy.

She folded the page and placed it inside the wooden box with all the others.

Across the room, Olivia watched quietly.

Her heart ached every time she saw another letter added to a collection that had never been mailed.

Near midnight, Gabriel's secure phone buzzed.

Noah's voice was unusually tense.

"We have a breach."

Gabriel was already reaching for his coat.

"What happened?"

"Someone accessed public records connected to Olivia Brooks."

"How long ago?"

"Twenty-three minutes."

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

Gabriel's pulse quickened.

"They're moving faster than we expected."

"We've relocated the surveillance teams."

Gabriel headed for the elevator.

"No."

"What?"

"I'm done reacting."

The elevator doors opened.

"This time..."

"...we find them first."

In another part of the city, Marcus stood before the wall of photographs once more.

His eyes settled on the image of Gabriel holding Lucy's tiny birthday gift.

He smiled.

"It doesn't matter who she is."

Viktor looked puzzled.

Marcus tucked the photograph into his jacket.

"Anyone who can make Gabriel Knight lower his guard..."

"...is already standing at the center of the battlefield."

Outside, lightning flashed across the skyline.

Neither man knew it yet.

The next move would no longer be made from the shadows. It would force every secret into the light.
